How can I help my friend lose weight?

I'm skinny and trying to gain weight. He's trying to lose weight so I don't know much about it. He's 5'8, 208 pounds. I'd say he's kinda big-boned, and a lot of it is just muscle. But he wants to slim down, maybe tone a little. I had these questions:

What can I suggest for him to diet on?
Since he's trying to turn his fat into muscle, how should he lift?
What sort of lifting should he focus on?

This is more of an appearance thing than it is a "I want to get fit" type of deal.
 
You cant turn fat into muscle. And its very difficult to cut fat and build muscle at the same time (you can cut fat and strengthen muscle, but cutting fat and gaining muscle is nearly impossible)

I would have him work on a rigorous cardio schedule 3 days / week (running 3-5 miles per session) and get him lifting HEAVY weights (maxing out on all final sets) with compound exercises (Benchpress, Squats, Deadlifts & Rows) at least 2 - 3 days / week.

This would be in addition to a diet that he will be strict to count his calories on, not exceeding 2069 calories per day.
 
Well I think you should let hem see that topic, I hope he go to gym and start doing something as you say. get hem into it.
 
Yea he should probably also go on a higher portein diet while he's lifting his weights. I'm not talking about an Atkin's diet. For a week or two he should try to increase his protein intake to be about 40-50% of his caloric intake. That will help him build muscle and will also help him lose weight.
 
In a nutshell (and in order of bang for your buck in terms of weight loss)

Get nutrition in line by creating a calorie deficit.
Get adequate, and good quality sleep.
Get your butt moving in day to day life.

then consider the finer points of what workout to do.
