Weight: 230.8 - back down in the right direction.

Food intake was 2,547 calories yesterday:
83 gm fat, 29%; 24 gm saturated, 8%
262 gm carbs, 37%; 35 gm fiber
178 gm protein, 28%
25 gm alcohol, 7%

I burned 1,005 calories during cardio, and had a NARM of 2,348 calories, giving me a nice deficit for the day of 806 calories, and an accumulated deficit for the month of 5,775 calories.

I'm feeling good this morning after yesterday's workout. If my bike get all put together today, I'm thinking of riding it 24 miles from the bike shop to home. It's really too long to fit onto my car, so short of renting a truck, that's the only way I can get it back here. We'll see how it goes.

Tomorrow Marlene's going to Santa Barbara for a week to be with our niece for a week. She'll be on her own, but I know she'll do well with her nutrition and exercise. Her brother has an elliptical at home and there is a pool near by. And she's been totally committed to getting healthy again.

Juliette -- I'll try to remember to bring my camera a tripod, so I can get a few pics to show. This is what the bike looks like, though:

omg, sweet ass bike :)!

I think riding home is the best idea...the only thing is that its your first time riding it, and your body may not be conditioned enough for that sought of distance.

Then again, you know your body better then I do.

Well, I tried riding it home. I was about 12 miles into my ride, and I ran over a big pothole and bang! - my back tire blew out. Then I tried to change the tire, and realized that I had remembered to get everything, including a patch kit - except for an extra tube. It turned out my tube got destroyed by the pothole.

Marlene had to come rescue me. It was quite a sight, with my 93" long bike sticking out the back of our tiny Honda Insight, LOL.

Tonight, I just rode around on our block, trying to make better and better turns. This is really much different from a regular bike. You need a lot more "body English" to manoever, and the feeling is really different. Anyway, I made some progress tonight. Tomorrow I'll go on another long ride and things will be even better.

Wow! :D
Sorry about the tire.. But now you have your OWN TOY!!! :jump:

I think there's nothing quite so invigorating than have a new gadget and learn to master it... The bike looks great and will certainly be more interesting to ride around than a regular bike. Not to mention the interest of others.
Congratulations! I'm looking forward to a lot more good stories of your rides. ;)
Julie

oh no thats aweful about the tyre, lol hope you went nuts at the shop for leaving it pinched when they put it together :)

They are weird to get used too riding, but better for long haul rides in respects to sore backs etc .. you can ride them for hours and hours :)

Yeah, that certainly is a fun aspect of it! I think Marlene's a bit jealous. . . I keep telling her, I AM giving up a car for this!

Well, it really wasn't the shop's fault -- the tires came that way from the factory, and I think it was the pothole that did it, not anything else. After all, they worked just fine for the first 12 miles.

My legs were a bit sore, but my neck was in perfect shape, and my butt felt fine, too. An hour on a regular bike for the first time in 15 years (yes, that's how long it's been since I rode a bike) would have left me barely able to walk.

Weight: 229.6 - That's more like it!

Food yesterday came to 2,422 calories:
Fat: 129 gm, 48%; 39 gm saturated, 15%
Carbs: 161 gm, 25%; 23 gm fiber
Protein: 162 gm, 27%
Alcohol: 4 gm, 1%

Most of the fat and protein came from some pork loin we bbq'd for dinner. Oh well, at least I got my protein in.

I used up 800 calories in biking yesterday, and that plus my NARM of 2,350 calories gave me a deficit for the day of 728 calories and a month to date deficit of 6,504 calories. I'm running a bit behind last month, but still on track to make my weight goal.

I'm going to be doing the biking for cardio for a while. First of all, I really, really enjoy being outdoors. Second, I really, really need the practice. Last night I took the bike out on the street and just practiced doing figure 8's over and over again until I could make a turn half way decently. Balance-wise, you don't forget how to ride a bike. But this is quite different.

I noticed that even though my quads are in good shape from all the squatting and interval training I do, I still was very fatigued going up hills. It's my inner quads that gave out first, while my regular workouts seemed to have strengthened primarily my outer quads. Don't know if that makes any sense, but that's where the pain was last night.

I bought 2 extra spare tubes at the bike store, so I'm prepared for just about anything today!

That is just like Murphy's Law to pop up on your first ride home on the bike. You are such a trooper though Tom, you really motivate me to try harder.

Per your and other's suggestions, I've decided to start back with darn fitday. I keep forgetting about stuff I've eaten and frankly, I'M GETTING NOWHERE FAST.

Hi Blancita. I hope counting caories again works for you. If I'm not mistaken, you've slacked off a bit in your workouts -- or am I wrong about that?

Speaking of which, I got my first hour + of riding in already. MUCH better than yesterday! I was chugging right up most of the hills, and not looking like nearly as much of a doofus as yesterday. I had my HR monitor on -- very interesting. It says I burned 925 calories in 71 minutes -- that's better than I do with a steady state workout in the gym, and this is 50 times more fun!

Yayayayay!
I totally agree on the 50 times more fun. I just went for a 45 minute run and ENJOYED every second of it. Running uphill, running downhill, grinning like a madwoman out of sheer joy. That has something to do with improved physical condition as well. I def. didn't enjoy it half as much 3 months ago, at least not during the run.
But it beats the hell out of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, you name it, outdoors beats it..

Well, something tells me I don't need to worry about a deficit today. I rode my bike 64 miles today, and according to my HR monitor, I burned 3,397 calories. :) I just hope my legs don't cramp up into a little ball tonight. I'm going to take an extra vitamin pill, and I'm chugging down a double protein shake as I'm writing this.

My bike performed beautifully. I took it from Del Mar to the north end of Oceanside, and then back to Encinitas. I didn't really consider it a "grueling" ride, because it was a beautiful day and almost the entire route was along the ocean. I averaged about 15 miles an hour, and spent just over 4 hours. I was very happy that I was able to ride up the last long hill, even though my legs were starting to cramp up.

All in all, a great day!

Hi Tom! Just popped on for a few! Wow! way cool bike and I just about fainted when I read you rode 64 miles today! You have got this thing mastered for sure! GOOD JOB! I was trying to imagine riding on a bike like that and I could sure see how it would be so different from a regular bike. We have our carrier but are waiting for things to settle around here (with my daughter being here and the day she goes home, my son moves back in for 6 weeks...transition time around here...but fun having them with me for awhile! :)

When things do settle, drop me a PM, and we'll set up a date and time to take a coast ride together. I'll probably be doing a ride like that every Saturday, so you and Bruce can join me any time!

Ooooooooooooo, I wish I could join you too Tom! That is an awesome ride, I am truly humbled! Yes, I have slacked off on the exercise but I'm trying to get back into it. I just needed a break to see if I could start afresh and beat this plateau. I've probably gained about 1 or 2 pounds though, so not good. I'll be coming here to be put to shame .

Blancita, shame is not a part of this. Banish that thought! :)

I am suffering a severe case of bike envy, here.

LOL. I have a feeling I won't be quite so chipper tomorrow!

I like that bike Tom. It looks like it accounts for my two big issues with bike riding--my back and my buttocks.

Yes, it does the trick for me. Some people complain about "recumbutt" with these bikes, but aside from my quads starting to cramp up, I had no discomfort whatsoever in my back, butt, or neck.

Weight: 226.8. In yer face, scale gods & GOM, LOL. Of course, I know this won't last. It's all from yesterday, but it was amusing to see, that's for sure.

I ate more yesterday than I've eaten in a long time - 3,485 calories:
Fat: 111 gm, 28%; 43 gm saturated, 11%
Carbs: 440 gm, 48%; 54 gm fiber
Protein: 162 gm, 19%
Alcohol: 22 gm, 4%

Even with all that, I had a whopping deficit of 2,265 calories! It's easy to do, when your NARM of 2,353 calories, plus 3,397 calories from exercise come to a calorie expenditure for the day of 5,750 calories! :)

Amaxingly, I feel just fine today. Slept like a log. No leg cramps. I could even go on another ride today, but I'm going to get back on my weight training routine again, and do Weights 1.

I feel very good this morning, optimistic, energetic, full of hope.

Hey Tom, just catching up.

Sweet bike man. I've been doing a lot of riding myself. And look at your weight, geez!

If you are planning on doing a lot of riding, I'd drop some of the steady state cardio. You don't want to over do it, but let your body be your guide.
