Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Since you're "laid back" on a recumbent, you can't push on the pedals the way you would on a regular bike. It seems cadence is the key to getting up hills. Lots of new muscles are brought into play. So far, though, it's all theoretical. I want to put it into practice!

have you spent a bunch of time test driving one of these? I see them in the park a bunch on the weekends and the riders just look so uncomfortable - the sitting is fine but it's the neck and shoulder muscles from trying to see where you're gooing that looks just awful after about 10 minutes --plus they really don't turn on a dime like aregular bike does...

No, I haven't spent a whole lot of time on them, but seeing where you're going is the strong point of "bents", as is the lack of back and neck pain. I can't ride a regular bike because of neck pain. No, they can't turn on a dime, but that's one thing I don't need anyway.

Hey Tom! Good luck on going car free! I love biking to work. I didn't yesterday because it was raining bad and I won't today because I had a really late night and barely slept. But come monday I'll be back to biking. It just feels so good though, feels like you accomplishing something! At least it does for me :D

Thanks, Risty. I can't bike to work, because "work" is 30 feet from the bedroom, but I will be using it all around town. :)

Morning Tom! I'm excited/curious to see what adding that bit of change in your normal activity (bike vs driving) does with your weight/bp. Should be interesting.

Funny about the protein. I was looking at mine yesterday going "huh" for a second or two---cause I always forget the combo of chicken/fish in one day is kinda protein heaven.

Have a great week-end! And let's both make this a WWCD couple of days...'cause she's going be trying to eat lots of fruits/veggies/lean meat/fish & walking past the cheesecake. LOL

oh come on where's your sense of adventure - maybe roller blades? or walk on your hands? make that walk to work more challenging...

LOL, the challenging part is not tripping over all my dog's toys, which he leaves all over the house! I guess I could get a unicycle for my "commute" to my home office. :)

Morning Tom! Just stopping in to see if you cut that plateau yet or not, uggg looks like it's hanging around like mine this time. How long now have you been at 233?? Maybe the biking will put a new jump start into your routine and you can lose those stubborn few pounds before the end of the month. Mine has been sitting at the same weight for about two weeks now, maybe a few days longer than that. But, I'm not worried, I'm still dropping a few inches here and there, is that happening for you also?

Hey, Kim, I'm on day 23 - not anywhere near my record of 36 days, but starting to get up there. My belt is getting looser, though! I only have an accumulated deficit of around 6500 calories in this Round, about half of what I need to break through it. Hopefully, I'll get there before the end of the month.

You're gonna love being out in all that fresh air pedalling along. Good morning.

Hey, Kelly, good morning to you, too! Yeah, I can't wait to ride!

YES!! I was hoping you were losing those inches as well. I feel your pain as I'm right there with you on the weight loss. But as CYM said in my post, it's much better to be smaller regardless of what weight you are. I agree on that! I better your looking mighty sweet these days! :)

I wouldn't say "sweet" yet, but not as un-sweet as I used to look!

My dear wife just got back from her doctor's appt. She's been snacking here and there the past 20 years, and now it's catching up with her. Her doc says she has to lose at least 20 lbs., or she'll have to go on blood pressure meds. So she told the doc she had a great coach - me.

I helped her figure out her NARM, and how much she needed to exercise, and got her started in FitDay. She was shocked to find that the butter she put on her toast this morning was higher in calories than her fried egg. She'll has a targeted deficit of 420 calories a day, which will put her at her goal just in time for Christmas this year.

While I hate to see her BP go up, I'm thankful she got a wake up call. We want to be healthy in our old age, and carrying around all this extra weight just isn't going to cut it.

That weight really sneaks up on ya and a couple of years ago, I had my BP register high and I was borderline hypertesnsive 135/90 and my dr. warned me about it...the last time I took it it was way lower than it had ever been. I think it was 108/75. I should check it again...that was a month or so ago.

Glad to hear your belt is looser! You are losing for sure! You have to be, Tom--you work out so hard !

Yeah, I think it scared Marlene into action. She has heart disease in the family, too. Today she worked out at the gym for over an hour!

I had a hard workout myself - Cardio coach Press Play:
View attachment 3721
75 minutes, 1,250 calories
Max HR: 158 (93% of max)
Avg HR: 138 (81% of max)

I kept the same resistance level and cadence I had when I did this workout a month ago. However, my max HR's were a bit lower, indicating that I'm in a bit better shape than I was then. When you get close to your 60's, just staying even is a victory!

I think doing all the exercise you're doing IS the victory.
I'm sorry about your wifes BP but I'm sure you two get it under control soon. And now you can share one more thing in your lives. :)
Have a great weekend, both of you! :D

Thanks, Julie. So far Marlene has been totally supportive in my goals, It's nice to be able to reciprocate.

Weight: 230.8 :) Sometimes when I work out especially hard the previous day, the scale gods send me a "teaser." I really think that's all this is. Still, it's nice to see this month's goal so close within reach for once.

I at a LOT yesterday - 3,390 calories.
Fat 143 gm, 38%; 36 gm saturated, 9%
Carbs: 324 gm, 35%; 41 gm fiber
Protein: 177 gm, 21%
Alcohol: 19 gm, 4%

The fat came from a large pork chop for dinner, and also from a spinach salad mix we bought at the store. It was one of those pre-made spinach salads, with all the ingredients, including blue cheese, candied walnuts, and dressing. One of those things where you look at it and say, "surely this is totally healthy." Then you take the nutrition panel and record it in FitDay, and ugghh! It turns out all those "goodies" and especially the dressing, turn it into a 665 calorie "side salad", with 54 grams of fat! Lesson learned.

Even with all that, I still ended the day with a 237 calorie deficit, with a NARM of 2,377 calories, plus 1,250 calories from my cardio. Imagine where I'd be without that cardio session!

Marlene worked her butt off at the gym yesterday. I really, really hope she's motivated. She's at the age where heart disease, especially since it's already in her family, is no longer an abstract reality. She wants to keep teaching until she drops, and I think she realizes that a stroke or a bad heart attack would put an end to that dream.

I am truly bummed about my bike not coming in for at least 2 more weeks. Recumbents are practically like custom made bikes. Now the Rans factory, which makes my model, is waiting on material to make the seats.

My daughter's coming in today for father's day. The best present a guy could have!

Good morning Tom!

Glad to hear that Marlene had a great workout yesterday! Yay for her! Tell her I am rooting for her! :) I think it is so much easier for both of Bruce and I, that we have the same fitness goals. And good news on the weight this morning! Hopefully this change in the scales will be "the real deal" ! I sure know what you mean about those salads....

I'm sorry to hear about the delay on getting your bike...we're waiting on our bike carrier to come so we can take our bikes to the shop to get tuned up and start riding. It should be here by the 20th....but it will probably be another week until the bikes are ready.

Have a good day and Happy Father's Day! :)

Thanks, Beth. Hopefully in July we'll be able to get together for that ride along the coast. Afterward, we could go to my place for a cool protein shake - and a margarita, LOL. :)

Tell Bruce happy father's day, too!

Did somone mention Margarita?? :D

Hey Tom.. just got back from the gym.. got my workout done early today. Felt pretty good to wake up with the weights. But, as a true blue retired Navy guy.. doing the honest waking up right now with a big ass cup of coffee!! :)

Have a great Father's Day and we'll definitely have to do those bike rides soon!

Bruce
