From alpha testing to the QUERCUS 200

Q, are you a hunter?
That grilled duck and deer breakfast sausage sounds great.
I haven't been hunting in 5 years due to the fact that I was "working" in the Middle East for the past 5 years. This will be my first year back in the timber. Got my deer tags in the mail a couple weeks ago. Can't wait to get back into the stand again this fall.

Cate, I agree with the sentiment although we don't have eucalyptus or wattle and jumpers are either cables used to start a car or one piece baby clothes. Looking it up it seems that an Aussie jumper is what we'd call a sweater (a knit top).

GGH, yes I hunt. I don't duck hunt but it's popular with the younger guys I work with so I score a lot of free duck.

For the last few years I have taken up pistol hunting. I took a deer with my S&W 357 magnum and a handload round, I've hunted with my Ruger 44 mag, and I also have a Thompson Contender with a 35 Remington barrel for deer that hasn't gone hunting yet. I hunt rabbits with a Ruger MKIII 22 pistol with a red dot on top.

I handload for the revolvers, but I haven't done that in a while. The deer are pretty small in my part of Texas and I hunt in bottoms from stands with limited visibility so iron sight pistol hunting is fairly practical. It's a lot like bow hunting in that you need to practice a lot and range is shorter. I took a doe with my 30/30 last year as my back injury kept me from practicing with the pistols. I like Hornady XTP bullets for both revolvers as they expand reliably at a large range of speed and stay together well at the top end for both revolvers. I used a 158 grain XTP in my 357 at a measured 1355 fps avg which is a max safe load with Alliant 2400 powder (7 5/8" barrel). With the 44 I can throw a 240 grain XTP at the same speed with the 10.5 inch barrel without loading near the edge.

We also have feral hogs which my Father has a trap set up for those. I plan to try to get a feral hog this fall before deer season either with the 44 or 35.

I can shoot in my back yard and hunt in my woods as I have a little chunk of property and live in the middle of nowhere. Aside from 22 pistols I have the most rounds through my CZ75B (9mm). You might be familiar with that one in your line of work.

My next purchase will likely be another contender barrel, but having 22lr, 223, and, 35 Remington I can do just about everything that pistol is capable of. The 35 Rem is a lot of cartridge for a pistol and is suitable for elk, but the 223 makes more racket coming out of the closed breach although it kicks like a 38 special. Even with the 14" barrel the 223 makes a lot of sound and concussion which makes me think it's burning a big chunk of powder outside of the barrel. There is still plenty of speed on the round for anything I could do with iron sights.

IL has a rep for big bucks as does TX. The problem is that TX is big and I live in the piney woods with mostly smaller deer. We have a healthy population and they are tasty so I'm fine with our small deer. What do you hunt with? What type of hunting do you do?

Venison 4oz cooked 170 calories 34 grams of protein. That's better than the protein powder and tastes like the great outdoors mixed with victory.

27 x 4 oz venison breakfast sausage cooked dry with a ton of spices. 918 grams of protein. Chilling in the fridge before being split between the freezer and deep freeze.

Next weekend will be venison jerky.

One step closer to road/track running again. At least the elliptical can get the HR high enough to keep my cardio for running and approximates the movement unlike the bike.

That looks good! And the elliptical sounds good as it takes the impact out of each stride and should make your joints happy. Do you get any swelling still or is everyday movement ok again?

Ooooo. Venison sausages. There is an old forest near where we live. Henry 8th used to hunt there. Every autumn (fall) they cull the deer and wild boar. I have a 'contact' from whom I buy for the freezer once a year, very cheaply. My husband pointed out that he was probably a poacher. When he saw my face, he said 'Well don't you think it a little strange that he delivers after dark, will only take cash and leaves the motor running when he delivers?

My main love in hunting is archery. I shoot a Hoyt Vipertec set at 72 lbs and 27" draw. I use Easton Epic arrows with 100gr Slick Trick Broadheads (love these broadheads). I also hunt with my Mossberg 500 12ga for shotgun season. Hunting in Illinois is pretty limited on what you can use (no rifles), so I don't have any rifles except a Mossberg .22 pinkster I use to teach with and for squirrel and Rabbit. I pretty much live in the woods during Deer Season, but also love to hunt Turkey. I've always wanted to go hog hunting down in your parts and Florida but just haven't had the chance.
I've also got a Ruger LC9 for my home defense. Yea is just a small 9mm but I got it small for a reason, and that is so both my wife and daughter can use it when/if needed. With their small hands it works good for them. I'm looking to buy myself an either .223 or 5.56 AR, Glock 17, and possibly a muzzleloader in the future.

Brawny, I'm happy to be getting the HR up again. Hopefully I'll be back on the road and track soon, but I am okay with the elliptical as long as I need it.

LaMaria, I still have a bit of soreness and swelling in both knees, but it is better each day. I'm pretty good on the day to day moving around, but I feel it.

Dumpy that forest sounds really cool. The woods that I hunt were the hunting grounds of the native American Caddo tribe. I have an arrowhead that I found as a boy on the same property that I still hunt.

I hope he isn't a poacher. It's illegal here to sell hunted game. I will say that if it is deer season and daylight I tend to be hunting or cleaning game. That would explain the night time at least. Cash because he doesn't want to pay taxes or have a check bounce. Motor running???

GreyGhosthunter, I don't archery hunt, but I enjoy shooting bows. I bought a PSE compound about 10 years ago and hunted 1 season. That was a waste of money because I haven't hunted since and I prefer recurves for shooting. I have two old recurves. A Ben Pearson hunter that's 52# and a Spyderco made in the 50's with a 48# draw. I haven't shot in a while. I did so regularly when I was living in the city, but now I tend to reach for a pistol.

I like the LC9. It's a small package for 7+1 9mm and they didn't downsize the trigger guard and trigger which my sausage fingers like. A buddy has one I've shot and I have come very close to buying one. I really like Rugers. I have a Ruger 10/22, MKIII, and 44 Super Blackhawk. I've had the 10/22 for 21 years this month. I couldn't even estimate how many rounds I've put through it. I've had my 12G mossberg 500 for about as long. The forend rattles a bit if you don't hold it tight, but it probably cost my Father around $100 new to get it for me and you can't tear them up.

Still doing great, I really hope all residual pain and swelling will be gone soon. Unless of course that would get you to overdo it with running, in that case it should stay a little longer than strictly necessary ;)

Thanks LaMa!

Ran 4 straightaways on the indoor track right after to test the knees. They're good a bit stiff now, but ready to start back running.

Also my weight hasn't changed. Still eating too much, but now that I'm back on track with exercise it will start it's slow descent again.

I guess I don´t have to tell you to start with a short distances for a week? I´m going to do so anyway: take care of your joints please and listen when they tell you it´s too early for a full run. Best of luck!

Hi Q, What is it like where you live? By that I mean your immediate surroundings. I think you have woods(we call it bush) adjoining your place. Is it dead flat? Do you have much land? I can't really imagine Texas, except for what I have seen from movies & they were probably not set in Texas anyway & I have never been one for Westerns. I think we'll have to go have a good look at the US one day. My trips to visit my sister in Baltimore, when she was ill, didn't enable me to get much of a look at the rest of the US, except for what I saw from the plane, flying across from the West to the East & drives around Pennsylvania. I did get to NYC, but just on a day trip. It was one of the most exciting days of my life! I love hearing about the plants & the wildlife you mention occasionally. Everything seems so different.
Hope you heal soon Q & can get back to doing what you want. It sucks to feel restricted! Cheers, Cate.

This is my woods. Our little sitting place in the front yard. A mix of pine trees and hardwoods. I have 10 acres mostly hilly with two small streams. I have a small yard and all the rest is wooded. I'm on the top of a hill. There is a large creek that runs into a lake about 1.5 miles from the house. Lots of lakes and rivers here. It's supposed to be 100F (nearly 40C) tomorrow. All of Texas gets hot. The panhandle (most northern part) gets really cold. We have temperatures below freezing every winter and very little snow. My part of Texas is the pineywoods and is more similar to the southeastern US like Mississippi or Georgia. A lot of Texas is fairly dry. The north, west, and south are pretty flat on the whole. Central is scrubby and hilly.

It sounds & looks beautiful Q! Thanks for posting that photo & for giving me a really good description of where you live. I'm now going to go look up more about Texas! ( & Arizona, while I'm at at it.)Cheers, Cate.

Sounds lovely (apart from the temperatures), looks lovely, I wouldn´t have expected it to be so green!
