Gaining ME, kicking DQ to the curb

One month sounds good- We'll reevaluate on May 23, hopefully a few pounds lighter:) I am going to force myself back into the habit of obsessive label reading to be certain i'm not eating any corn syrup, HFCS, brown sugar, etc. It's amazing how oblivious we are to the number of foods that contain sugar- most diet breads even! I am having a mini-bachelorette party this weekend [i say mini b/c there will only be four of us and we're just having wine/cheese lil shindig] so i'll just have to be sure there's no candy/chocolate! Good luck friend!

By the way, your BMI is actually quite normal, if not low. And I know we all set different parameters for how we want to look, etc. but I was wondering if you might enlighten me as to what your eating/fitness regime is? Trying to steal new ideas:)

Also, we need to set the parameters for this no sugar thing- does this mean no artificial sugars also [i.e. diet sodas, anything with sweetener]?

Becca- I never use artificial sweeteners. Nutrasweet gives me headaches, while others make me take frequent trips to ladies room...and really they aren't very healthy. I try to eat as few processed foods as possible. But I also think they trigger cravings....so no fake stuff! As for soda, I never drink it. I do love Poland Spring carbonated water!

My BMI is very normal. I do, however have a small frame, and know that the extra pounds I am carrying are from junk food. It also doesn't help that the weight is not distributed evenly. I mean hey, if it increased my bra size, that'd be OK, but the pounds are in my mid-section. You know, that horrid midlife spread thing. It's also pride- I like to be the best that I can be. When I didn't eat sugar, dairy or refined carbs (no ice cream, no pizza, nothin'!), I was 137 pounds for ten or more years without even trying. I had more energy. I wasn't obsessing on eating or not eating junk.

Here is my current regime:

I calculated my calorie needs here:

I aim to have at least 25 grams a day of fiber (not from a caplet or drink mix) and less than 25 percent of my calories from fat.

No dairy or wheat (IBS diagnosed twice) or sugar, of course. I drink unsweetened soy or rice milks. I eat Ener-G bread (.

I am doing arm curls & exercises ten minutes a day. I am walking at least five miles a week or more, weather and time permitting. Sometimes leg lifts and sit-ups, but I want to start doing them daily.

Basically this is all stuff I did as part of my lifestyle, so I'm looking at it that way instead of a diet. :)

Okay I had a soda before I saw this but I swear it was my last one- I heart Diet vanilla cherry coke but no more is needed- need to get myself off of caffeine again which will be difficult since i love coffee so much. But I'm determined to do it. Mission number one.

And I only use Stevia [its not a regular artifical sweetener] but perhaps I'll stop having that as well. I'm prone to migraines and am allergic to dairy so there are so many things I already cannot enjoy! I can't cut out wheat as my trial with that idea made me very ill but I won't have any refined starches if I can help it. I've been considering doing one of those cleanses lately also. I have been plagued by stomach 'issues' my entire life and was diagnosed iwth IBS but I don't think thats the issue as my stomach doesnt respond to the foods that are supposed to help and i've found that a lot of the "triggers" [i.e. wheat] actually help to alleviate the problem. So, i'm considering doing a bowel cleanse to rid myself of the toxins in my body. Still researching that as I can't decide if its just another scam. I'm worried that it will help my stomach at first but once the first treatment is gone, my body will become dependent on it, etc. We'll see.

But I will be sure not to eat any sugar, as I was treating myself here and there lately. I'll go back to drinking 'flavored' seltzer- helped with hunger! And I actually found protein bars without refined sugar if I'm really desperate post-workout. But i find that in lieu of my eating disorder, i'm better off steering clear of these trigger foods. I just want to rid myself of my obsession with food!

What kind of foods will you implement into your daily food intake besides protein, veggies and fruits- i did this for about two months before but found the limited variety was what provoked me to stop being so restrictive. okay back to work!

I know sometimes if you cut out a food and then feel ill that *may* be part of the detox if you are otherwise eating balanced meals.

I eat lots of grains- oatmeal with dried fruit; rice, brown or white; fruit juice sweetened corn flakes; oriental rice noodles; barley; corn; potatoes; rice cakes and brown rice pasta to name some. :) I eat about five times a day- breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, then another snack before bed. I do my own baking and I use a small amount of maple syrup for sweetening.

Hmm..I think my body is carbohydrate intolerant- I've been reading a lot about how certain individual's bodies have a difficult time breaking down carbs and I am questionning if there is truth to it. I NEVER used to eat carbs and now I consume quite a few of them. Granted, they're all pure whole grain wheat [rather than refined 'enriched' wheat flour] and really high in fiber, perhaps it is blocking my weight loss.

Back up a pound today and I know it doesnt really mean much since its TOM and weight fluctuation, etc.- but its still frustrating darnit! Started this 'no-sugar thing for real today. Going to monitor it closely for these next two weeks to notice if I see any changes. Have a great day!

I'm feeling good today. I'm liking this one month of no sugar. I know, it's only day two, but I'd be obsessing over eating/not eating/limiting/having gone over my limit/loss of control, etc. I am FREE!

I'm going to try staggering my calories, as I have been reading that this keeps your metabolism fired up. My goal is to alternate between 1,200 and 1,800 every other day. My daily average goal is around 1500.

That sounds like a good plan. Feeling quite discouraged with the lack but still no caffeine or sugar- my tea tastes pretty shitty without my sweetener but i'm sticking to it. As I noted in my thread, our 'no sugar' plan really coincides with the second phase of the South Beach Diet. I'm considering starting phase one next week to jumpstart everything- I'm feeling so discouraged, though:(

Hey girlie! I always drink my tea without added sweeteners! Have you tried Celestial Seasonings naturally flavored herbal teas? They are yummy.

Discouragement is OK if you don't get discouraged by it. Does that make sense? I think it's normal to feel that way, but you don't have to let it dictate what you do.

Discouragement (not you and your efforts) is lame. Ignore the bastard. :D

Thanks- yes, what you said did make sense. See my thread for my response to what I'm doing from this point forward as I'm too lazy to repost it here:) Hope you're having a brilliant day!

I am still glad I am sugar free for a month. Husband ate chocolate ice cream, mine, that I bought before my pact with myself. I would have eaten that whole pint. Instead, I ate healthy foods and then focused on other things and wrote in my offline journal.

I feel strong today. :)

I took some more "before" shots as motivation.

Guilty as charged....

I would like to use this space as a place where I can tell on myself to keep myself honest, and use it as motivation.

I didn't weigh myself this morning- there was no power due to the Nor'easter and it was too cold without the heat on.

I had a great week. I met my calorie goals. Until tonight. I "celebrated" by going to DQ. DQ has always been my addiction.

I don't want DQ in my life. I want ME and my goals.

Why was this so much easier when I was younger? I wonder.

too, I to am the victim of the DQ Blizzard today. Try rewarding yourself with with a day at the spa, or some tanning session, or a message, or go out and buy clothing that is a size smaller instead of food treats.

Blizzards stalk us!

I just had the first sip of my morning coffee. Mmmmmmm.

I haven't been sleeping well. I think I can feel fat burning and my digestion getting readjusted to not binging on sugar! I need beauty rest, though.

I bought "Healthy Aging" by Dr. Weil. In it he talks about the devastating impact of sugar on the body, and how it may speed the aging process. This may be a bunch of bunk, but when I was sugar-free for ten years, I always looked really young. At 30 I looked 18. Then it seemed like I aged a lot over the last eight years. Could it be from me eating junk? Or marriage? :p Or maybe I'm just getting old!

I am still a sugar-free zone!

Have obviously failed with this no-sugar thing but I've successfully cut out caffeine. Am cutting out sugar Sunday as I'm startin TSB- Sorry I couldnt keep my end of the bargain:( Thought you mentioned that you didnt drink caffeine? I've cut that out finally 'cause its just not good for me!

Nope, never said I cut out caffeine; I just have it in the morning, then herbal tea the rest of the day. :) If I have more than my morning dose I get really wacky!

What is TSB?
