~~Hana's Diary~~

1200 kcal a day is already very low (unless you´re over 60 or very short) and - at least in the UK - isn´t recommended for longer than a two-week diet. Most docs tell you to start off at around 1500 (unless you´re male or very obese, in which case it´s higher).

Not much protein in there Hana. "Proteins are the building blocks of life. Every cell in the human body contains protein. The basic structure of protein is a chain of amino acids. You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones"

That's the way. Well done on the loss Hana. 26.5 BMI :D
Getting used to eating what feels right is definitely a good way to do it! Congrats on the loss!

If you're not sure about the calories, 1200 a day while on a diet is usually a great starting point. And I agree with Cate about the protein suggestion. Do you like flavoured protein powders? A protein smoothie for breakfast was always an easy (and really lazy ) way I used to get my daily 55 grams of protein. :D

Okay yeah I think I always have struggled with protein and especially because other than chicken I don't really like most meats. I've never really looked at protein powders before what are they like?

I'm gonna try hard today to improve all of those things and my calcium too and try to eat more calories too of I can :) Thank you everyone for the advice and support it's really awesome and helpful!

Today went pretty good but I felt like I ate a lot of food too :( Tomorrow is going to be my last day before I go away so I don't know if I'm going to keep updating every day or what my food is going to look like :)

Lunch:
Wholemeal bread roll (130) with sliced chicken (42) and lettuce (2)
Tomato (16)

Lunch 2:
Seeded tortilla wrap (186) with tuna (127), peas (24) and hot chilli sauce (4)

Dinner:

Red onions (11), yellow pepper (5)
White bread roll (128)

Snacks:
Frozen apricot frube yoghurt (42)
Strawberries (24)
Sour sweets (59)

How about you just post what you ate without adding the calories? That´s still accountability (something I hate but should have more of).

Just update when you can Hana & enjoy yourself. Maybe keep a brief note in your phone that you can copy & paste later. That way you will still feel that you are being accountable. The note may say whoops sometime, but that is life. Enjoy, xoC

Hey Hana! I see we are about the same height and weight, getting down to 80kg first, woohoo! Am also jealous of all the time with your dad. I am 28 years old and my parents have been living overseas for 4 years :(

I just started my diary too, and I plan to make a lifestyle change this time around - not just a short stint :)

Yeah I think I'm going to keep track of what I can and try to ignore the calories as much as I can rather than trying to guess and getting it all wrong :)

Oh that's so cool that we are a similar height and weight! :) I'm definitely going to watch your post, we can do it together :)

Where are your living now? My parents keep joking all the time about moving to another country so maybe they will too when my sister is finished with school.

My family has always lived in South Africa. Until my brother emigrated to Australia, and my parents moved to Germany for work :( They'll be back though :)

IF they decide to go, try to not just think "no big deal". It IS a big deal, and feels very sudden, especially if they have been guiding you in an active way. I felt very alone for a while, even though I had my fiancée and his family. Spend all the time you can with them now and appreciate it :)

That's really sad it must be so hard with such a sudden change :( I'm glad your parents didn't make a permanent move though :)

I'm not sure how I would deal with it myself really, I like to think I am but I'm really not a very independent person haha. I'd have to hope someone else would pick me up and look after me to stop me wandering aimlessly :(

I messed up a bit today and I haven't eaten anywhere near a healthy variety of foods. I sort of panicked about eating a load of chocolate and sweets and that I was going to have food later and I wasn't sure what it was going to be, so I just ate a bunch of stuff near me so that I wouldn't have to eat later or worry about it any more. I'm going to do a lot better this next week, I'm not really sure what happened :(

Breakfast:
  • Strawberries (24)
Lunch:
  • Mozzarella and vegetable quiche (182)
  • Brown bread roll (138) with butter (90) and sliced chicken (85) and lettuce (7)
  • Brown bread roll (138) with butter (90)
  • Tomato (16)
Snacks:
  • Sour sweets (165)
  • Milk chocolate (158)

Whenever you mess up still have a meal, but make sure it's extra healthy. Tomorrow is another day xo

This week is probably going to be a lot harder than I thought so I'm going to try my best not to feel bad about what I eat. I haven't had a lot of control over when or what I've eaten so far and arguing about it just isn't worth upsetting everyone. Still.. I'm just gonna enjoy my holiday and time with my family :)

Saturday:

Breakfast:

Grilled chicken (110
Mushrooms (15)
A piece of bacon (60)
Oil (20)

Lunch:

McDonald's chicken nuggets happy meal (403)
Small Fanta (105)

Dinner:

Chicken burrito (I ate about 2/3 of it)

I've been trying to avoid really bad things when I can but my family are rely insistent on pushing food on me and we're together almost all the time so it's difficult. Definitely eating way more than I want to and mostly the wrong things. Very stressful but it's so beautiful and hot here too :)

Sunday:

Lunch:

Lettuce and tomato salad with cheese and crisps/chips
Two pieces of cured meat thing, a bit like salami but not and much less fatty

Dinner:

White bread roll
Grilled pork sausage
Grilled potatoes with mustard
Ratatouille

Snacks:

Jelly beans
Chocolate
Cherries
Coke zero

The cured meat thing is something they seem to have a lot of here. It's actually quite nice but I really don't like the idea or look of it. I've got no idea how healthy it is or how many calories but the ones without tons of visible fat look okay. The ratatouille I made and it was really nice :) More oil than I wanted but it was delicious :)

Monday:

Breakfast:

Coffee

Lunch:

White bread roll with mozzarella cheese and tomato
Tuna and mixed salad

Dinner:

White bread roll
Boiled potatoes with mayonnaise
Roasted chicken and ham
Some beans I didn't recognise
Lettuce

Snacks:

Crisps/chips
Coke zero
Salted peanuts

I had two lunches today really because I wanted to get it out of the way and didn't think I had to eat later. I feel really bad about that now because my parents insisted that I eat some other snacks and then have dinner too. I didn't really like thr chicken thing we had though so I didn't eat most of that even though I listed it. Pretty stressful but it was still a really nice day overall.

Today felt pretty bad but we only really ate once and I didn't have any snacks so it wasn't the worst I guess?

Lunch:

Pizza with tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms, red onion, aubergine and another vegetable I wasn't sure of.

Snacks:

Diet orange drink
Coke (I asked for zero but the man forgot and I was too scared to correct it :()

Hi hana, good job getting through eating on vacation! I know for me not knowing calories can cause anxiety.

I know that feeling of having done badly even though the facts don´t bear it out. Only eating once a day and that one time being pizza isn´t ideal healthwise but it isn´t going to make you fat! And you even made sure there were some veggies on that pizza, so well done you.

Yeah that's definitely a big part of it :( Especially with something big and that I know will have a lot like a pizza or things I don't have much experience with and can't guess.

Thanks! :) I'm feeling a lot better about it thinking back today. My sister was saying she wants to go to another pizza place tomorrow or the day after so I might be having more pizza  Hoping I can eat some pizza and then other things to get a bit more variety though if I can.

My family all had these kebab things for dinner but they looked really huge and oily. I had mozzarella salad and bread which was actually just tomatoes and cheese, but I was really happy with that :)

Breakfast:

Cherries
Orange juice

Lunch:

Tuna and salad wrap with crisps/chips
Coke zero

Dinner:

Mozzarella cheese with tomatoes, herbs and oil
Bread

Snacks:

A couple of fruit sweets

Hey, well done on keeping an eye on your eating habits while on holiday!

Some ideas -

How about when you are not able to calculate calories or do not know what they are for a particular food, try to equate the portion sizes to the regular amount of food you would eat. 2-3 pieces of pizza equals about the same physical quantity of food that I get during a pretty healthy meal.

And when all else fails, eat slowly, and stop eating when you are no longer hungry (not when you are already full).

And if there are homeless people or beggars that you pass by or outside restaurants, they are always more than happy to take your leftovers. Not sure if you drive lot there, but we usually have car guards in all parking lots - they also appreciate it. Again, not sure if that is a valid option where you are :)
