Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

I think those bigger tires are a good idea! I'm sure that will help, and you will have less flats. WOW a trip to Scotland, OH MY that would be so much fun!! I sure hope you get to do that some day! Can you stow me away in a BIG BAG or something. What are you doing for cardio while your bikes in the shop?

But you don't like Scotch! And what would your hubby say? :D

I'm agreeing with the other comments about the Labor Day ride (which BTW I think you got!!)

Good luck with the new tires.

Scotland is very pretty, and a million years ago when I was there they had a heap of teeny skinny roads that would better fit a bike than a car - but remember to pack your wet weather gear in that BIG BAG along with Kim.

Uggh. Not a big fan of rain. Although the idea of sitting in a warm room tasting single malt, while it's raining outside, has a lot of appeal.

===================================
Weight today: 221.4 -- glad I'm staying around the 221 range. It will be a real thrill to get into the teens finally.

Took my bike to the shop yesterday. It turned out 4 spokes were broken in the rear wheel. While my bike is first rate overall, the spokes in the rear wheel are made in China, so I'm not to confident about their quality. Anyway, they're going to completely rebuild the wheel with brand new spokes and a 1.5 inch tire. They're going to fix the disc brake for free.

They were amazed I had put on 1,500 miles since I bought it on June 23rd.

Tomorrow I have to use the car to go down to Chula Vista, so I'll pick up the bike on the way back. That means Friday will be my first workout since last Monday. Actually, though, a few days off isn't such a bad thing. I think I've had about 3 months straight with no break, so it was due.

My hubby would probably pack me in there,LOL LOL Please TAKE HER, TAKE HER I need a break. LOL LMAO!!!!!!!!!!! Nah, we should certainly take them along with us. The girls can shop, and the guys can have their scotch at the local pubs. Or hell, we can all go to the local pub, then go shopping. LOL LOL believe it or not, I'm not a shopping kind of girl, unless it's little gifty shops, then I'm all for it!:rotflmao: I would be spending way to much time exploring, I would more than likely end up lost. LOL LOL Then I would pull a hissy fit, because I wouldn't want to leave. LOL LOL LMAO!! :rotflmao::rotflmao:

I'm the quintessential anti-shopper. The second I enter a mall, my eyes glaze over, and I feel all my energy being sucked out. One of the reasons I've been married so long is that my wife doesn't make me go shopping. :D

AMEN!!! all my friends are huge shoppers, they just laugh at me, because I'll pass up the mall over a walk at the park, or gardening ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Now, if there is a 75% mark down/clearance or close out going on, I'm your girl. LOL LOL I sound like a tightwad, but honestly, I just like to say I got a good deal on something, because I rarely do. This is funny, I buy sale or mark down for myself, but I go to all those expensive tique shops to buy my friends and family gifts, why do I do that??? :rotflmao::rofl: Does that mean I don't think I'm worthy of spending money on myself. I need to get a reality overhall!!! Or maybe, I'm buying to many gifts and therefore, haven't enough money left when it's time for myself. LOL LOL Oh yeah, this is your diary, I thought I was in my own. hehehehehehe

Hey Tom,

Sorry to hear about your bike problems--sounds like you will have a better wheel when its done though! Hope you are having a good day!

Kim, you can talk about shopping all you want in my journal, but good luck getting me to say anything at all about it. My idea of a good shopping experience is one that lasts no more than 15 or 20 seconds tops.

Thanks for dropping by, Beth.

Well, I got my bike back today, and of course I had to try it out. They replaced the skinny 1" rear tire with a 1.5" sturdier wheel, and replaced all the spokes with new ones. I took it 32 miles this afternoon, and I think this may solve my problem. It was great to be on the bike again, even though there were some pretty fierce winds coming out of the west.

Tomorrow morning I'll take it out again for 33 miles or so, and really try to put it through its paces.

I noticed my legs felt a lot stronger today -- I guess the 3 days off did them some good.

Yes, I would think you should take breaks like that regularly. I read recently that excessive nonweight bearing activities can actually decrease muscle mass (or was it bone mass?). Something like that. But it does sound like fun, if not grueling.

I'm bad at going to movies, any chance you could summarize the point of the documentary or is that impossible? If so, I'm in agreement anyway..I just know it (can we say "Halliburton" "dollars" "oil"?).

Hope all is well with you.

Blancita,
Here's an exerpt from Roger Ebert's review:

Remember the scene in "A Clockwork Orange" where Alex has his eyes clamped open and is forced to watch a movie? I imagine a similar experience for the architects of our catastrophe in Iraq. I would like them to see "No End in Sight," the story of how we were led into that war, and more than 3,000 American lives and hundreds of thousands of other lives were destroyed.

They might find the film of particular interest because they would know so many of the people appearing in it. This is not a documentary filled with anti-war activists or sitting ducks for Michael Moore. Most of the people in the film were important to the Bush administration. They had top government or military jobs, they had responsibility in Iraq or Washington, they implemented policy, they filed reports, they labored faithfully in service of U.S. foreign policy and then they left the government. Some jumped, some were pushed. They all feel disillusioned about the war and the way the White House refused to listen to them about it.

The subjects in this film now feel that American policy in Iraq was flawed from the start, that obvious measures were not taken, that sane advice was disregarded, that lies were told and believed, and that advice from people on the ground was overruled by a cabal of neo-con goofballs who seemed to form a wall around the president.

The president and his inner circle knew, just knew, for example, that Saddam had or would have weapons of mass destruction, that he was in league with al-Qaida and bin Laden, and that in some way, it was all hooked up with Sept. 11. Not all of the advice in the world could penetrate their obsession, and they fired the bearers of bad news.

well, this morning I actually hit 220.8, my lowest reading so far. Just a blip, I know, but a welcome one nevertheless.

Took my repaired bike out for a nice ride this morning - 35.4 miles. I went at a fairly good clip in the first hour, trying to make the elusive 20 mph average, but all I could muster was 19.6 mph. Of course, waiting about 8 minutes at traffic lights didn't help my average!

I burned around 1,600 calories in just under 2 hours - so no problem eating my left over spaghetti and meatballs for lunch.

Even though I detest BMI as a measurement, I did take note of the fact that my BMI today was 29.9 -- no longer in the "obese" category. This morning, at least for one day, I am in the BMI "overweight" category - one that I have no intention of getting out of. Even when I'm at 195 lbs. and 14% bodyfat, I'll still be in the BMI overweight category.

I note that more companies are starting to charge their employees extra for being overweight, and you can bet this is based on BMI. I don't think my company would ever do that, but I would be really pissed to be charged extra for being "overweight" when I am healthier than 95% of the population.

WOW 220lb, see your just melting away right in front of our eyes, it's so nice to see!! I think your legs needed that rest, so maybe it all happend for a reason right?? Good to see your up and going again!! Enjoy your weekend!! Mr. 220 :eek2:
Kim

Thanks, David & Kim. LOL, I'm not at 220 yet! But I can see "the light at the end of the tunnel, as they say." Tomorrow will be another 35 to 40 mile ride, and then my legs will get a rest again. Next week, I plan to resume my weight lifting routine as well.

Wow, 220.8 is not a blip and a *new low* is a *new low*!

Thanks for posting the review, of course I'm in total agreement so I dont even need to see the film :). I'm sure H will have me watching it if it ever comes out on cable (he's not at all into politics but for some reason he loves these expose type of political documentaries).

I've never heard of this charging for being overweight. Who does that and what does one get charged for? A higher portion of the health insurance premium?

Blancita -- I just read an article about it yesterday, I think in the NY Times. Basically, companies are charging their overweight employees a higher co-pay. Of course, they're not charging their employees who are "normal" weight, but don't work out, any extra premium.

Steve - How about I give you 20 of my pounds! :D

Haha, b/c you are my friend, I'd take them.

With my age-advantage, I think I could shed them faster than you. :)

those 1" skinny tyres shouldnt be getting pinch flats - they should be about 100-120psi at least and rock hard.
Perhaps you need to look at the kevlar belted ones. They are fairly common and not overly pricey, but worth their weight in gold.

Keep up the good work though Tom, wow at your pics :)
i think we are about the same bodyfat % atm round about

Hi Wishes. I think there was just too much weight on the back tire. My bike weighs around 30 lbs. Add to that 220 lbs. from me, and another 15 lbs. from my back bag, and there's 265 lbs. I always kept both tires at 100 to 105 psi.

I think the 1.5 inch tires will do the trick though. They're much sturdier, and on top of that, I had all new spokes put in, stronger stainless steel ones.

Body fat -- probably so, but 25% is great for a woman, not so good for a man. I've still got quite a ways to go, although 25 lbs. is a lot less daunting than 75, that's for sure!

Have a great weekend!

oh nah i still have some to go. Id like to get to 20% if i can.

Still tossing up if i want to do body building/weights seriously or not. I think for now i enjoy doing it as a hobby and looking good and being strong, i love the look it gives :D
You should see my back and arm muscles these days ... unfortunatly it means i look a little masculine compared to other females, but ive always had big shoulders and looked that way somewhat anyway :)

I just want to loose a little more fat from the belly, butt and thighs for now. I dont have any fat anywhere else :D
