General Exercise

Just to start off - I'm a 19 year old male, ~6ft and 145 lbs. I eat a TON but I don't gain weight (yet). I don't think like I look small; but a lot of other people do, and I'm wanting to change that a little.

I'm looking for ways to build a little muscle or gain muscle tone that I can do at home. I've tried looking around on the internet already but I've read that some of the things I thought of first (push ups, sit ups) don't work well?

I'm not trying to buff myself out but just look better in general. What are some suggestions?

Get some more dumbbells you dumbbell ;)

You need to decide whether you want to work out at home or a gym. If you're uncomfortable working out around other people (nothing to be ashamed of, I used to be very self-conscious myself), or you prefer the comfort of your own home, invest in some simple home equipment. You'll need a barbell starter set, a dumbbell starter set, and a flat/incline/decline bench with supports for that barbell. This should run anywhere from $300-600 USD, so it's a hefty investment. Be sure you're commited first before you drop that kind of dough!

My suggestion would be to go to the gym. I recommend joining your local YMCA, they have a friendly atmosphere that's very condusive to beginners. They can get you started with the actual exercises.

Pushups, situps and the like are calisthetics. They'll slim you up, increase your endurance, maybe tone you a bit, but they're not going to build real muscle. Neither will cardio (jogging, biking, etc.). You can check out some basic exercises if you're working out at home, at this site: http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

Try one of those two things, and make sure you're eating enough. You're going to want to eat a lot of lean protein (skinless chicken breasts, cottage cheese, etc.) too.

Good luck!
