Why do Americans call Football Soccer?
Football is the most popular sports in the world.
Is it because Americans suck at it and they want to defame the entire sports?
American Football should be changed to something like "Throw Ball." There is hardly any foot used.

And what's up with Baseball "World Series?" How many countries really participate in that series. Just one!!!
They why the heck is it called "World Series?" Let see how America does if Cuba, Japan and other countries were allowed to have a Basevall tournament.

And thats why you cant live here.

It's just a borrowing of a word, and the meaning changed over time and eventually they had to give the original a new name when it also became popular.

There's tons more of them but im guessing posting it on a site dominated by Americans is pretty pointless!

Can't see 'Throw Ball' catching on!

Just take pleasure in the facts that

A - They are rubbish at football/soccer
B - American sports are so dominated by media and advertising that economics has sucked any soul out of the sports; and that their playing fields are little more than vacuous spacious for big business for flaunt their latest products to a captive audience.

Yes, Pau, I'm sure where you live all your players are fantastic, all better than Americans, and everything makes perfect sense to the rest of the world. I guess aside from all the running and kicking off of the ball there's no foot used in it.

When all the countries compete against each other in baseball, it's called the Olympics. And we do just fine, thanks.

And from my fellow Americans to you...you're an idiot.

A - Yes, our Olympians suck and that's why they are at the Olympics and some of your players are not.

B - To some extent this is true. But we still love our sports.

Forgive my ignorance - live in Britain and dont follow Baseball that much - but isnt it called the World Series because the World Newspaper (or something to that effect) sponsored it in the early days, and hence it gained and kept the name "the World Series"?

Bit like the FA Barclaycard Premiership - doesnt mean its a league table of credit cards does it?!

This a democracy, so, I second that last part.

yes football/soccer is the biggest game in the world that doesn't mean that everybody in the world calls it football i.e. football in Ireland could be Gaeilge football, in oz footy is aussie rules etc etc and Pau where are you from yourself.

and when america plays other countries at baseball it isn't just the oly as there was the recent world baseball classic which japan won, and in which the USA lost 2 of their 3 pool games

Who cares.. American Football was our sport of choice long ago and as soccer became increasingly popular in the states we weren't going to change the name of our more popular sport just to satisfy you Europeans, we adopted our own name to avoid confusion. What does it matter to you anyways?

btw - we suck at soccer because we don't put much effort in it. So, in that way.. your lucky. Because if America wanted to be number one in soccer, we would buy out the top 100 players from around the world and create a great league.

So, be happy we are not 'into' soccer like you are, else your domestic tournaments would be filled with half-rippened or over the hill players as all your stars would sell out to America and take a 10 million/year contract as we smile and give you a good old American one finger salute.

Did you recently get denied for a Green Card?

We're 6th in the world, I don't think that qualifies as sucking. And just because we use a different word for something means we're 'deframing' the sport? That must be why huh? And I'm sorry we're you under a rock last year when there was the World Baseball Classic? Or perhaps like evo said the Olympics? Or those don't count?

The fact that you typed basevall must mean you're taking away from our sport, and dislike round stiched balls.. See that correlation? Yeah, neither do I.. Kinda like your comparison.

Jungleb, you are definitely an idiot. You were so quick to assume me for an european. So now there are only two kinds of population, American and European that inherit this earth? Hmmmmm....I wonder what happened to the rest. But you are still doing better than others who think only Americans exits in their holy god given place.

Ok, I understand your point that since American Football was more popular there was no point of changing it's name as soccer's popularity grew. But the fact that it is being called "American Football" clearly shows that whoever named it first was aware that there was another sport called "Football" around. Or else why label it "American", right? May be the American's wanted to own the name or may be they simply were not creative enough to come up with a new one.

And besides America buying best players from around the world, for your kind information, there already is a club in Europe doing that. And yet they lose with other teams.

The USA are ranked 6 according to FIFA's extremely biased rankings system. Basically teams are awarded ranking points for wins, draws or losses irrespective of the quality of their opponents.

So, whilst the majority of the top twenty teams get their points from playing qualifiers against continental neighbours that are often high up the rankings tables, the USA and also Mexico manage to stay in the top twenty after beating Guatamala, Peru, Greenland and other such 'soccer' heavyweights.

As for the buying of players into your new, rich superleague - Quatar and Saudi Arabia already try to do this but they end up with the overpayed over the hill players. Chelsea and a few other major European names have also tried to buy success but real victory comes from a passion that the majority of US sports have had bought out of them.

And even if you did buy in the best 11 players not one would be American anyway so your national team would still be rubbish.

Nothing like a bit of USA vs the World sporting debate!!!

:)

He assumed you were not an American because of the tone you took in your first post. "All Americans.." or "Why do Americans..." makes you sound like a foreigner, becaus in the U.S. it is common for us to associate our sports teams with ourselves (ex. "We"). He then narrowed you down to a European, because only some ex-socialist ignorant leftists would come on to a primarily American forum and start talking **** about not only our sports, but our country itself. If I could go a step further, I would say you were French, probably still pissed off about how bad your grandpa got his ass handed to him in WWII.

In America, we don't call it "American Football" (which is a phrase I have only heard been used once or twice in a foreign language class). He was just clarifying that he was talking about the our football and not soccer.

I for one don't even think our Olympic rankings are a show of our baseball skill worldwide either. I don't know much about baseball in the Olympics, but I do know that in basketball, many of the U.S.' best player don't play in the Olympics because they are in the NBA and/or because they don't want to get hurt.

Lastly, "World Series", whether named after a news paper or not, is a perfectly fine title for our final baseball series. I mean look at the team members - Asians, Cubans, Europians, Second generation immigrants, South Americans. MLB is not diverse by some regulation or AA nessecity, it chooses the best of the best all around the world. When someone pops up (ex. Matusui? - "Godzilla"), they offer him/her a boatoad of money and a chance to play with the big fish. Godzilla had some sick numbers when he played in Japan, and now in MLB he's met more challenging opponents.

Tex,
Now you are calling me french!!!! You are an epitome of ignorant American. Opps, was that a pleonasm?
Look beyond America and Europe. There exists Asia, South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica.
Anyway for your information again, let me remind you, I am neither french nor do I have any association with France, but as a free history lesson to you if your pea-size brain can handle, if it was not for the assistance of France during American revolution against Colonial British, you would be singing "God save the Queen." So before you start to run your verbal diarrhea and prove to the rest of the world how ignorant, foolish and arrogant Americans are, please do a favor to yourself and your country mate and get your history lesson right. Will you?

Cheers mate!

Height of Irony: An American calling others idiot.

And this is ironic why?

Perhaps if you didn't come across an an anti-American, you might be received better. But you come on here and, as has been said, label posts "Why do Americans" etc etc and you call the US's players as a whole horrible soccer players. It's been pointed out that we're 6th in the world...not to bad for a nation that doesn't overly have much concern for soccer as compared to other sports and yet other countries rally around soccer and don't do much better or don't even rank.

We, in America, choose to call football football because we can and that's the way it's always been with the "game of pigskin."

Then you come across with this statement-->"I wonder what happened to the rest. But you are still doing better than others who think only Americans exits in their holy god given place."

Where did that come from? This thread was about not understanding why in America we call soccer soccer and football football but apparently you have some sort of anti-American agenda going on that you want to spout out.

This is not a political forum...i.e. we don't care what your prejudiced or racist views are. You come on saying some slanted things towards America in general about our nature. I think that's funny considering you are the one spreading your negative rhetoric.

For the record...soccer (oh, I wouldn't want to offend you-football) might be popular to a lot of people but so many countries have other sports that they pour money into and look more highly at than soccer or football. One example is Japan who spends most of their past-time engrossed in Kendo.

And again, as was said, we don't call it American football; we call it football. Non-Americans call it football. Hell, even the Hispanics that play for fun and leagues around here call it soccer and/or football exchangably and I have yet to see anyone get upset about it.

Except that S. Americans are Americans. I could be wrong but since my mother is from Venezuala and considers herself part of the Americas she is an American.

And the only reason France helped us is because they hated England...it wasn't because "oh, let's go help those Colonials out." Not to mention England did a pretty good job of screwing themselves over in the beginning by their fighting style. We were close to losing the war but we still won. Might I also remind you that if America did not help France in WWII they would be speaking German?

What I don't get is why you are here. All you have done since you've been here is posted about a double-chin and anti-American rhetoric. You still haven't said where you're from...I guess national pride doesn't run with you...just hate towards a complete nation for whatever stupid reason. You're the worst kind of racist (if there's one worse than another)...you come off as hating Americans as a whole when we're so diversified in thought, belief, and race. I live next to a Hindu and across the street from me is a Christian, an atheist, and a Muslim. I have African-Americans (note: most are starting to dislike this title), Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and a Jamaican as neighbors.

lol.. can you find anything else to try and come up with while straying from the subject. Your arguements make you look like an imbecile.

That goes to show you how little you DO know about us. We never coined 'American Football' as our sport. We had the AFL (from like 1960-69)but that had nothing to do with your simplistic deduction to 'look at us'. Now the league is the NFL and we have always called it simply football. The 'term' American football is simply used to separate sports, in context, similar to Football as we know it and only used in when differenciating is necessary. For example Canadian football. Oh, btw.. go bitch at them moron. American football also spawned from Rugby and we simply named it football because we adopted a new ruleset. The canadians then adopted a similar version.

And besides America buying best players from around the world, for your kind information, there already is a club in Europe doing that. And yet they lose with other teams.

Sorry, but club Europe doesn't have the money we put in sports. Maybe you should go down the list of names in our hockey league for a good example. It amazes me how 'some foreigners' will find anything they can to try and feel better about themselves. Surely, you can find a political forum and be much more productive.

Looks like I hit soft spot of few Americans here. Or should I say, I nailed it.
HA
