Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Hey Tom, just catching up.

Sweet bike man. I've been doing a lot of riding myself. And look at your weight, geez!

If you are planning on doing a lot of riding, I'd drop some of the steady state cardio. You don't want to over do it, but let your body be your guide.

Hi Steve, yeah I expected to drop a bit -- but that's insane! Actually, I was going to replace my steady state cario all together with biking, and maybe even all my cardio for a while. I might go down to a single HIIT session a week for a while. It's hard to get back in the gym on an elliptical after working out outside.

12 days to go! I bet you guys are getting really excited. How many people are coming to the wedding?

I think this is a good idea.

Getting very excited. As of right now there are 160 guests coming.

It IS so nice to get outside when the weather is nice (which it probably always is out there in sunny Cali). I used to love riding and would love to get back into it but dont see that happening anytime soon since when I'm outside I've got a stroller chained to me now.

Hey Tom we want pictures soon. I have a huge skeleton, but you're right about my ideal weight so I want to see how it looks on somebody else lol.

In San Diego, we pay what is called the "sunshine tax." In other words, we have a very high cost of living, but wages that are about 20% under the national norm. But on a day like yesterday, it was worth paying that tax!

Pics will come next month, I promise! However, I won't be at my ideal weight, LOL. I'll only be half way there.

Tom I leave for a few days and you go and lose another few pounds, maybe I should take time off more often. :) Your doing amazing, your getting skinny my friend!! YEP I said skinny,! I love riding bikes, how fun for you! I ride every chance I can get, it's rained off and on here for almost the entire month of June, so not much riding going on in my neck of the woods. I didn't weigh in today, I'm waiting until next Monday, just in case. LOL LOL Well, I'm happy to be back and I'm more happy to know that you lost during that time too. GOOD JOB HANDSOME!:rotflmao:
Kim

Wow.

SIXTY FOUR effing miles!?!?!? no way!!!:eek2:

Wow.

Ok! Speechless....or type-less....whatever!!

All right you badass you.
Interestingly enough this coincides with me deciding to do the SC Sentinel Triathlon in September (not really long, top females in my age finished in 2 1/2 hours). Part of it includes biking to Davenport and back, and you reminded me to get tubes, putty, pump, etc. I haven't even written about it in my OWN diary yet, better do that!! :rotflmao:

Awwww. . . you're so sweet! But "skinny" -- LOLOLOL, that, my dear, will never describe ME. Even when I get to my target weight a year from now, I'll be a LONG way from skinny!

Wow.

That's great, Val. I bet you'll win over all the women and most of the men, maybe even all of them! Where do you do the swimming part? I can't imagine doing it in the ocean up there! BRRRR!

Thanks for the continued encouragement Tom.

I second Val's comment, I'm still in shock at the 64 miles. I used to do 30 when I was in my 20's and thought that was a big deal..ha ha..its all relative I guess.

All I can say is...Wow... I've always told myself secretly that when I hit "a certain age" I'd just let my body relax into being a fat old lady and lie around eating candy if it still wanted to....and then you go and ride 64 miles on top of everything else you do....darn it man, you've taken away my last excuse for future sloth!

LOL, you crack me up, cym.

It's amazing to think that a year ago I was more or less resigned to dying of a heart attack before I reached 60. Now I plan to go on a 100 mile ride before I'm 60.

Weight: 228.8 - LOL, I gained 2 pounds in one day! Of course, I lost 3 pounds in one day yesterday. The scale gods are freaking out. BUT -- and this is the main thing -- I'm still below 230.0, and that's exactly where I wanted to be. Everything else is just gravy.

Food yesterday came to 2,522 calories:
Fat: 76 gm, 27%; 15 gm saturated, 5%
Carbs: 296 gm, 43%; 40 gm fiber
Protein: 184 gm, 30%
Alcohol: 0

With my NARM of 2,354 calories, plus 722 calories from exercise, I ended the day with a deficit of 554 calories, and a month to date accumulated deficit of 9,323 calories.

Yesterday I did Weights 1 along with about 30 minutes of biking. I did NOT do the body calisthenics at the end - mainly because I didn't want to overdo it with the leg work after my long ride on Sunday. However, I did make some improvements on the bench press - up to 155 lbs., the Pendlay row - up to 135 lbs., and smaller gains on the rest of the exercises.

I sold our other car yesterday, so now the bike is my primary means of transportation. I did my first shopping trip on the bike - just eggs, milk, and some stuff for dinner. It worked out quite well. The milk was still cold when I got back home, and the pannier bags were plenty big enough to hold everything.

Great attitude Tom. When I was tracking my weight on my spreadsheet (which I just started again), I would always follow a new low with a 2 pound gain so I wouldn't sweat it either. Is your monthly deficit coinciding with your losses this time? Hope so! Congrats on getting rid of the car, that is a true experiment.

Hi Blancita. Well, for the month, if I stay at this weight, I'd be down 2.8 pounds. My monthly deficit so far is 9,323 calories, or the equivalent of 2.6 pounds. That means that I may be a hair too conservative on calculating my NARM, but not by very much at all. It's amazing how close the calculations actually are, once the daily fluctuations are all averaged out.

The car experiment - we get locked into a mindset of needing a car for everything. Of course, I wouldn't try this if I were in your shoes. This is something you couldn't do with a small child to care for. But in my situation, it makes a LOT of sense. We figure we're going to save about $4000 a year, just from insurance, repairs, and gas, and that includes renting a car for a couple of days a month, too.

My weight was also right on point with my deficit prior to my plateau. I'll restart it and let you know how accurate it is for me this time.

Actually in the city we have lots of access to public transportation and you can walk a block and have everything you need, but I still like having my car to get around on the weekends. It would just be great for the environment if more of us had your mindset.

LOL, I've always been a bit on the "nerdy" side that way. I bought a Honda Insight the second year they came out, long before anyone had ever heard of a Prius. It was really funny, because at the time I was volunteer teaching at a high school, and all the Hispanic kids thought it looked really cool - a new kind of low rider. Almost everyone else thought it looked strange, until gas prices started skyrocketing, and then for a year or so, I got stopped almost every day with questions.

Now I have a weird looking bike to go along with my weird looking car, LOL. All I need is glasses and a pocket protector. :D

these days, being nerdy is cool, no more pocket protectors and taped glasses - the nerdy boys are all cute and tend to get all the girls :) marlene better keep an eye on you :)

I couldn't imagine ever owning a car again... it's a wonderful feeling getting rid of it... and there are grocery store delivery services that are reasonable for big bulky stuff you don't want to cart home... :D

LOL, she's in NO danger! Anyway, once you get past 50, especially if you're overweight, you tend to be MUCH less "visible." It's been many years since anyone really "looked" at me. :)

Chicago is one of those cities where you absolutely can ditch the car. Great public transportation, and lots of services like you described. Southern CA is still very much a car culture, but it's also becoming more bike friendly.
