Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Hey! Good job on the exercise and the weight increase :D I love the feeling of doing something at a heavier weight or tougher resistance that I couldn't do before! It's awesome :D

My wife keeps on telling me, "You've messed with your body so long, it's just telling you, 'Are you sure? Do you really mean it this time?' And once you convince it, it'll drop a couple more pounds." Sometimes I feel like it's not MY body, you know? I feel like I'm still a long way off from controlling it -- like we have a dysfunctional relationship that's been injured by too many fights. Weird, I know.

Tom - As you set down that 200 POUNDS of weight it's your chance to say: RIGHT NOW, I am IN CHARGE! :)

Thanks Risty & JLynne - I do feel good after I get out of the gym. Whenever I don't feel like going in, I conjure up that feeling, and it motivates me.

I think Steve does about twice as much as I do. On the other hand, I don't see any other 58 year olds in the gym doing what I do, so I feel good about that.

Are you kidding?!?!?!

I have rarely seen 20 year olds in the gym doing what you do buddy. Most of us, (myself included) wished we had that kind of drive and ambition. I wish I could bottle it and give some to my mom. She has just turned 60 and is starting this journey all over again herself. I am going to keep trying to motivate her and keep her going. She thinks she is old already, but as you have proved time and time again, you are only as old as you allow yourself to be!

And 58 is still young anyways buddy, no reason you shouldnt be doing what you are doing and feeling great about it! China is certainly good for that! Here 58 is still a young man, wet behind the ears, finding his way. Luckily for you you are going to have more energy and a longer life expectancy than a lot of your peers. Kinf od annoys me though... All my young life EVERYONE always said "Bah, you are still young, just a boy, etc etc" Then I hit my 30's and I thought "Phew, not a whippersnapper anymore..." In China I will probably be a youngster till 70..... Ah well, been called worse..... A lot worse!
:D:D:D

Haha -- actually it didn't start that way. 6 months ago, I totally dragged myself to the gym. However, I'm very competitive at heart, so each time I went in , I tried to improve just a little bit. After a few months, it got me to where I am now.

Trouble is, improving now comes in VERY small increments -- 5 pounds at a time in weights, a few rpm faster on an interval. But the way we view aging here in the US is as a period of constant decline. So just staying even is a victory of sorts.

:eh: A smiley just for you, Sirant.

Incrementing 5 pounds at a time is great! Nothing wrong with that!! I know all about dragging myself too. Crappy feeling when you think you "have to" do something instead of wanting to. For me it was a sense of shame that prevented me from being more active. Here of course I would sweat like crazy and felt the eyes of China upon me. Even when I first started walking home I was very self conscious. But as I got fitter and faster, I started worrying about it less, to the point now I actually enjoy the stares and lingering looks... I take the same route home everyday, so those same shop keepers and security guards who used to "Waaah!!" me and giggle as I walked/jogged by now see my coming and cheer, give me thumbs ups and pat my back as I run by. I don't know who they are and they don't know me, but they certainly respond differently to seeing me now. That in itself gives me more drive to push forward.... By summer I expect they will not only be impressed but will begin to wonder if it is the same guy.

And I agree with the general viewpoint about aging in America. Its sad really. Here retirement means freedom and time to start enjoying life. In america it means one foot in the grave for most. Thankfully not you though. And when we do meet, I expect we will go for a good long hike or gym session before we sit down to sacrifice some beer and buffalo to the scale gods.... You can show me just how young you really are... You whippersnapper you!

(sorry buddy, but I always wanted to call someone that!)

Now, THAT is a sight I'd love to see. :beerchug:

You got it buddy!

its kinda cool really. As much as people may stare at you for being a "big guy" here, they do totally respect and admire those of us who are making a difference. They do have a general conception that westerners are lazy and fat here, so to see one getting skinny to them is like seeing a movie star!
Sure helps to keep me moving.

And when I make my millions off the Beer, Ice cream and Running weight loss program I will invite you and the wife to China! Then you can see it, the sauna and the hot pot first hand!!!

Hey TomO... just dropping by. Sounds like you're doing well and keeping your spirits up. :) Congrats on the deadlift success.

Weight: 236.8 - Plateau #3, Day 25. Accumulated calorie deficit for this plateau - 10,222.

I was so tired from my workout that I went to bed at 9:30 last night. I fell asleep instantly, and woke up at 4 am. Sometimes you don't realize how taxing weight training can be.

I ate/drank 2,700 calories yesterday. With a NARM of 2,364 calories, plus 691 calories from weight training, plus 150 calories from gardening, I ended up with a 505 calorie deficit for the day.

Plateaus are not so bad when you don't have hunger pangs. When you do, and you resist them, and the scale still doesn't move -- that takes its toll on your psyche. All I can do for now is be satisfied that I'm meeting my other goals. I'm especially happy that I'm still making gains in strength training. I know they'll end some day, but progress there is good to see.

My daughter's coming down this weekend for Mother's Day. We plan to go on that long hike we didn't do last time. She's been doing the Cardio Coach workouts, as well as the weight training, and loves it. She tends to freak out at every little fluctuation on the scale, like most young women, no matter how much I assure her she looks perfect. We're going to have a great time, and I can't wait.

Mother's Day will be a challenge. It's one of those family events at an all-you-can-eat buffet, where the food is plentiful and greasy. While it will be great to see everyone in our extended family (about 20 people), I wish I could avoid that buffet somehow. But I can't, so I'll just take it as another challenge.

Me :boxing: plateau, round 3.

Sirant, I think it's time that you auditioned for American Idol. It's become a total bore, and they need a ukulele star like you to spice things up. You could audition with the WLF theme song, and I think you'd be a shoe-in.

And we will definitely take you up on that invite! Actually, we have about 300,000 frequent flyer miles we haven't used. Maybe we'll use them next year for some tickets to China!

Hey TomO... just dropping by. Sounds like you're doing well and keeping your spirits up. :) Congrats on the deadlift success.

Thanks, Sprite. My spirits and optimism are still high. Now, if I reach day 37, it might be a different story!

Nice lifting Tom. There are plenty of guys doing partial squats using the same weight as you. Not many doing full squats. Young or old.

Be proud.

I am wondering if you dropped your average caloric intake to 10 cals per pound, if your plateaus would be as frequent. Just a thought. If I were in your shoes, with the mind-frame that you have regarding plateaus (a good one), I probably wouldn't change anything at this point. Just thinking out-loud.

I think I mentioned this to you before too.

Thanks, Steve. I was comparing myself to this chart:

which was in a recent TNation article. Now, I know this is silly on one level, because I should only be comparing myself to myself. It's probably silly on another level, because charts like this aren't age adjusted at all. It's inconceivable to me that the standards would be the same for a 60 year old as for a 30 year old.

Don't worry, though, I am proud of the progress I'm making. :rotflmao:

10 calories per pound -- that's exactly where I'm at now. In fact, I raised it this month, from 9.7 calories. The scale had me fooled into thinking plateaus were a thing of the past, so I thought my setting was a bit too low. Irrational Exuberance strikes again.

I honestly don't think I should change anything just yet. The last two plateaus lasted 33 days and 36 days respectively, and didn't move until I had built up a deficit of 12,000 calories. There's no reason to suspect this one is any different.

actually it makes me feel pathetic - kind of like those charts that say i should weight 120lbs - makes me want to give up right now because it's just not gonna happen in my lifetime..

Yesterday you were around 11 calories per pound. No? I may have miscalced at my last glance.

And don't worry, I am not pressing for a change. I really was thinking out-loud.

Oh, I see what you mean now - don't EAT more than 10 calories a pound. Yeah, I probably need to do that. I'll try to start keeping within 2,360 calories a day. I have been going over that a bit - last 14 days have averaged 2,650 calories, as a matter of fact.

Yea, I would shoot for 10.

Oh yeah, I hear ya...we stay away from those buffet deals... Just stick to the fresh fruit, salads and lean meat or shrimp! How great though that you will see so much of your family and your daughter is here! I think we are bbqing at our house. Get the kids and family over....will be a nice day!
