Garn's weight loss diary

It has been a while since I updated. I went to Seattle for a football game, and came home without gaining!!!! Last weekend we went shopping, and although I have not lost in a while I was very encouraged by the results. When I started this journey I wore 42" waste in pants and XXL shirts. Friday I purchased my first pair of 34" jeans and I fit into a Large for my shirts.
.........Congratulations...there....!!!!!!!!! THAT is such a HUGE improvement!!!

I'm so proud of you!!! Did I hear someone say Challenge.....:bigear:!!!....

....hmmm....I like challenges!!!...;)

Sooo, here is what I have been up to lately. I was on some medication that made me gain some weight. 14 pounds in all. I stopped taking the medicine about a month ago, and have shed 10 of those 14 pounds:)

For exercise, I have been taking a boot camp class 3 times a week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays (the off day for the boot camp), I have started running. Today I ran two miles. This Saturday, I start my semi-flag (almost tackle) football league. So that will be my fun day of exercise.

For the last week, I have been vigilant in drinking 80-100oz of water and have cut my sodium intake waaaaay down. It is helping I can tell, except I pee all the time. I feel like a woman ;)

As far as my health is concerned I feel really good...now I just need to get to work on the self esteem....will I ever not feel like I am fat?
....one day....I think we all fill feel that way....when....I would love to know....!!! I'm still waiting....someone....that had reached there goal in another thread said that it usually comes somewhere about 6 months after reaching your goal and mentally adjusting to all the changes your body went through and is still going through.

....I hope.....hahah! ;)

Hey Garn, you've come a LONG way and congratulations!

The feeling of being fat is different for us all. Some people never get over it....and they feel bad all the time and they make people around them feel worse and it's all bad :( Some people work hard at building their self esteem like you would work hard at becoming a better runner or artist or businessman or whatever. I had to use yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) to get away from clingy, self-defeating and promiscuous ways whilst dealing with being dumped by my ex boyfriend. It worked when not much else did. Whatever works for you! Running was great but it wasn't enough because I'm the type that needs to CHILL OUT. YOUR plan sounds really excellent and diligent--keep it up, and you'll see results and your self esteem will follow suite, as long as you are doing something else in your life that makes you happy :)

Well, yoga had me blissful and peaceful all day, and feeling PRESENT and aware--not to mention awesome because lots of the poses are sort of difficult and it's not SO much about flexibility than it is about strength. It really worked out my ab muscles, but a week of eating too much I think, made my abs get covered by temporary bunny-chub and I'm working on tracking my calories to get back to my weight goal-range. I'm going to start a Yoga thread in the Club section next week I decided.....

how does one determine their goal weight? I am shooting for 185 because that is what I was at when I was pretty much through high school until I was 21. From all the research I have done, that still leaves me "overweight".

OK, it is time to come clean. When I joined this site I was at 208. I was then put on some medication that made me gain weight. I got back up to 222. I refused to update my ticker, past 210, cause I was not going to allow myself to go back there. Well, I went off the medicine about 2 months ago, and I weighed in today at 209!!!!!! Now I just have to figure out how to update my little ticker thing.

Today we played flag football at work. It was a good intense workout and it was tons of fun. Being 43 pounds lighter than last year made a ton of difference. Today has been a good day.

on a not so good note, I re-injured my partily seperated shoulder...I seperated it playing flag football two years ago :(

I know what you mean about sending the ticker up. I hate to do it, but I do. When you click on your ticker it will pull up a graph and you can see where you went up and where you went down. It can be quite helpful when you are experiencing a hic-up to look back and see a steady downward progression with hic-ups all the way down.

As a child, I was not flexible. I can't remember how it happened.....dammit. I remember I started taking a yoga class at my junior college. And it went from there. If you're really interested, take a class and reserve judgment on yourself. Don't feel crappy if you feel surrounded by a bunch of pretzels. It's supposed to be self-paced, and letting go, and "surrendering" with breath and forgetting all your worries and frustrations, and ignoring your competitiveness or tendency to compare yourself to others. Bending is scary, because you have to trust yourself and relinquish control, except control of breath and that can be very uncomfortable and difficult (to control breathing). If you start a class, explain to the teacher that you don't have any experience and are a beginner so s/he knows and can be sensitive to your needs.

They offer a class here at work over lunch, so I think i will try it next week. Do I need a mat?

Tee hee! Some classes offer mats to borrow for the session. They usually smell like feet. If you can "stand it," use theirs, and if you like Yoga (give it some time, it's difficult and you probably won't like it right away) then you can buy your own. I currently have 3 mats and keep 2 in my car in case anyone I'm hanging out with wants a spontaneous Yoga session with me. So far that's happened 3 times!
