A little info on the hoodia fad...
first off, hoodia gordonii is an endangered species. it cannot be harvested without a special permit and certificate. and then it cannot be imported into the US without that certificate and a license from the USDA that allows you to import it. Because of this, it is recommended that you only buy hoodia from sources who have it tested and assayed to actually be hoodia. The permits/licenses etc are what cause it to be so pricey, at least when it is actually hoodia.
ok, even beyond that little tidbit, what is most likely the cause of any "hoodia success" has more to do with a double placebo effect. first off, people buy it thinking it will work, and the mind believes such, and it seems to work. second off, who the hell wants to admit they bought a product, paid out the ass for it, and then it didnt work?
There has yet to be a single REAL study (peer reviewed, double blind, the be all-end all standard in science) published proving either the effectiveness OR the SAFETY of hoodia. The only study done so far was on 7 people (extremely low population), who were all very obese (not a proper population sample), and who lost an average of 10 pounds in 1 month (3.3% bodyweight reduction), while also doing cardio and eating better! We all know that cardio and decent eating will drop 10 pounds a month on its own if you are very obese.
The only real study that has been done so far merely showed that the P57 broke down very quick in the liver, and suggested that it would be very difficult to ingest enough hoodia to have any useful effect. Meaning that the 30 dollar or more bottle you bought would only last you a few days tops at the dosages you would prolly need in order to get any effect, and thats assuming youve actually got a product with real hoodia in it.
concerning the stories about the bushmen in africa, remember that because a certain group of people can eat something on the opposite side of the globe does not mean that it will be safe and healthy for you.
take the info as you like, for those who feel hoodia is working for them, if that placebo effect is what you need then by all means continue. but you might want to ponder the thought of having to take that stuff for the rest of your life... i mean, if you need it that bad to eat right, what are you going to do when you arent taking it anymore?
