Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Hey, everyone - thanks for dropping by my journal.
My &#^#% computer crapped out last night, so I'm typing this as fast as I can on a "borrowed" computer, and won't be able to get back on until probably tomorrow.

Anyway, I stepped on the scale this morning, and whoa!

239.0

Now, I think I know what's really going on here. My body, at the beginning of a new plateau, "teases" me with the weight that I can get to, if I just apply enough momentum. Last plateau, it went down from 245 to 242 on a couple of days, right at the beginning of the plateau, and then went right back up to 245 for the next 4 weeks. Back then, I found that to be an endless source of irritation.

But this time I'm hip to what's going on. This is a glimpse of where I can get to by the end of next month. All I need is to build up the momentum, and the weight will come off. It appears in my case, this is around a 10,000 calorie deficit.

Anyway, I just wanted to share the good news, and thank you all for your encouragement and support.

Great News!

I know how you feel (a little bit). My weight drops at a certain point, then shoots up and stays there for a little over a week, then drop down again each month. Sorry that your plateaus are so long....keep it up! (or down)

Hey Tom...guess you are still having computer issues...just wanted to drop by and say hi and hope you are having a great day otherwise!

I dropped two pounds, so I am officially off my plateau! yippee!

I hope your computer is feeling better soon Tom. Broken computers are pretty much the suckiest thing around.

Congratulations on 239! That is a three pound loss isn't it? That would work out to about 10,000 calories. That is fabulous and you are now in the 230s! How many months have you been at this? You just never know what your body is going to do. That's fabulous.

"Of this long and difficult road, do we wish to travel it?" (Archery)

Will be glad when you get your computer up and running again. Its crazy how much we rely on them. See you soon.

Thanks everyone for dropping by -- sorry I haven't been able to reciprocate, but my computer is totally hosed

While I do have backups of everything, I have to reinstall the entire operating system and all the programs -- about a 2 day chore, and one that I detest. ARGGHH!

Well, at least the scale is still being nice to me! This morning, I weighed in at 239.8. I sure can't complain about that! I still think my body's teasing me, but even if it jumps back up to 242, I'll be a VERY happy camper.

Because of all the computer problems, I have to cancel my trip to San Francisco to see my son, and put it off until this summer. Major bummer! So I've decided to take my week off from exercising, starting yesterday. I've been going to the gym 6 days a week for 3 months solid now, so I'm overdue for a break. Steve has drilled into us all the importance of managing the fatigue factor, and I'm a convert.

It's going to be very weird not going to the gym, that's for sure. I'm at the point now when I actually get a bit antsy NOT going -- that's how much things have changed in six months.

I plan to spend the week off eating fairly carefully -- exactly at maintenance, or around 2,400 calories a day. No loss, no gain, but lots of rest -- that will actually put me ahead, I think.

I'm on the very last hole in my belt now. :D Another couple of inches, and I'll actually have to buy a new belt. That would be a nice birthday present for me in July.

OK, hopefully I'll have my *#&^#^%#& computer at least hooked up to the internet by tomorrow. Thanks to all of you for stopping by and saying hi.

you take your week and enjoy it!

and enjoy your belt, because it's almost seen its last days! :D

i know how you feel about the computer... all this time i have been having to bum my friend's, because mine was getting fixed. it totally sucks! i finally got it back, but it's a completely blank slate! and no, i'm not smart enough to back up! :p

anywho, just saying hello! :D

having backups is more than a lot of people have so congratulate yourself for that :)

formatting a drive is so therapeutic and the computer will thank you for it.. :)

Good one on the scales Tom.

I'm really sorry to hear you are missing your trip.

I bet you do get antsy taking a break from the gym! Good luck with that!!

Daise, Mal, & Felici -- thanks for dropping by and your encouragement. I'm about 50% of the way rebuilding my system, so I'm still not very functional, but at least I don't have to go to the internet cafe to post!

First, the scale, which is either being really nice to me, or really teasing me badly: 239.2. Any second now, I expect it to pop back up to 242, which would still make me happy, because that was my goal for the month, but I'm loving this while I still can.

So, after talking it over with my son, who had already sold his furniture to make way for the new stuff we were going to build, we decided we'd be going to see him anyway. That means I'll be taking about 10 days off from exercise -- a bit more than I had planned -- but I'll be doing a whole lot of physical labor while I'm there -- cutting wood, hauling it, sanding, painting, and so forth. On top of that, Marlene will be preparing healthy meals for us at his house, so I should be pretty much able to maintiain a daily intake of around 2,500 calories.

I haven't had access to my FitDay logs (they're safe, though), so I'm not sure about exact calories the last couple of days. Yesterday was fairly typical. Oatmeal with fresh fruit and nuts for breakfast, seafood salad for lunch, and lemon grass beef wrapped in lettuce, with 1/2 cup of pasta for dinner. I figure that was right around the 2500 mark.

It felt really weird not going to the gym yesterday. Technically I should have, because we decided to go to SF anyway, but I was just too damned busy with the computer problems. And today I won't have a chance to either, so I'll just get used to the idea of 10 days without going to the gym. I better not get TOO used to it!

Tell me how not going to the gym feels. I'm supposed to take a break after 8 weeks, that's about 4 weeks from now and I'm not sure if I can do that. I love my lifting days and I would feel ill not going.

Anyhow have a great trip and with all that work, I'm sure you're gonna need a new belt by the time you head home...:D

It feels very weird! If you would have told me 6 months ago that I would get antsy and a bit irritable not going to the gym, I would have laughed at you, since going to the gym was what made me that way. But now it's reversed. On top of that, I was making really great progress with my cardio and lifting program, and it's hard to put that aside.

Steve has convinced me this is a good idea though, and I've read about it in other articles. Like Steve says, sometimes you gotta take a step backward to take two forward.

That is a very good attitude to have :):):) Hope you have a good day :D:D:D

I just made a post to you in Steve's diary. Got confused for a second. Glad your computer is getting back to normal. A well deserved break from the gym.
And your weight is NOT going to go back to 242, why would it unless you ate 3500 calories over maintenance three days in a row.

Yeah, I saw it -- Steve won't mind.

As to 242 -- you don't know my body! It like to taunt me like this. But I'm OK with 242. As long as I don't come back from my vacation at 245, I'm a happy camper.

It's not your body...it's those clever scales...evil machines.... :D
