roasted some pumpkin seeds today...

pumpkin seeds.jpg

recipes i saw were mostly butter based, but the quantity varied quite a bit. i averaged it out, but still think i will dial it down a tad next time. this was only about 1/3 of the seeds i have on hand. turned out crispy enough that i have been eating shell and all. quite filling. definitely going to be getting my %DV of zinc for a while.

well, this doesn't seem very fair... it takes seven being good days to reset one bad day?

kinda makes me wonder about reading statements like "...but on the weekends, i ditch the diet and cheat a little". followed by.... "i've tried this diet for months now and don't seem to be making any progress".

I've always found the shells either too tough or too scratchy. I'm sure they'd be filling, if I could choke them down! :)
this time was a bit experimental, but next round i will write down times/ temps. generally i put the oven on roast at 200° for ~40-45 minutes and then cranked it up to 325° for the last 15 minutes. they are VERY crispy/ crunchy.

my aunt used to work at a large department store and one thing i remember her telling me is that when something goes on sale, if you bought that item a certain number of days before the sale, the store should honor the sale price retroactively either with store credit or an out and out refund of the difference. i won't tell you how she said the employees used to use this "insider" information :), but i tried this with an online retailer today and it worked. nice to know there are still some reputable stores, even including cyberstores, out there and if you didn't know about this, bottom line... it never hurts to ask.

got weighed at the doc's office today.... 77kg ... *whew* just ducked under 170 lbs. fully dressed and no height check like the other day, so i didn't get to kick my shoes off. we had a good talk about my weight loss. the good news is that he seemed interested in intermittent fasting and it certainly didn't hurt to show him my success with it. he mentioned that IF is being looked at, but gave me the old "it may not work for everyone" line. i guess i don't disagree, but i think i got him to at least see one example that it's not just another fad diet.

the old brain was at work today when it took me a while to figure out why Ralph's was so packed with food shoppers on a Tuesday afternoon.

i wound up getting a 3 lb version for $15, but i just had to document the most expensive (list price) slab of meat i've ever seen...

sadly not a sweet pumpkin to be found... oh well, it was a good run.

a separate piece ... with apologies to John Knowles... :)

if you didn't know about the 2 part story of eggs, here is a side-by-side...

egg nutrition.jpg

eggs are a non-trivial part of my diet, but i usually use twice (or more) as many egg whites than yolks. up until now i've only known one way to separate an egg. here is Lindsay Ann with a few more ...

oh, we have mostly sunny days about 98% of the year, so i'm not going to complain about a few days of rain even on a holiday weekend and most importantly, ...i'm not traveling. one beef i have about SoCal drivers... very few seem to be able to handle even slightly inclement conditions.

i was around so much food yesterday i decided to try eating like a normal person for the day... i.e. whenever i was hungry. it changed my morning a bit. i often get a little hungry, but the morning hunger urges seem to pass by quickly. i tried eating a little, but i found i COULD only eat a little. had a half of a turkey sandwich (it was cold and damp Wednesday so the turkey got taken care of on Thanksgiving Eve). then i started binge watching The Expanse which i catch on a 24/7 streaming channel (vaughn.tv), so i really forgot about eating or drinking for a few hours (streams there have ZERO breaks).

in the afternoon i had the other half of that turkey sandwich... a toasted bagel w/ some vegetable cream cheese... a big bowl of green beans... and an apple with some Swiss cheese. roasted up another batch of pumpkin seeds and munched on them into the early evening. there was a leftover bagle pizza in there somewhere, too. in retrospect, not very much more quantity of food than a typical day... just not within an IF length eating window. maybe over 12-14 hours.

this morning my gut seemed a little upset, but that didn't last long. i think the worst thing was psychological. i still had a small hunger urge, but today i actually considered "maybe just one more day". i have a feeling that's how it starts. but i was successful in ignoring the urge and things seem to be back to normal. i cut up the rest of the green beans for later, had a cup of coffee and got started on some chores. still raining out there.

I hadn't heard of The Expanse, so I went to look it up after reading your post - sounds like a classic (Asimov-y? or more like Le Guin's Dispossessed?) mix of SF and spy thriller. Are there advanced non-humans in it (ie not just lichen)?

I hadn't heard of The Expanse, ...
The Expanse is an interesting Sci-Fi series in that it tries to predict the future of humanity. in the future, the Earth has colonized Mars and moved into the asteroid belt for the raw materials Earth has depleted. of course there is tension now between Earth (old school with big problems), Mars (more of a military rule, but as a united planet) and what are now called the "Belters"... those who now live on the micro-gravity conditions on Ceres. there is an alien element to the story, but i don't want to give that away. i believe it's still an active series.

normally i don't have a very difficult time naming photos (i can't name pets, i know that) but, "eating crow" seems too easy, and i'm having second thoughts about "carry-on dining"...

carrion dining small.jpg

pretty sure this is a red tailed hawk.
going by the disturbance in a nearby tree, the partially disassembled bird was a crow.
...if i'm not mistaken, touted as one of the most intelligent birds.

though now that i think of it... this would make an interesting "greeting card" with the caption...
"about that bet we made... anything you want say now?"

"Eating Crow" absolutely works.

You could try "Not while I'm Eating", but I still like the first.

The hawk looks cool, but the crow looks a bit gory...maybe photoshop out the red?
