How do I improve stamina

Hello All,
I just joined this forum. I never went to a gym or exercised in my whole life. I am 27 years old. Recently (about 2 months back) I had gone through a surgery and now I recovered, but I discovered that I am getting tired easily. If I walk (not running or fast walking just strolling) for just a half mile I am starting panting. Before the surgery, I was better. More info about me I am 5'4 in height, male, weighing 170 pounds (overweight), I have a sedentary life style.

I saw that none of the forum categories are related to this so I posted here. Can someone let me know how I can improve my stamina, lose weight and may be build muscle. I will ask weight loss specific questions and weights specific questions in the appropriate categories from now on.

Welcome!

This is somewhat of a personal question, but I beleive it is an important factor.

What kind of surgery did you undergo?

Depending on this, I would start you off with light walks and build up the duration and intensity over a decent amount of time. Since you haven't done any workouts in your whole life, I think it is reasonable to get you started on a somewhat light intensity and see how it goes from there. Additionally, I would go see your doctor before starting any sort of workout regime to make sure it isn't a problem with the surgery you had.

Also, before starting any sort of workout, I would take the time to do some reading on this site on the subject of nutrition. Nutrition is a very important factor. In the nutrition section there are stickies where you can learn a good deal of things to get you started.

If you need some help to get around this forum, let me know!

:D

Thanks Eric for your reply. I underwent an appendicitis surgery. But now I am totally fine. Doctor told I can resume my normal activities, but still as per your advice, I will check with my doctor.
