How do I determine how many calories to have to loose weight?

Does anyone know of a website that would indicate how many calories I need to take a day in order to loose weight?

Thank you!

Keep in mind, online calculators and forumulas are going to vary, the important thing is that it has at least your activity level as part of a factor... I use as a good "guestimate"... But that's how many calories you need in a day to survive, so then all you do is subtract 500 calories, and then that's how much you need to lose weight... Let me know if you need help...

Its all a guess

as Dex said... 500 below what maintains you

eat normal to keep your weight calculate the food totals for the week and thats your base.

Me confused....

Thank you for your help! I checked out that site you recommended and it gave me my daily calorie needs. But, is that number the one I need to decrease by 500 a day to loose a pound a week? I guess I am a bit confused about the resting metabolic rate.
Thoughts? thanks much!

Gisela its a starting point only.

you start there. if you loose keep at it, if not lower your daily total by 500.
if you loose keep at it if not lower by another 500

don't overthink it

There is more to it than just counting calories and its different for everyone. If you are just counting calories, I think that you are setting yourself up for lng term failure.

It would help to find a physician that works with lifestyle management and figure out what its going to take to be successful for life!

Thanks Fit1!
I am currently doing quite a bit of cardio (45m-1.00hr) daily and will start weights 2 x a week. Haven't yet.
I eat pretty healthy but too much of it so keeping track of what I eat makes me realize that my portion control is out of wack. I am using Fitday.com to keep track of my calorie intake.
What else would you suggest about loosing weight in a healthy way?
I currently have 30lbs to loose.
Thanks!

Try to eat at least 4-5 meals per day... so the calories you burn in a day minus 500... take that and divide it by 5, that's kind of a 'guestimate' of how much you should eat each time...

Also, try to have some sort of 'clean' protein with each meal... Chicken, Turkey, Tuna, Cottage Cheese, Yogurt, etc... are a couple of examples....

Thanks

Thanks ! I will ensure that I add protein to all my meals. I am doing fine, loosing 2-3 lbs a week. Since I am working out pretty much daily and watching what I am eating, I think I should be fine. I am just much more careful about the food choice I am making. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
