Gastric Ballon today

Hi Everyone

I am looking for some advice from anyone who's had a gastric balloon. I had mine inserted this morning but I am a bit worried it is not going to have any effect on me as I feel absolutely fine. Afterwards they offered me a glass of water which I tentatively accepted, expecting to feel very sick afterwards but actually just felt normal. They then offered me a cup of tea and in fact I had two cups without feeling anything untoward, so I even took them up on their offer of a biscuit to go with the tea. And still, no pain, no nausea, no vomiting. Ok, in fact, I think I might even feel a little bit hungry.

I am not particularly 'massive' to begin with (my BMI is 28), but really did expect more symptoms than this - at least for the first day or two. Has anyone else had this experience?

Hi there,

I was sick to begin with but within about 7 days I was completely back to normal. I could eat the same amounts as before and felt as hungry as often. My balloon comes out tomorrow (YAY), it's been in for about 7 months. I lost around 2kg's so yes, a very expensive way to lose the same amount of weight I could have with a bout of stomach flu. For what it;s worth I had 625ml of fluid in my ballon so a big amount, I have a bmi of 30.

I am now a month down the line. The first day was great, felt no symptoms at all and was actually worrying nothing might happen - the balloon might just sit there like a waste of space, but actually, that all changed the next day. Day two I vomited the whole day long and felt absolutely dreadful. That gradually settled down over the next couple of days although I started to really suffer from acid reflux and had to double up on the anti-acid medication and was drinking gaviscon like tap water. I also started to suffer from really bad cramps and thought at one point I was going to give birth to a big water balloon (although thankfully that never actually happened). By around one week however I was pretty much back to normal.

I can still pretty much eat what I want, although I do tend to feel full very quickly. If I over-eat then it really is quite uncomfortable for the rest of the evening. Even if I had a normal sized dinner, that would probably be too much and keeps you quite uncomfortable for the rest of the night. What I have been trying to do is eat toast for breakfast, nothing until dinner and then eating a normal sized dinner. That way I am eating a reasonable number of calories but because I feel so full and bloated afterwards, there is no way I would want to snack afterwards (which was always my downfall before!).

So far I have lost 18 pounds which, in four weeks, I am delighted with. My BMI has gone from 28 to 25 which is really what I wanted to achieve (a normal BMI). I would still like to lose another 18 pounds in the next five months although I appreciate that is going to be much more difficult than the first 18 but I don't think it is unrealistic.

Overall, I'd say I am pretty happy with things so far and will post back again in another few months to say how I am getting on.
