hip bones

Before I started working out I could really feel my hip bones and see the tips of them when standing. When laying flat they really stuck up. Now that I have been lifting weights, I can barely see them or feel them when laying down. If I am losing fat, how can this be. Doesn't make sense to me. I see lots female competitors etc, with low body fat, but you can still see the hip bones some. Am I just gaining muscle in this area, and what would this muscle be called. I don't understand. I like having that thin look in that area. I don't mean I looked anorexic or anything like that, I just seemed more lean or something.
