Flyer's diary

The gold star thing just applies to using the license as ID in any federal government screening check point, like in airports. So you can walk or drive coast to coast without one, but you can't get into a federal courthouse. In Utah they are just mailing out new driver's licences with the stars, no new screening or anything, just new licences with a little gold star. I don't see how that is going to be much help for anything. I suppose some states are taking advantage of it to collect more fees.

I don't think it is legal to hold drivers licences in more than one state. And they are getting better at checking up on you. When I moved to Utah I got in trouble for not getting a Utah license right away, I transferred my insurance to Utah and when Florida discovered it (quickly) they suspended my Florida driver's license. I had to quickly to get my licences in Utah. Florida had to have my old Florida driver's licence and auto licenses back along with a letter of explanation to take the suspension off of my record. You don't want a driver's license suspension on your record. It was a pain.

.... I don't think it is legal to hold drivers licences in more than one state. ....

well, this might still be the one caveat that works, but when i got that Va license, i had a NJ license that was valid for both auto and motorcycle. i didn't plan on failing the motorcycle written test, but it was only 10 questions (shorter than the auto part) and since i didn't really study for it, i missed just enough questions. so when i was issued the Va license, they let me keep the NJ license because it was my only valid motorcycle license. again, this was about 1985, so the laws may have changed on that, but it would still be a weird situation.

when i got to Ca shortly after that, i had to get my car registered right away, but for a while i kept my Va license. i remember getting stopped by a state trooper for speeding... ironically on my way back from the DMV. when i showed her my papers, i had a Va license, my car was registered in Ca, but my insurance card said i still lived in NJ. after a few seconds of a very puzzled look, she told me to get a Ca license as soon as possible, gave me a warning and let me go.

Looks like there maybe some chili (as in con carne) in your future.

What does the chimayo taste like?

I like all things hot and spicy, but being from Louisiana I am more familiar with Tabasco and Crystal than some of the Mexican peppers.

watching the original version of H.G. Well's, The Time Machine this morning.

Alan Young... 1919-2016 (96)
Yvette Mimieux... 1942- ... she'll be 78 in 8 days.

Sebastian Cabot... 1918-1977 (59)

i just stumbled on this guy...two great back to back recipes for New Year's Day...

.... nothing wrong with bacon. it's regularly a part of my diet.

The fire map you show is a bit misleading, in that while there are fires in all states, some of them within states are bigger than others - but the country is tinder-dry, and we will not be able to feel anything's over until late March at the earliest - and even then the next season will be looming. This
gives a hint of how big some of the east coast fires are.

Amy and Flyer, those are some very impressive, and scary, graphics. The satellite loop makes it look like pretty much everything but the desert sand is burning.

Has anything on this scale happened before?

Are most of these fires naturally started, ie lightening, or man caused?

Will there come a time you just run out of fuel to burn?

already had the x-rays and going in this morning for blood tests, an EKG and sonogram... all to get two little screws taken out of my toe.... geez... glad i'm not having a bypass...!

not to be a harbinger of doom, but i've never been so concerned as i am right now that our moronic leader is going to trigger a world conflict soon though his ignorance of global affairs. parallels to the start of WW1 are a bit too worrisome. i don't really need more stress in my life.

I don't like talking politics here, but I could not resist saying I agree 100%. I am registered as an Independent and usually pretty politically neutral and middle of the road, voted for as many Democrats as Republicans, but DT has really pushed me to the Dems... And its not his conservatism or lack of it that's the problem, you hit the nail on the head.

the "you know" factor...

this may seem a bit simplistic, but i tend to judge someone's general intelligence/ knowledge by the number of times "you know" pops up when they are speaking. i listened to Katie Porter speak for about 10 minutes yesterday... her count... zero. don't let external appearance fool you, though. another zero speaker... Iggy Pop. that's it... no more politics for the day.

sorting through an ancient stack of paper the other day...

my 3rd Class "DJ" license... our college radio station required a trip to NYC to get this.
taller then... lighter now? ... :)

FCC 3rd Class RTL 01.jpg

i wish it wasn't so chewed up but all the licenses needed to be on display at the station, so every time a new one was posted or an old one taken down, a new thumbtack hole was created. a relatively easy test with a caveat... there weren't many questions asked (i think it was ~15) out of a question pool of a few 100, i recall if you missed 2 or 3, you failed.

well within my current range... little ups are never a problem.

01.04.20..161.5.jpg

thought it might be worse... being a little sick it was a struggle to decide whether or not to daily fast a bit less. most days this past week were 12/12 fasting days.

...Do you still DJ, or do radio work?

well i wouldn't turn it down now, but no... that was a college activity i'll fondly remember. WCLH was more than the basic 5W campus station, i believe we were 500 watts (probably why we needed the 3rd class license) with a microwave link to a transmitting tower on the rim of the valley were we in. i used to get requests a few hundred miles away from SW Pennsylvania to upstate NY. we had a non-commercial license so most of the day it was educational programming, but after 10pm and up until 2am on weekends we could play rock. i did the Sunday afteroon opera broadcast and had the Saturday night midnight - 2am shift, but using an extended logoff, i sometimes stretched it until 2:30 or so. not sure how much i violated regs, but the station never heard about it from the FCC. the station was very weak in their vinyl collection, so most of the tunes we played were albums we brought in ourselves. if you ever watched WKRP in Cincinnati, our broadcast booth was very similar (...maybe except for Venus Flytrap's gong).

somewhere around i still have a tape of one of the specials we did... if i can ever find a 10" reel-2-reel tape deck. i think i can still remember some of the PSA's, especially the text ones we could actually read.

WCLH... Wilkes College Listening Habit... (*groan*), though now it's Wilkes University, so i'm not sure what they did about that.
