Going for it.

alcohol as a snack - i like that rational... and the lemon or lime in iit -that was a serving of fruit right? :D

Way to go for grooving back :D

Hey, most of my alcohols come with a serving of fruit in them. :D

A glass of cider with Goldschlager....a pint of orange juice with a screwdriver...hey, whatever works.

Haven't been back to the gym in three days because I've just been covered up with Christmas obligations. Not only do I have to buy and wrap my own presents, my brother and father are clueless when it comes to gifts, so I have to advise them on their purchases and wrap them, too. Ugh. That's one of the things that bugs me more than anything else about Christmas...people who are too lazy to wrap their own gifts. I've been doing my own gifts since I was a kid, I don't know why guys think they automatically get some kind of free pass from doing it. The whole "That's work for womenfolk" mentality really sticks in my craw sometimes.

Oh well. I'll just count it off as a good deed. At least I didn't have to go Christmas shopping with my brother or mother this year. Both of them cannot go into a store without spending at least four hours shopping in it, while me and my father are strictly list-and-run sort of people. We race to see how quickly we can get our shopping done, because neither of us like crowds.

I haven't been doing great on eating, and since my computer's been down for about two days until yesterday (don't know what happened to it) I haven't logged food, either. Needless to say, my choices haven't been amazing. Haven't done too badly on the food front, but during the holidays I tend to drink quite a bit. No more than anyone else in my family, but they're not watching their caloric intake. :D

The worst I've been doing, probably (other than the lack of gym time) is in regularly scheduled meals. I'm really not crazy about eating any meal except for supper in front of people (it's a weird little OCD tic) and so it's hard for me to grab 3-6 small meals while there is constantly someone loafing around in the kitchen watching me. I'm sure the compulsion is left over from being a binge eater as a kid, when I would wait until no one was around, then sneak into the kitchen and steal food to slink off and eat alone. I've only been averaging about 1-2 meals a day the last few days.

Curiously enough, this hasn't hurt my weight loss. Well, my weight has stayed relatively the same (my average weight right now is 183-I'm convinced the earlier drop to 177 was from dropped water weight) but I've gone slowly down from 184 as an average to 181-182. Which is within the pound-a-week plan.

I'm going to try really hard to be better about the whole eating thing, but the eating in front of people who are not also eating is really difficult for me.

I'm probably not going to hit the gym again until the day after Christmas, just because I'll be super busy between now and then and frankly, I need a holiday. To make up for it, I'm planning to start my 2x a day workout routine when Christmas is over, because the one workout a day is getting a little too easy. (In intensity, not habit.)

Instead of the gym for the next few days, I'm going to try incorporating some of my "boot camp" moves (lunges, push-ups, crunches, etc...) into my daily routine, so I can at least get some kind of exercise, and so my body can start getting acclimated to calisthenics, because I'm considering making one workout a day (my morning workout) a combination of jogging and calisthenics, while the afternoon/evening workout will be treadmill cardio and weight machines.

Damn all this fine holiday fare hanging around, too. What's a gourmand to do?

Food today:
- prime rib sandwich, lean and trimmed, on whole grain bread
- handful of Cheetos
Note: I actually made a bowl of them, but I could only eat a few before the grease and processed cheese started making me really, really queasy. I think it's a combination of change in taste preferences (all those veggies and fruits are paying on on the palate!) and a nasty hangover...
- 16 oz. sweet tea

Hi Kellye

I just popped in to wish you a Merry Christmas.

You have some great exercise plans for after Christmas.

Take care

Merry Christmas everybody!

I got some great workout stuff as presents, so I'm pumped to start again for the New Year!

Fitness-related loot:

- 3 new workout outfits
- jump rope (with digital readout and an audio count for your jumps)
- Yoga/Pilates DVD
- mini step machine
- 10 pound wrist weights (for step and jogging)

I'm so excited!

I'm gonna need all this stuff after Christmas is over. I've been eating some GOOD stuff. :D

I would strongly suggest not using the wrist weights when jogging -those have been the bane of orthopedists existance for years and they strongly suggest not using them -they can do a lot of damage to shoulders and neck... for steps - knock yourself out but for jogging and walking - put them away...

but sounds like youg ot a good haul - you must have been avery good girl :)

Hi Kellye

You got loads of good presents. I am quite jealous.

You are a lot stronger than me - my little wrist weights are just 2.5 pounds but they are much more convenient than the hand weights that I used to use.

Be sure to have a Happy New Year.

Take care
Love
Margaret

Yeah, I've been off the wagon for a few weeks. It was just too frantic to keep up with during the holidays, because I had Christmas, my grandparents' anniversary, my grandfather's birthday, and my brother came home from San Diego.

But I'm jumping back on for the New Year, and thanks to the metabolic boost I got from exercising the last few months, I didn't gain any weight.

So here it goes [1-2-2008]:

Exercise today (so far): Jogged to the end of the block and back (ended early because it was WAY too cold! I'll have to finish on a treadmill), went to my yoga class this morning, and 50 crunches. I'm going to go back to the gym with my parents for an hour at 5:30, too. Will probably do reps of crunches and modified pushups the rest of the day until gym time, too.

Eaten so far:
- bowl of Special K
- grilled cheese sandwich
- carrot sticks (with a little thousand island dressing)
- salsa chips w/ taco sauce

I did sooooooo good yesterday! I ran for half an hour in the morning, walked the Treadclimber for half an hour after that (I never thought I'd ever get to the point where I could do ANY physical activity after running for half an hour!) and I even went back to the gym last night for another half hour session on the Treadclimber. Also lifted arm weights (and boy, did I feel it this morning. That's what I get for skipping weight training for a few weeks...)

Diet today:
- bowl of Special K
- 2 cups of chicken rice (low-fat)
- peanut butter sandwich on whole grain wheat
- 3 pieces of dark chocolate (1 in. square)
- *another* bowl of Special K

Exercise today so far:
- half hour on treadmill (2 min. walk, 8 min. run, 3x)

I've noticed that running is definitely getting easier even though it's always been my least favorite form of exercise; my heartrate recoil is getting much stronger and my two minute rest breaks between sets of running are starting to seem more like reliefs and less like necessities.

I'm going to cut them back to 1 min. walk, 9 min. run next week, and the week after that, I'll probably try it with only two breaks, eventually cutting the walking out altogether. I want to be able to run 3 miles at a stretch within the next two months, so after that point I can begin to focus on my run time and tightening it up for PT tests at boot camp.

Also started tai chi yesterday (new program at the gym) and that's going to be a LOT of fun. Plus a little relaxation will be nice after pushing myself so hard at running and weights. My upper body strength is still abysmal, though. :(

I'm going back to the gym with my dad in a few minutes, as soon as he gets home. Hopefully it won't be too busy so I can get a half hour on the treadmill AND the Treadclimber, but since it's January, it's been thick as thieves down at the gym with all the Resolved Peeps Of The New Year. :D That'll be sure to wind down soon, though, as people gradually give up their resolutions.

I'm not giving up mine, though.

I went to yoga this morning (actually got up early on a Saturday!) but the yoga instructor didn't show up. She's the same semi-ancient lady who teaches tai chi, and apparently it's way out of character for her to not show up, so I hope she's okay.

Luckily, one of the senior students found a guided yoga CD, so we played that and had our sessh instead. Two of the students got pissed that she didn't show up without any notice and left, but most of us stuck it out and actually had a really great time. The lady on the CD was SO funny.

I'm headed back to the gym now to get in my daily run (I've decided I'm going to run half an hour at least six days a week, come hell or high water). I'm looking forward to when it's going to be warm enough for me to start running outside, but right now it's just way too cold.

So far today (food):
- fruit salad
- bowl of Special K
- small mound of scrambled eggs
- 1 piece of bacon

Exercise (so far)
- 1 hour of yoga

Went to the gym to do my run, but ran into a bit of a problem. I started feeling a tight burning pain in my left shin. It felt better whenever I took a period to walk/rest, but then began to hurt again whenever I started to run. I'm afraid it might be the beginning of a shin splint from pushing myself too hard.

I didn't quit, though. Instead of my two minute walk/eight minute run routine, I switched back to my starting routine (two minute walk/two minute run) which alleviated the pain and didn't seem to irritate my shin as badly, though needless to say, the run wasn't NEARLY as fun as it usually is. It wasn't outright painful, but it was definitely uncomfortable. Two minutes worth of running at a time was about as much as I could stand.

I elevated both shins when I got home and packed them with ice, and I think I'm going to skip the treadmill tomorrow as a precautionary measure. I'll just do weights and the Treadclimber instead.

Better safe than sorry. I don't want to develop sustained injuries this early in the training game. Tomorrow I'm going shopping for some support athletic wraps and hopefully a better pair of running shoes.

In better news, both my parents have climbed on the health wagon and my mom is taking over healthy meals from now on. They're both working out with me now (at least every other day--my dad is better about it than my mom, but she'll come around). She went out shopping earlier and apparently instead of BBQ ribs or other deliciously bad-for-you fare, we're having some kind of pepper steak with bell peppers and pineapple and rice. Yummy!! :D

Time to jump in a hot bath, soak my sore body, and anticipate an easy day tomorrow.

:gnorsi:

Dinner last night:
- lean beef stir fry with bell peppers and pineapple (I will have to put up the recipe in Recipes, it was delicious!)
- 4 mini baked egg rolls with sweet n' sour sauce (though I did not detect egg of any kind in them...they mostly looked like baked pizza poppers, but with cabbage and carrot in them..)
- white steamed rice with soy sauce
- piece of strawberry shortcake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and fresh strawberries :drool5: (couldn't resist)

Breakfast this morning:
- bowl of Special K (w/ whole milk)
- banana

I'm about to pop in my yoga/pilates DVD for the first time and see what that's all about before breakfast, though. I think if I start doing yoga and stretching my muscles thoroughly everyday, it'll help me avoid training injuries.

I kind of want to go pick up a four dollar bellydancing DVD I saw at Ross's, too. That looked like so much fun!! :D And it would be a welcome cardio break from running, running, running...

On the upside, the cadence CD my parents got me for Christmas helps me run and keep my pace. Although now I'm starting to hear "cadence" in everything, I've listened to it so much.

My favorite one:
"Feelin' good? Want some more? Want some more? Aiiiiyaah! Aroooah! Easy run...take it easy...going home...some day...easy run..."

It really does make the run easier. :)

I have a kathy smith belly dancing dvd that I havent used in ages, because my attention span is shot -but when I was using it -you could really feel in your abs...it's a workout that doesn't feel like a workout and barefeet are encouraged :D

In my humble opinion, any workout done in barefeet gets a +10 cool points.

That's why I love yoga and tai chi so much. :D

Lunch:
- small mound of scrambled eggs
- 2 biscuits
- 1 piece of bacon

Exercise:
30 minutes on treadmill (2 minute walk/3 minute run)
weights (arms, chest & torso)

I also went out and bought a nice pair of running shoes - Nike Air Max Conquer II. (Isn't the name impressive? I thought so :D)

They definitely helped out on the treadmill, and my shins didn't hurt at all. I know I said I wasn't going to do the treadmill today, but my whole family was on the treadmills and they wanted me to exercise with them, so I just did a soft run.

There is nothing like a new pair of shoes, or is that socks? Anyway, good shoes can go a long way when you use them.

Hey Stranger,

Thought I'd swing by your diary before I hit the sack, you are one committed chick! You make a point to go to the gym for half an hr almost everyday- that is wonderful! I've been working a lot lately and find it really hard to get to the gym, and the cold weather sometimes discourages me from walking there.

I think you're doing terrific so far! Keep posting on your progress :)

Lavender: Thanks! I was thinking of inscribing the words "Easy Run" on the sole of the shoes, because that's the title of my favorite running cadence from the Navy. :)

ArchRaw: I *love* new shoes and socks. I spent the whole time in Shoe Carnival yesterday telling everyone how if I won a couple million dollars, I would just go and buy twenty different kinds of running/tennis shoes/trainers/sneakers. I'm addicted to all the different colors and styles. :D

Misty: Haha, I'm really pretty lazy. I drive to the gym and do my running/walking when I get there. ;) Commitment is part of it, but fear of being the "fat girl" at boot camp is driving me pretty hard, too. I can't stand doing things half-assed, so I figure if I'm going to go into the military, I'm going to try and go for honors in physical fitness *and* academics for a change. I understand about cold weather, though. I can't stand the cold. (The fact that I like to walk around without clothes on when there's no one around and sleep commando probably has a lot to do with it. *blush*

Thanks for stopping by, everybody! :gnorsi:

Last night was a major cheat night. My parent's friends Sigrid and Duff were over, so I broke my no-alcohol rule and had three (light) beers with them. They also didn't leave until seven thirty, so my parents decided not to make the healthy rum-glazed ribs and eggplant recipe we were planning on making, and we just ordered Chinese instead.

- steamed white rice w/ soy sauce (1/3 of a pint)
- Mongolian beef (appx. a cup)
- 2 1/2 garlic chicken wings
- 1/2 pint hot n' sour soup with crunchies (I have no idea what to call those crackery things you put on top of Chinese soups...)

At least I managed to keep my portions under control.

No progress with my insomnia. After pretty disturbing dreams, I was up at four this morning, so I decided to run with it since I was in bed at 10PM last night. Six hours of sleep should be plenty, and I might hit the gym at 5AM since I'm already up this early. At least it'll be less crowded than usual. I think I have yoga at 9:45AM, too. So I might go a little later to link my two workouts together, after my parents have left for work.

I need to do some major stretching and massage first, though. My neck is SO stiff and sore. But I'm starting to get more defined abs! That's one of the advantages of sleeping naked all the time. You get to see instant progress when you get up in the morning, and you learn the curves of your body pretty well, so you can detect even the smallest changes.

Nothing like a six pack or anything, but I can see where my six pack will eventually be, anyway. And I think the thinner my face gets, the more sensual and sexy I look, too. Yay!! :D

Today is a weekday, so no more cheating of any kind! I also have to go to school at 2:20, too. I'm gonna make sure to dress up and fix my hair and makeup and everything, because I think I'm looking pretty good.
