Girls : Working out during that 'time of the month'

I had an absolutely shocking spin the other day. About 5 minutes into it I started to get cramps (from my period arriving) and oh my did I want to just walk out of there.

I couldn't even go easier on the workout because I was in perfect view of the instructor and she kept making comments about people slacking off, and if you lower the resistance they can tell.

ANYWAY, I was wondering, I am planning on doing a spin class tomorrow and I have my period (I could say something like Aunt flow is visiting or some other euphenism of sorts but lets not beat around the bush)...

Is this going to affect me a lot during my spin class? I usually feel a little less energetic generally when I have my period but I've never done a intense workout like spin during it. Plus I love spin and I still have to workout considerably as weight-loss is my goal.

Is there any way to combat the energy-drained crampy feelings before working out?

To answer my own question:

Ate a handful of nuts beforehand and downed some strong coffee shots - both helped energise me a lot, had a nueorofen plus tablet and a strepsil on the way was feeling a bit funny but still wanted to workout, silly, I know.

Neither of the latter two helped.

I barely broke a sweat in the class because everytime I started breathing heard my chest was aggravated and I'd start having a coughing fit, I was gettin sick and didn't know it till then.

I really CANNOT afford to be sick right now. I'm noticing results! I need to keep up the cardio! But on the otherhand the more I push my body when its trying to recover, the longer this damn cold will last.

sometimes a lil rest, and release, can move you further forward in your goals, than a continued gripping effort.

relax into things a bit.

as for spin on a period, just dont make a mess, and who cares.

Hehehe, she said a Ate a handful of nuts beforehand .... Was it salty?

hey you did said to "beat around the bush." On another hand, I applaud your effort to even workout during the cramps and "that time." Thank you for giving me another reason why it's nice to be a guy!!!! Like FF said, a little R&R is not bad either.

Sometimes your body needs a break, and if around that time of the month you need one, take it.

I will usually skip working out the first two (or even three) days. I did find Midol helps me now (in the past it wasn't very effective).

It won't kill you to not workout if you are cramping....I won't. I don't think it is good for your body if you are hurting while you are working out. Can't be very effective either...

Cut yourself some slack...rest......

Just take some rest, listen to your body.

I tried doing a double workout a couple of weeks ago which I don't do, ever, and I was like "yeah it will be fine i'll just do some light cardio tomorrow......" the next day I couldn't walk (I had done an Abs, Butts and Thighs class and Cycle Class), a week and a half later I still hadn't gone back to the gym...............................................
So in the end, even though I felt awesome doing a double workout, it put me out for too long. So I don't think i'll be trying that again till i'm a bit fitter. So if you feel like crap during the class, it can't be doing you any good.

i'm going to have to agree with this post. i usually take the first two or even three days off as well and pamprin works well for me. definitely rest up if you are feeling uncomfortable.

Yeah thanks guys i did rest.

But now I've come down with a f***** chest infection!

So I won't be working out for a while now. It sucks! Just as I was really getting into the swing of things, even noticing results!

i guess i'm weird...

When i had periods and cramps started to come on, I would do about 10-20 sit-ups. The cramps went away and I went on about my day.

before I had my kids I had endometriosis, and that wasn't an option :)

They had me on pain killers that would do me in. But before I was going to have a laparoscopy, my doctor was killed in a car accident. Horrible it was, he was one of my fathers dear friends (dad was a doctor too).

I didn't address the issue after that. Then the kids and it was better. I still have times where my cramps are too much for me to do anything. But, I also have times when right before I seem to have all this extra energy! If I don't over do it, I also don't suffer as much.....

Sorry about the cold. I hate when I get interrupted too :)

Take care of it and you'll be working out sooner rather than later......;)
