Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Hi Kim & Risty,
I spent 3 hours yesterday washing away all the ash; it felt good to have everything clean again. The air is much better today, and I'm hopeful that by Saturday, I'll be able to do my usual 75 mile ride.

Risty, congrats on keeping up the losses! That's a lot more than I've done over the last month!

...he said nonchalantly!
Incredible! Amazing!
Oooh ouch sorry about that elbow--what the hell is going on with that thing, anyhow? And great HIIT, I was trying to do that yesterday with running sprints and man oh man fartlek is uncomfortable. But that's the point, right? Have a great Thursday!

fartlek is uncomfortable.

You mean you don't feel relieved afterward?

I think I have "tennis elbow" even though I don't play tennis. The ice packs seem to be helping, though.

I just found a site that has air quality numbers for San Diego. Everything along the coast is still in the "Unhealthy" range. rats!

Ahhh, I had no idea it was a real word, thought you guys just made it up in previous posts or something, LOL. I think it sounds more like how you described it Tom :p lol

Well I didn't work out yesterday -- but I'll do some fartlek today. Now that Val's a trainer in training, I guess I gotta use the proper term.

The air in the gym still isn't so hot. I was coughing on and off for 3 hours after my workout Wednesday. And you can still smell all the ash in the air. At least the particulate count has gone down from 150 ("Unhealthy for everyone") to 110 ("Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups").

I'm hoping maybe tomorrow I can go on a ride, but we'll see.

Oh i sure hope your able to ride soon, but of course air safety is a MUST, you don't want to end up sick and in the hospital from inhaling all that crap. OH NO!!!

You mentioned having tennis elbow and not playing tennis, my hubby got the same thing about two months ago, they told him it was from all the sports he does, he did some physical therapy for about two weeks, took some anti inflammatory meds and a light pain killer and after a couple months it's A OKAY!! He says he's just getting old and well, he will have to deal with it. LOL LOL It does hurt I know that, hope yours goes away soon too!!

Hugs!
Kim

You can still use the term HIIT!! LOL! I use Fartlek because it's more commonly used in reference to running, and my running book uses it instead of HIIT. Besides, it's funnier ;) Ewww sorry about the air. I have a "thing" about clean air because I used to have asthma. Well, I think I still sort of do, in races I'm always panting harder than everyone around me, and sometimes I wheeze. But you must really be wheezing, eh? How is Marlene lately? I haven't heard about her.

Well, I couldn't stand staying inside anymore. The air quality today was "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" -- in other words, those with asthma, old people, people with heart conditions, etc. I didn't think I fell into any of those categories.

I had a nice relatively short ride along the coast, slightly under 2 hours, 34 miles. It was beautiful outside. No smell of smoke by the ocean, except a tiny bit in Del Mar. I'm glad I got out -- I really needed it. I haven't been able to ride outside since last Saturday, when I did my century.

I've been icing my arm 3 times a day. Kim -- what you said about your husband gives me hope. I'll just take it easy with this arm until it's better. In the meantime, it's fartlek on the bike!

Hi Tom! I remember you saying you were going to spend less time here too. :)

And I'm glad you are okay after the fires. And that you are nearly over the giant work project.

I hope that elbow is starting to improve. There are some problems that rest and time really do help with. You can feel like an injury is bringing you up short every hour at first and it's dragging on and then one day you realize that you haven't even thought about it for a few days! I hope that day will not be too long away. It's great that you are still getting so much out of your bike riding though (now that you can breathe outside again ).

Sometimes it seems like it's impossible not to be sidelined a little bit by c o o c, and there's a frustrating aspect to that - but then it is good to know that you're able to survive increasingly big bumps and still substantially stay with your lifestyle changes. It gives you a sense of how solid they really are I think and that's great.

Hi Felici & Val,
The elbow is still putting me on the sidelines as far as weight lifting goes. But at least today I was able to start biking again. The air cleared up, and I had a nice 38 mile ride in slightly less than 2 hours. The air was great, and it was a real joy to get out again.

The week off put a pound back on me. Yes, I'm up to 223 now -- uggh. But I'm confident that as I get back into riding, I'll get that back down again.
