Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Hi Felici and Val -- LOL, it does look like I got away with it. Of course I may not be so chipper by tomorrow afternoon. Today we went over the whole course by car -- it took us over 5 hours! There are some hellacious hills in Dana Point and Laguna Beach. I really don't know if I can make it, but I'll give it my best!

Tom, you crack me up!!! Your right about the GOM, I'm praying to her tonight. LOL LOL I also ate more calories today as several of the girls suggest I try out. I hope it doesn't back fire on me and put on a few pounds, that would put me in a state of 911. LMAO!! Oh and I see you dropped body fat again, YOUR THE MAN!!!!!! hope everything goes lovely for you tomorrow!! ENJOY YOUR DAY!!!!
~hugs~
Kim

Tom,
I have spent the last couple of days reading your journal. It is amazing to me that detail that you keep. It is also very inspirational with the hard work that you are putting into your body. If I am able to accomplish half of what you have done I will be amazed. Thank you for all that you have done to inspire me to do better!

Good luck on your ride tomorrow. I look forward to hearing how it went for you. Have a good evening.

David

 OMG 5 hours!! By car!!

I don't usually do this, but I'm hoping you were stuck in a traffic jam, or eating a 2 hour lunch or something in amongst that!

Today's the day huh. I hope you're having a blast!

I made it!

:eek2: :eek2: 111.7 miles, 7 hours and 55 minutes! :eek2: :eek2:

I averaged 14.1 miles per hour, which isn't too bad for an old fart like me.
According to my heart rate monitor, I burned 7,012 calories, but I'm only going to record the standard 40 calories per mile - 4,468 calories.

My max heart rate was 157 (93% of max), and my average heart rate was 128 (76% of max). I spent 9 1/2 minutes above 150 bpm.

The weather for the first 5 hours was great -- nice marine layer, and not above 65 degrees. Then it burned off, unfortunately, and the last two hours were hot as hell. I drank 8 bottles of water on the trip, each loaded with 2 scoops of carbo load. I also took 16 Thermolyte capsules, about 2 every hour. I think that why I never got one cramp. Even now, my legs feel OK. I'm tired, but I'm nowhere near collapsing.

The hills around Laguna Beach were the worst. The only place to go there is on the Pacific Coast Hwy, and the cars are zooming by you, while you're struggling to get up those big hills in a non-existent bike lane. I'm glad that part was at the half way mark, and not at the end.

Marlene brought me lunch at the 80 mile mark. I thought I'd be famished, so I told her to bring a big turkey sandwich, a fruit salad, and potato chips. I ate half the sandwich, the chips, a pickle slice, and half the fruit. I just couldn't eat any more after that. I ate standing up, and only spent 15 minutes doing it, because I didn't want my legs to tighten up.

The last few hills were the worst. I have one big hill I have to get up just before I get home, and I swear I wasn't sure I could make it. But I did, and I didn't have to walk up a single hill on the whole trip.

I don't mean to brag, but when I think that on July 1, 2006 -- just a little over a year ago -- I couldn't walk up more than a few flights of stairs without getting pooped, that does make me feel pretty good about my progress over the past year.

I think that's why I wanted to do this rather insane adventure. Sure, I'll have my lava cake and scotch on my birthday tomorrow, but what I'll really remember on this birthday was that I rode my bike almost 112 miles. And that's what the new me is all about. I know at 59, I'm a bit late in starting, but hell, better late than never.

I even had Marlene take a picture of me with my shirt off, and I promise to post it tomorrow. Now that's a first!

Kim, David, & Felici -- Thanks for all your well wishes, I really appreciate it.

Wooooooooo hooooo!!!

What an adventure!! 8 hours pumping those legs!!!

I am in awe.

Congratulations.

Congratulations

Tom,
Congratulations on your ride. It sounds like an amazing accomplishment. That is wonderful to think that a year ago you couldn't fathom doing what you just did. That is a great inspiration to me. Again, Congratulations.

Thanks, Felici, David, & Rachel.

Well, the Scale Gods certainly are a fickle bunch! Here I thought after yesterday I'd be down at least a pound, and instead, I'm up to 225.4 ! Oh well, at least I'm well below my goal for the month of 227.5, and I suspect the cause of the increase is a lot of salt I took in yesterday, during and after my ride.

I have no idea exactly what I took in calorie wise yesterday, to the stats have some guess-work in them:

Food: 5,000 calories (now, that's a whopping big number, but 2,000 calories of that is from supplements during the ride)
NARM: 2,288 c
Exercise: 4,468 c
Deficit for the Day: 1,756 c
Deficit for the July: 11,642 c

And, as promised, here are some pics.

The first one of me is from a little over 1 year ago. I weighed 270 lbs., took very few pics, and hid my weight fairly well, although you can see it a lot in my face.

The second was at the start of my ride yesterday.

The last was at the 80 mile mark. This is the first time I have voluntarily taken a photo with my shirt off! You can see I still have a long way to go, but I've made some progress over the past year.

Okay for starters YOUR A LIAR!! I called you Skinny one time and you said NO WAY!! YEAH RIGHT!! I knew you were not telling me the truth. YOU HAVE SOME NICE LEGS my friend, and DAMN>>>>>> look at those friggen stomach muscles. I'm just like, I knew you looked good, but you look even better than I thought you did. And WOW, I:eek2: I 'm being TOTALLY honest with you, I wouldn't make a comment about looks if I didn't think it was true! Who cares about that pound up, you'll lose that by tomorrow more than likely. GOOD JOB! I'm so proud of you!! OH and isn't it someone's BIRTHDAY TODAY??????????? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is lava cake in the mix?

Nice job on the ride - call yourself an old fart again and I will send you to the corner for a day or two... knock that crap off - you know youc an take fellas half your age... :D and proved it with 100+ miles...

there was an article in the recent issue of women's health magazine - about a century ride and one of thehard core riders stated that anyone who even attempts a century ride is badass.. so -- pat yourself on the behind for a job well done

Hi, Kim -- you certainly know how to make a guy feel good! No wonder your husband is so happy with you! Anyway, I really appreciate your wonderful comments. Skinny? LOLOLOLOL.

As for the stomach muscles, that is known in the trade as a "one-pack". :D

OMG, are you kidding me? You are hot and now I'm jealous of Marlene :D. To be honest, you carried your 270 really well but sheesh, the abs on you now. Are you sure those aren't painted on???? You are truly amazing Tom, thanks for keeping us all motivated.

Great pics Tom!! Really, wow. Check out the abs! You have a great base of musculature. The more you expose it, the better you are going to look.... very anxious to see where this path takes you!
