10 days on the road and thinking about the happy hours i hit,
a nice surprise when i got home...

so the next time someone tells you, "I need to lose weight, but i'm not going to give up drinking beer". just nod your head and say, "ok, if you say so, but i know someone..."

and, no... i don't drink Coors Light or Michelob Ultra.
i can't understand why anyone would pay $3-4 for essentially a bottle of water... :)

after today's breakfast/ lunch, i'm pretty sure i'll be maxed out on Omega 3 fatty acids for the rest of the month....

this was round 2 of 3... or was it 4... :)

well that was an interesting week... really active for 3-4 days and then back to a normal routine (basically being semi-lazy... physically). after a month or so of not seeing my weight budge more than 2-3 lbs... this week it swung about 9 lbs. ... down then up again. i think i've figured out that if i keep a more relaxed lifestyle, i can maintain a BMI = 24.5 to 25, but if i decided to up my daily activity, i could probably drop down and maintain a 23 to 24 BMI easily. during those active days i even squeezed in an additional early meal. i knew i was going to be very active from the get-go those days and the place i was at had a free breakfast (!!) ... couldn't pass up bacon & eggs! ... but no evil OJ ... :)

looks like soup will be on the menu for a few days yet.

want to have some fun with friends? .... ask them if they know how much CO2 is in the air.

i suppose i should have added that Onami is a Sushi/ Sashimi buffet (with a senior discount!).

on the downside you have to put up with a paper v. porcelain soy sauce dish, but i'll give them a by on that one... :)

seems like i'm still seeing evidence of that really active week i had about a week ago now. i am seeing my old 173 now and then, but i have noticed that i'm dipping into the 160's a lot more times than i ever have and 175 is about the highest i've seen in a while. this is an old activity i recently restarted and it will be an every other week thing, weather (it will get into the high 90's pretty soon) permitting as the summer approaches. i must admit i've been physically lazy this past winter, and this will be the first summer at this new weight. sort of wondering where this might bottom out. have to add that i did enjoy the additional meal those days (though it won't be a free breakfast until the fall meet ... :(). i did realize i'd need the calories; i have no intention of getting extreme.

as a little experiment to support a response i made to a sugar addict's post, this evening i drove home from a short weekend away and before leaving the hotel (my eating window had ended about 6 hours previously), i took advantage of their 24 hour coffee availability, but also grabbed a single chocolate chip cookie. ...mmmmm. ... but let's see what happens next.

the drive was pretty easy and uneventful and i was back home in less than two hours.

so now it's 2am and for some reason my mind is on food. not craving anything in particular, but there is definitely an unusually strong urge to ... "why not just this one time". but i know the feeling... i can deal with it, because i know why it's there. having a cup of coffee right now and it is subsiding... slowly.

if you are intermittent fasting, small hunger pangs are not that rare, but the worst thing you can do is think, "well, just a little cheating will be ok". believe me, it's not worth it.

now about 3:30am and the hunger has pretty much subsided. as i said previously, small hunger pangs aren't very rare during a fasting time, but the typical one might last 5 minutes at the most. this feeling i got after that small sugar snack earlier lasted a good half hour to maybe 45 minutes.

I understand what you are saying about beer, Monty Python had a great skit
on American beer! I have given up beer for the next couple of weeks, will see how it goes after that.

I appreciated your post on my diary about the sugar in most packaged foods. I once knew a guy who was a food chemist at Frito Lay, he said the holy grail of his industry was to get as much fat and sugar into the product without it being too obvious to the consumer. We all have an instinctive attraction to high calorie foods, but our intellect tells us its not a great idea.

i think my point about beer is that i treat it as mostly carb calories and not as simply an adjunct to a meal. when i start the day with a few pints, it's not a beverage i have with breakfast... it IS breakfast. have to say, most of the time mornings like that are impromptu. like this morning when i drove to a butcher a few miles across town. no parking in the butcher's parking lot, but fortunately i found a spot just down the street...

... with 1/2 hour to kill on the parking meter, what was i to do?? ... :)

re: sugar... grocery stores aren't the only places under attack. if you don't think restaurant chef's know that a little sugar will equate to a happy customer who will return, ... think again. even more devious, do you really think restaurants are going to list added sugar as an ingredient on the menu description? ironically, the most dangerous menu items are typically the ones marked "Heart Healthy". low fat almost always translates to high added sugar.

one of my nerdy hobbies is collecting old toy trains.
sometimes i run into a cross collectible...

and pot... :)
...
is it sad that so much misinformation about marijuana is out there. being able to grow in CA now has been a real gift this past year. even being a rookie not knowing what i was doing, i have a sufficient amount (+ a bunch of seeds from the one hermie i let grow) that besides buying a bag of dirt occasionally, i should be self sustainable from now on.

it is beyond belief that many people around the country are in jail for a lot less than what i now occasionally drop on the floor. at least those misguided legislators are pretty much a dying breed... thank god.

My most recent experience with pot is now about 40 years past, but as I recall it gave me the munchies something awful and weakened any resolve I had not to eat. I can pretty clearly recall one diet ending with some pot followed by a case of Twinkies. How do you manage that? I live in Utah and recreational pot will probably be legalized here some time after he** freezes over, but we are only a 2 hr drive from Nevada. My wife has some chronic pain issues and has been told that pot might be helpful, so we are talking about it.

to put that in context, my 2018 inaugural harvest...

i never bothered weighing it, but that largest jar holds a liquid gallon. after 5 months of also giving some away (by CA law, you can give it away, you just cannot sell it), i'm barely into the second jar, so last weekend i decided to go all peppers this year. upped my 4 plants from last year adding a dozen more. last year i must have gotten about 3 dozen peppers off just the 4 plants... should be a great 2019 crop.

2018 peppers.jpg
got 2 new kinds this year, too.

back to the cannabis ... i'm of the camp that "the munchies" is not an actual physiological reaction but rather a conditioned response of expected behavior. has there ever been a pot-based movie or sitcom scene that has not taken advantage of this trope for a fleeting bit of humor? i find recreational pot useful in a few respects. it tends to slow down my (beer) drinking, and nutritionally it frankly has the opposite effect on me... while contemplating the meaning of life, i often forget to eat. in college i could get away with eating anything... i once remember driving back from playing lake hockey for the entire day and each of us had an entire large pizza. my BMI was probably in the 22-23 range throughout college from playing sports. can't really get away with that anymore.

still have a few pots to fill this summer... i was thinking about zucchini.

What's in the jars?

The peppers look great! I've planted sweet bell peppers from seeds this year.

wow... yesterday it seems like i couldn't stop eating and today i see this...

168.5 - 2018.05.30.jpg
go figure.

i do think i have been dropping weight, though. i thought i had leveled off at about 175... then in a few weeks i started seeing 173.5 more often... now about a month later, i'm in the upper 160's nearly every day. still seeing a few lbs of gut that would be nice to see disappear, so not that concerned. i'm sure i'll figure out my balance point sometime soon ... or not.

i don't normally calculate calories but thought i'd try to give it a shot on a few random days... how hard could it be... :)

i started eating about 12:30 today... after somewhere on the order of a 15-16 hour fasting window. i was going to go a bit longer since i ate so much yesterday, but that would just screw up tomorrow... and the next day, ... etc, etc.

so, breakfast...
3 chicken drumsticks... maybe 2.5... one looked a bit meager.
a good size bowl of strawberries to finish those off.
a really big bowl of steamed broccoli... butter and salt.
a small to med size Delicious apple.

my plan for dinner in 3-4 hours...
big bowl of chicken tortilla soup... some tortilla strips on top.
bacon (1/6 lb) & eggs (2 yolks, 3 whites) & a bagel, toasted plain...maybe a little butter.
some steamed zucchini and broccoli if i feel the need.

iced tea, black coffee, water... anytime.

no snacks in the house for a while... i went a little nuts for a few days a while back and i wanted to put a stop to that fast. maybe i do have an availability problem... still... drat.

well, that might have been a mistake... in retrospect i don't believe i'll try to predict a meal before i actually make something. i definitely ditched the vegetables at dinner and probably should have had half the soup of maybe just have made a smaller bacon & egg sandwich.

oh well... i have a Dr appt today and chores to get done, so at least i'll be active... probably just have one meal later in the afternoon today.
