Going for it!

Thanks for the support guys. I've been plugging along - just have not been as regular about posting.

Had a bit of a challenge food wise this weekend. Had dinner with a friend Friday night at the Cheesecake Factory (luckily, I don't like cheesecake) - did I order smart - no - I ordered a grilled cheese and fries - with an iced tea (no sugar). I ate less than half of the fries - but finished the entire sandwich.

Sat - was at the same mall with my hubby - and he wanted to go to the Cheesecake Factory (after hearing that is where we went the night before). I am a creature of habit and ordered the grilled cheese and fries again! I only ate half of each and took the rest home. I did order a Lemon Drop Martini because they looked sooooo good (and it was). I usually don't drink - especially mid-day - I only had 1 and drank water with lemon as well.

Sat - Dinner - We had a gift card for Lucille's (BBQ - and I'm not a fan) - that hubby wanted to use. I could not find anything on the menu that screamed to me - settled on soup of the day - Potato - again, not a great choice - ate about a cup - no drinking though - left that to hubby - I was the driver.

On the plus side, we did quite a bit of wandering around, lifting, etc. - we were picking out plants for an area of our backyard.

Today - I feel great - we went on a hike with my BIL, SIL, and niece - I think it was about 7 - 8 miles, had my heartrate up pretty well during the hike (but not too high) - at the end of 3 hours it showed that I burned a whopping 2,009 calories.....and it didn't even feel like work! The runner in my kept wanting to creep out - I had do control myself as my niece (she's 7) wanted to run too - and it was just too dangerous if she lost footing. What this showed me is that I need (and am ready) to give trail running a try.

First day of my new work schedule tomorrow - we'll see how I do.

Hi Jennifer,

Don't sweat the Cheesecake Factory meals. Put them behind you and climb back on the diet wagon-lol. Nice job on the walk. I love trail running- it is my favorite thing to do and it is a lot easier on the knees and legs. There is more give to a trail than on concrete or pavement. Besides trails usually run along some nice scenery. You should try it for sure!! Good luck on the new work schedule- I am sure you will do fantastic!! Keep up the good work.

Hellloooo hellloooo girlie - i have been catching up with your diary.
You been doing good girl! it must be hard without having the trainer - but eventually you ll get the routine going.
You are always good with hiking! i m jealous - i love hiking - i hope i can organize some for May!
I m happy to hear about your work hours! good news! leaving that early is bliss! i never managed to get a bit of flexitime sorted! so well done!!
keep up the good job!
we all have cheat days (sigh - trust me i know what i m talking about)
hugs :grouphug:

Hey Justina - great to have you back posting!!!!!

So - official weigh in yesterday - up 1 lb to 235.5 - now I know my little extravagance over the weekend did not up me that lb - especially with all the working out I did. I can only hope it is the extra sodium from eating out as well as the hefty hiking trip - not getting the hydration quite right can impact sodium levels as well (or so I have read).

Today was actually the first day of my new schedule where I actually followed the schedule, came home and worked out. Hubby and I went for a jog/walk 5k. It was mostly walking - took us 50 min. We start and end going up a mega hill (our street is in the middle) - with a good downhill section in the middle. I don't know if I am spoiled by the treadmill or figured out that I enjoy trail running - but - it seemed like the biggest chore to run on the asphalt today. Although, it could be the 90 degrees outside! Regardless, burned a nice 600 cals - will take it. Have some planks to do tonight - tomorrow is weight training.

I don't know what it is - but when I find something I enjoy, that is all I can think about - now I'm back on hiking hiking hiking - searching what trails we are going to do twice a week and both days on the weekend! Hubby gave me a reality check - he will likely only join me once on the weekend - so - on the other non-weight training days, I'll be running outside or on the treadmill, going to the gym and hitting the elliptical, mountain biking (gasp! I really need to learn how to breathe right - I so want to do this - but the way I breathe through my mouth dries out my gums and causes me immense pain), or swimming. I really want to take advantage of the warmer weather and spend as much time outside as possible.

So far, I love getting in the office early - it is so quiet. It seems that I am busier too.

Hi Jennifer,

I know what you mean when you say once you find something you enjoy that is all you can think about- that is how I feel about running. All I want to do is get outside and run. Sounds like you are on your way with the new schedule. For breathing it is best to breathe through your nose- at least that is what they way about running. If you can learn to breathe through your nose rather than through your mouth you won't get tired as fast. I have tried that but I can't breathe through my nose when I run so it is mouth breathing for me-lol. Have fun with the new schedule.

Hey Ms Hiking!! wooohooo! i need to get into that -i m pretty sure its something i d enjoy too! i have to organize something when i m back home.
Well done on following your new schedule!!! all you need is the routine again!!
keep up girl

weight loss

An extra 40 calories per day may not seem like much, but consider this: If you were to cut a mere 40 calories a day from your diet, you would lose at least a pound in three months, or four pounds in a year!

Making small changes to your diet every day to help reduce your calorie intake will help offset weight gain over the year, and possibly even help you to lose weight! Try some of the ideas below to help you reduce your calorie intake. The more tips you implement, the more calories you cut from your diet.

Hey Cowboy - thanks for checking in. I had a nagging feeling this weekend - I'd grab the computer and forget why - duh - I didn't post!!! It hit me today....lol.

Everything is going well here....although it is very warm - hit 90 degrees again today - similar all weekend. Thank goodness for fans - jogged on the treadmill with my fan blowing full blast at me....with a bit of weight training on Sat.

We had planned on hiking at least one day this past weekend - but hubby is out of commission - apparently the run last week was not kind to him and he is dealing with some skin healing (apparently had an issue with rubbing - I guess it is time to get him some appropriate gear!)

Tonight, I'm doing kettlebell swings & ab work.

I had been making my own sandwiches for lunch - but I think I am going to go back to 6" subway veggie sandwiches - as I was having good success with losing. I don't find it terribly expensive - as I can eat 6 lunches for $15.00 - and I don't have to make it.

I'm happy - confirmed with my mom today that we will be going on a short hike for Mother's Day near my house. Hubby will not be joining us - but he'll have brunch ready when we get back. So at least I know I'll be able to enjoy a hike this coming weekend. Woohoo.

I wish it was 90 degrees here. Since I have lost this weight I am freezing all the time. I guess I don't have as much body fat now so the hotter the better. Unfortunately, it is NOT HOT here-lol.

Proper equipment will make a big difference for him. I used to get the same chafing but with the proper clothes it went away.

I love the 6" veggie sub from subway- YUM. It is one of my favorite go to meals when we go out for lunch- especially with honey mustard sauce.

Nice to have a hubby that will cook- I think my wife feels the same. She taught me so that I could cook dinner when she is out. I have actually turned into a pretty good one- if I do say so myself.

Have fun on your hike!!

Hey Jennifer, your sandwich souds good!
Summer has arrived here too! we have temperatures in the 80s now.
your hike with your mom sounds fab!
i m meeting up a friend this week - and hoping we could plan some hiking for the coming month - you have inspired me!!!
hugs

Aw - thanks Justina - very kind of you to say.

So yesterday I braved the heat again - but a little later in the day. Hubby needed a few prescriptions dropped off - so I decided to run them to the pharmacy - literally! Round trip is approximately a 5k (a hair more). Had a nice calorie burn - came home and my head was pounding - took 2 aspirin right away and had no lingering ill effects. I still find it more difficult running outside - due to the lack of cushion. What I do like is that I am not bored at all and I have to finish - I just can't decide that I'll stop at 2 miles or something.

I think I'll pull out the rope and jump tonight. I need to do some weight training as well - but I think I'll split it up.

Hi Jennifer,

5K- Nice Job!! Try running on the grass or lawns if you can- that may help a little with the pounding on your feet. How are your running shoes? Running shoes can make all the difference especially if you have to run on concrete. Have you been fitted with proper running shoes? If not and the budget is not too bad it is something to think about. I ran on bad running shoes when I first started and got shin splints almost immediately - once I change shoes they went away. Bear in mind too that runners will wear out between 600 -> 1000 K run - they may look fine on the outside but be finished on the inside. Look at me spouting what I learned in my 1/2 marathon clinic this week-lol. If you got a headache and you were running in the heat - did you have a hat on? Did you bring lots of water? Both things can cause the headache- be careful running in the heat. It is worse than running in the cold. Okay that is the end of your running lecture for now-lol. Keep doing what you are doing. Keep up the good work!!

Cowboy - LOL - Okay the rundown:

Fitted for proper running shoes = Yes (really like them)
Too many km's on them = No (I track each workout)
Tried to run on asphalt where possible - running through the neighborhood prevents large grassy areas
Wearing a hat = Yes
Water = Yes (Actually drank more than I thought I had when checked after the run)

I used to get shin splints - and I have to agree - since using proper running shoes, have not had that experience. I guess I prefer the give in the treadmill....or even better a trail (still need to check to see if I should get fitted for trail runners).

I know running in the heat is dangerous - If temps keep up at this level, I'll be switching to swimming rather quickly.

Not sure what tonight will bring for exercise - hubby wants to go out to dinner. He is getting a crown lengthening procedure done tomorrow and will be on soft foods for awhile. Ouch!

Sounds like you have it all covered. Sorry to make it so redundant-lol. I have never run in the heat as I started in late Sept last year and it was pretty cold already. This Summer running will be something totally different and I guess a learning experience for me. I don't normally take water with me when I run - who wants the weight of a container full of ice when you are trying to run in -30-lol. I have to buy some kind of hydration belt but I am not sure to go with the one that has 4 small bottles or the one large bottle. Decisions, decisions!! Have a good day!

Hey!!!

Top marks for the 5k outside!!! I have not run for weeks! Mainly due to time pressure but I was also v demotivated by realising that although I could do 5k on treadmill I just can't run outside!! However, my hubby is buying me running shoes in few weeks so this should resolve it I hope!!

Great job!!

Charlie

I'm not really sure how hot it is where you are but its pretty hot here where i live too. But not dry heat.

I don't think you should need to drink water during a 5km run but then I don't think running in the heat of the day is very good either.

Drink a glass or even two before you run and replace water when you get back.

I agree with how running outside in the world is so much nicer mentally, though i've never run on a treadmill. But even then a change of scenery is a good idea after a while. Gawd, now i feel like going for a run today. I will do it this arvo. Thanks for the motivation. :)

Good running shoes are really worth the money. But you don't have to pay top dollar either. Just buy a good brand and get fitted in a decent sports shoe shop. My shoes are getting old now but i just bought a new pair of insoles as a way to avoid blisters and i've realised that this will give me more time with them. Mine have gels in the heals but i don't think in the forefoot. They are nice and light and with a soft sole. That said i am not actually running a lot these days, mostly walking which is less demanding.

Hey Cowboy - sorry if my reply post was a bit short - not intended to be - Hubby was circling like vulture waiting to go to dinner (you would think he'd never eaten out before). As for the water container - yes was a bit annoying to carry - but the one I was using has a built in straw thingy with a loop on the other side - so I could let it hang of my finger and swing (just seemed most comfortable). I have a camelpack (fits like a backpack - is quite fitted to the body and has a long tube for drinking) - I just have not tried it out yet.

44 - thanks for popping by - It has been around 90 degrees here and it is a dry heat. I agree - a typical 5k run - I shouldn't need water. I had run the previous week about the same distance in the heat without water and got a really bad heat headache. Hope you made it out and had a great run!

LOL - that is okay. I understand about the hubby wanting to go- I am the same way- especially if we are going out to eat-LMAO. I don't think I want to carry a water bottle- I like my arms and hands to swing freely. I wasthinking about the camelpack- let me know if you like it or not. I don't know about running with a backpack either-lol.
