Going from heavyweight computer geek to bodybuilding amateur

Sorry, this is kindof a cross post, but I wanted to have an introduction to my diary. I will be trying to keep all of you in the loop to what I'm doing as I move forward. I'm planning on posting weekly. Thanks for keeping me on the strait and narrow. :)

My name is Austin, and I’ve been a chronic overweight dude since I was in jr high. The most I’ve weighed was 230lbs and a size 40 pants. I tried some radical dieting and lost almost 70lbs before I changed back to old habits and gained most of it back again. I now weigh 205lbs and have a goal weight of 170. I’m using the scooby’s workshop workout plan with dieting using healthy choice meals. The workouts are great and I joined a gym nearby. Plus the healthy choice meals aren’t the worst things to eat. My old diet just consisted of Progresso soup, so this is defiantly a one up from that. I plan to diet and exercise until I lose the weight again and this time keep it off. I also would like to become an amateur natural (no hard steroids or creatine ect) body builder. I’m coming here for a means of finding people who understand what it’s like to have excess weight and have either lost it or are on their way to losing it. I’m sorry, but people who have super metabolism and can just keep weight off just don’t understand. I don’t know how many times I’ve been told by a guy who has never had more than 10lbs of total body fat in his entire life just to run a lot. In my experience it’s all about nutrition and exercise. Without one or the other you just don’t benefit. But I guess with me it’s a little different. Because I’m only 5’8-or 9 I’ve always been the short guy. This means that I don’t want to just be thin, I want to be thick with muscle. Everyone uses metaphors to classify self image. As of right now I want to be the mini bull dowser. Wide shoulders at the top, barrel chested, and in a V shape that goes to a 32 pant size. Once I’ve completed (or progress in) this task I will put up some pictures and put them up. My church that I go to always talks about ministries. I want my ministry to be a man who has had a weight problem, and not only beat it, but beat it into the ground with a 20lb sledge. I want to become a mentor to help people, and to be able to set people on a path to better health and better mental and physical strength. I believe in people, and the only person that stops any of us from completing our goals in us. We must make our vision a reality, and put it into action. I hope that I will be able to learn from many of you fine people as I take my journey. But isn’t that the truth, it’s not just about the journey, but the friends you make during it.

Thanks for your support
Austin

Hi Austin,

I'm in the same boat as you with hopefully the same goal if all goes well. The only difference is I'm 46 and never lifted weights in my life so I am starting from scratch.

It will probably take me 4 realistic years to compete but hopefully I'll win seeing there isnt many men my age competing as seniors! lol

So far, I am doing basic compound lifts and am seeing nice definition happening. Its all good good.

As for your goal of being a mini bulldozer....be a big one....you can do it!

Good luck and I look forward to following you on your journey!

I am assuming you are talking about the Healthy Choice brand frozen entrees or canned items? If so you need to think about getting off these as an everyday item! Don't make the mistake that a lot of others make by saying things like "well when I lose all the weight then I will see if I can be a bodybuilder" or "I want to lose the weight first and then work on being a bodybuilder" You need to start now, as in today. Start working as if you are a bodybuilder and you want to compete.

You need to get in your 5-6 balanced meals in each day. You need to lift heavy when you do lift and get your heavy cardio in starting at least 4 times a week. Being a bodybuilder takes a lot of will and you have to have the right mindset. The dieting gets VERY difficult and so does your social life.

You can get some good workout plans and diet plans in various publications out there just be weary of ALL the supplements and advertisements. Take the good info in and chunk the bad info.

Good luck! I was the fat kid who was sick of being fat. It took me about 4 years, but I systematized my diet and exercising and now weigh 195 pounds at 5'10" (with about 12% body fat).

You can do it! If you need any advice, feel free to ask or pm me.

Flumes,
Actually there is quite a few men over 40 that compete! At the recent NPC Southern Classic there were a total of 15 competitors over 40! 9 of them were over 40, 5 of them were over 50, and 1 of them was over 60. Honestly you can acheive it a lot quicker than 4 years! :cheers2:

Well, last two days have been doing great for my diet and exercise for the last two days. Been eating lean, and did legs on Wednesday and sholders yesterday. Plus I did 30 min of 15 degree incline 3 MPH then a 20 min the next day. Down to about 204 after about a week of work, but that could just be as simple as change in water volume. However I've been rockin in all round, and feel super confident in working arms tonight. Should be a killer workout for my biceps and triceps, plus I've been getting a good lean protein mix today. I'll let ya know how it goes for my workout. I'll also put up some progress pictures in the next week so i can see how things are changing. :patriot:

Had a killer arms workout on Friday and was able to get in some major work on my triceps. I’m now down to a size medium on my shirts. I’ve been losing a lot of fat, but gaining a lot of leg muscle at the same time. I know the feeling of being short, but I’m so wide at the shoulders and have a bigger bone structure so I’m gaining muscle somewhat fast over the last few months. I’m about to reach my peak as far as muscle growth pretty darn soon I’m thinking. Diet this weekend faltered a bit. Lots of ribs, hotdogs, and potato salad. So I’m back on the better food bandwagon this week and am going to work chest tonight. Should be a grueling hour of some hard work, but hey the juice is worth the squeeze. That’s all for now, I’ll update you again soon.

Getting Bigger!

Did a leg workout today, did 225LB on calf raises, and almost blew a vein in my head doing them. Was able to leg press 405 with less force than I usually have to. Maxed out seated leg curl machine and got up to just two weights shy of maxing out the leg extentions machine, seem like alot of stress on the knees though. Was a good enough workout to get the shakes. Keeping a good diet, and am getting 200 grams of protein a day from the diet. My calves are 16 3/4 in now. Not bad considering the stats of other natural body builders I'm seeing online. Most of them have 17 in calves. Working very hard to acheive my goals though. I will conquer!
