Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Tom you are my go between for the G.O.M.:)

Do you have your hibachi grill? Do you have your sack of chicken wings? Do you have a scrubber on your bathroom vent, so the neighbors don't call the cops when they see all the smoke?

You can't just talk about making an offering to GOM idly, my friend. It takes some serious commitment!

Good morning Tom! I'm still sitting here in Plateauville too....sodium overload last night at dinner. We ate at Filippi's. :) I'm probably going to try the treadmill this morning after I take some Motrin.

Hope you are having a good day! :)

Hi Beth -- sorry about the plateau. At least if it's just sodium, it will disappear in a day or so. Have a great weekend.

Hey Tom, hope you're having a great week-end.....I'm not in a hotel in Atlanta despite by my best cajoling efforts all week, so I'm sitting home semi-pouting LOL. Great job on the bf% decrease, 2% is impressive - which is really where it's at anyway no matter what your fickle scale does or does not do.

About the "invisible" thing... I used to go out with my girlfriends and sit there trying to look cheerfully uncaring as one by one they got hit on all night and think "how can anyone this big be so invisible?" Very sad feeling.

Hey, cym. So sorry you didn't make it to Atlanta - bummer!

Part of the invisibility thing is age, too. We live in a society that pretty much exclusively honors young, beautiful people. Sad, but true.

Sometimes, I think we choose to be invisible, especially when we don't fit into to our own idea of what we should look like or be. It's the same reason I duck out of photos or am always behind the family videocamera. So, yes we are a society that honors the young, beautiful people. But maybe that's because those people aren't so afraid to see themselves in the spotlight.

....just a bit of philosophizing.....

Well, on my 59th birthday, I'm going to have my wife take some pics of me, so I won't be invisible any more!

i have to say - you dont look 59, or even close to it.
From the av i would have said 35-40ish, 45 at an absolute tops!

Whatever you're doing - keep it up! in fact bottle me some and post it :D

Hey, I think of people in their 40's as young! And people in their 20's, well, they're just kids. :)

That doesn't mean I won't listen to them though. I've had a number of 20 year olds teach me a lot more than people my age.

My 23 year old daughter refers to me as "ancient."

Tommy! What did I say about making me laugh! :rotflmao:

You are SO right, its all in the age of the beholder and its all relative.

That is heartbreaking to read. Did you all hear about that new law I think in MA that will make it illegal for employers to discriminate against people because of their size. The news said currently MI is the only state that has this law, which also includes height discrimination. Lots of people are against government regulation, but I think its a good thing as I do believe people are discriminated against because of their size in the workplace.

Morning Tommy boy!! How's my little work out stud doing this morning!!!:jump: Yeah I can call you that, you are one, you are the MOST DEDICATED work out person I've ever known. And I was reading back at all those posts about age and be invisible, Tom I can not see you as being one of those people who are not noticed, that just blows my mind. That's just my opinion of course!! You look superb for your age my friend!! Love the new avatar also. Has it been a few days since I stopped by or what, GUSH!!! I just can't keep up anymore!! Well, I hope you have a great rest of your weekend. I need to go catch up on some others. Take care friend!

Weight: 233.2 - Round 4, Day 10

This round will be over when I drop to 231 and stay there. So far, I've got 4,166 calories in my accumulated deficit, so I've got anywhere from 6,000 to 9,000 calories more to go to win it. Not a sweat to do that in the next 20 days.

Food yesterday was a bit on the heavy side at 2,834 calories:
Fat: 125 gm 39%; 43 gm saturated, 14%
Carbs: 270 gm, 35%; 40 gm fiber
Protein: 170 gm, 25%
Alcohol: 0

With my NARM of 2,333 calories, plus 465 calories from weight training, I ended the day with a 36 calorie surplus.

I was still pleased with myself, because it could have easily been an utter disaster. We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant last night. Typically, I would have eaten a half a basket of chips, drank a couple of margaritas, and then topped it all off with a 2,000 calorie combo dish. Instead, we told the server to take away the chips. I didn't have a drink, since I had my scotch yesterday. And then I ordered a very interesting dish called a mocajito -- strips of grilled beef in a tomato based sauce with cactus, jalapeno peppers, onions, and a small bit of cheese, served in a volcanic rock bowl. Excelente!! And only about 750 calories.

The culprit in my fat grams wasn't the beef; it was the cabbage salad with their dressing on it, for 24 gms. As for sat. fat, the two culprits were the beef, plus my weekly Newman dark chocolate bar, which has 11 gm of sat fat.

Still, what a difference between this meal and the meal I would have eaten there just 6 months ago!

LOL, thanks Wishes. I attribute this to a very low stress life style. 15 years ago, I was running a $140 million corporation, with over 120 employees. I worked 12 hours a day, and was on high blood pressure medication. I got out of the corporate rat race 12 years ago and started working from my home, and I think it made a huge difference. Of course, being with my wonderful wife for 33 years, and having two incredible kids is a big part of the equation, too. I have had a very lucky, blessed life.

That is heartbreaking to read. Did you all hear about that new law I think in MA that will make it illegal for employers to discriminate against people because of their size. The news said currently MI is the only state that has this law, which also includes height discrimination. Actually, I think what has to be fixed first is our health care system. A lot of employers discriminate against fat people because of insurance costs. I know, it's not a valid reason, because for that matter, you could make a case for discriminating against Indians because of a higher risk of diabetes, and blacks because of more risk for high bp. I'm just saying, that's the excuse they make. Since our health care system is a travesty anyway, getting universal health care in place would go a long way toward removing this as any sort of "legitimate" reason.

See! no jokes this time!

bows to the G.O.M. with his head down and walks backwards out of the room ----

You're getting it down, my friend. Now go out there and get them chicken wings! :rotflmao:

woohoo on that! I cannot wait til I begin to "materialize" as well. Here's to no more invisibility!

LOL, promise you won't laugh when you see them! My wife is going to go to the gym with me, and take photos of me as I'm doing my weight training. That ought to be interesting!

"Workout stud" -- you crack me up! :rotflmao: I'm not sure which is the real factor here, dedication or fear. But whatever it is, it keeps me going back to the gym for more punishment. Maybe I'm just a masochist! The avatar was taken from a crop of a family pic at mother's day this year. Glad you like it! Have a great weekend yourself!

Good job at the resturant :) once again, life style changes!

I'm curious, how did you find how much calories were in your meal? Did the company tell you when you asked them?

When i go out to eat, most people don't know how much food their calories contains, or I feel a little embarassed to ask, because I don't want to be a nuisance. Still, I know I should be concerned what I am putting in my body, but still, i need to get over some of this anxiety!

Sometimes I'm able to find a listing on one of the sites like calorieking.com or dietfacts.com. Sometimes restaurants have them online (Panera is excellent in this respect). And sometimes I have to make a mental note, or even jot down, all the ingredients. Then, when I'm at home with FitDay, I make up a custom meal and add the ingredients. I tend to be quite conservative, so that I don't underestimate the calories.

You should NOT be embarrassed to ask for nutritional information from ANY chain restaurant! If they had half a brain, they would make it available, and more people need to put pressure on them to do so. Family restaurants are another matter, of course.

A lot of restaurants that you think are just small operations are something else. For example, I thought that California Pizza Kitchen was just a local San Diego outfit. No, in fact they're owned by Kraft Foods. And the fact that they refuse to provide nutrional information is very bad, IMO.
