Hala's Weight Loss -- starting April 15th

As of this morning, my boyfriend and I are both starting a diet and exercise plan to lose twenty pounds (apiece). We're both former athletes, both are the heaviest we've been in our lives, and we both want to sit at our desks without unbuttoning our pants. Twenty pounds for each of us should bring us back to our high school weight.

The plan is pretty simple. Three meals a day with small portions of healthy, non-refined foods. At least thirty minutes of challenging exercise per day. It doesn't seem like a real "diet" diet, until I think about how I've been used to living for the past 1 1/2 years: three desserts per day, snacking all day long and past midnight, sitting on my butt in front of the computer for hours at a time.

I don't have a timetable for completing the full twenty pounds, but I'd like to be able to see the difference in two months. If I plateau, I'll kick up the exercise. That's the plan. Anything too complicated will mess me up. I'm optimistic, though. The BF has the metabolism, but I've got rugby, so we about even out.

It's good to find a place where I can journal about this! Hip hip!

Today's meal plan
Breakfast: cereal
Lunch: yogurt, assorted veggies, and soup
Dinner: assorted veggies and pasta

Today's weight: 154

Today's exercise: pre-dinner neighborhood jog ... it's B-e-a-utiful outside

welcome!

If that's all you ate yesterday, you might consider a snack or two during the day. You'll boost up your metabolism to the level of your BF's if you eat something every couple of hours. It's actually quite amazing. It took me years to believe it and try it, but it's so true.

Hello and welcome to your diary!!
I am in a similar position as you, former athlete (I was a professional dancer 3 years ago, doing about 7 to 8 daily hours of training), highest weight ever, changing! Only my boyfriend is already really skinny (but he is like this through a lot of work because he was a very fat child).
I wish you good luck, but it seems you don't need it, you have a plan!!

Didn't do quite as well as I expected, but it was an abnormal day since I was working on my senior seminar presentation for hours. I stuck to my plan until dinner -- then had a bunch of dill chips instead of the prescribed "pasta and veggies." Good news is I didn't binge. Also didn't exercise yesterday. Yuck, but I'll allow it. The important thing is that I kept my eating down and was conscious of The Plan all day.

Today: treadmill

Meals:
cereal and yogurt for breakfast
Soup and Salad bar for lunch
small dinner TBA (dill chips have been binned)

Weight: The same, presumably.

I realize I can't plan my meals before the day begins. I'm way too impulsive. Yesterday I planned to eat lunch at the cafeteria and instead I felt like popping over to the Grille for fifteen minutes and getting one of their 100% RDA Vitamin smoothies. Then topped off the day with a spectacularly bad dinner of 1/2 a cream soda and some munchies. (And an orange!) Exercise turned out to be a long walk along the river. Saw a heron and flapped my arms at it until it flew away.

Yesterday's meal:
bowl of cereal
yogurt
big strawberry smoothie
orange
crunch 'n munch
1/2 leftover bottle of cream soda

Huh ... looks like somebody needs some protein.

Today's weight: 152
Today's exercise: Running! Rugby tomorrow so I'll get my muscle training in then.

Hi Hala,
Welcome to the WLF and to your diary!
Best of luck to you as you shed those 20 pounds :) Have you tracked your calories at all - looking at the meal plans it seems as they're a bit on the low side.

I used to be a calorie counter and it slowly drove me insane, but I do try to keep a rough count. On skimpy days it's around 1000 (too low, I know) and on fat days it's 2000. Yesterday and today I fudged up completely ... ate like I wanted to gain and maintain, and didn't exercise a bit.

Yesterday:
--instant breakfast
--BK Original Chicken Sandwich
--tasty grape and carrot salad thing
--ground beef stew with rice
--bowl of popcorn
-two 100-cal chocolate bars
--fruit snack
--applesauce

Today:
--bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats
--falafel sandwich
--I don't even know what the other thing was ... it involved cream cheese, vegetables and sprouts, like a cross between a bar and a sandwich
--box dinner
--fruit snack
--maybe six marshmallows
--two 100-cal chocolate bars

Weight: 152 according to the doctor's scale

Harumph. I'm having some trouble already. 1) I have terrible short term memory, maybe deliberately, so I can't seem to remember how many snacks I consume in a day. 2) I occasionally turn off my brain and just reach for things I see, i.e. the marshmallows and chocolate bars. Luckily I ran out of both. 3) I'm not exercising! At this rate I'll lose maybe 1 pound every six months.

I'm not giving up just because I'm following my old neural pathways! I have to push on. Tomorrow is another day. If I keep on writing, I'll keep on having to be accountable, so I'm sticking this thing out.

Obviously I am going to have to start rapping my own knuckles more.

Haven't updated since 4/18, but that's fine. Nothing much to report anyway. Been on a pretty steady 2,000 cal maintaining diet despite my conviction to cut my numbers.

I don't like to make excuses for myself, but I'm going to today, because I broke up with my boyfriend yesterday. So even though I went to rugby practice I spent a lot of time on the sidelines being moody.

Huuuge brunch today. Had 2 chocolate croissants. My only consolation is I have a game today and that's about 1 1/2 hours of rough and tumble exercise.

I'm going to have to reformulate my diet/exercise plan and post it here later. :(

Oh yeah ... Weight: 150
