Finger-trap's Diary

Here goes nothing...

Age: 23
Weight: 275 lbs
Height: 5'6"

Long term target weight: 160 lbs

My problem is that I don't eat enough. I'm lucky to take in 1,000 calories a day. I can't seem to get comfortable with eating more than once a day. My pregnancy (6 years ago - GAH!) made me gain 75 lbs in 9 months because I was actually hungry enough to eat 3 meals a day.

Things that I specifically want to work on:

* Quitting caffeine. I get really bad migraines and the medicine I take is filled with caffeine so I've always been afraid of going under my daily "quota" because it means I'm more susceptible to them. I don't believe that a lack of caffeine is what causes them because they generally happen when I'm in the sun too long but I know the caffeine helps - especially in concentrated form, like in my medicine.

* Quitting smoking. I've gotten worse lately but still hover around 1 pack a day. I've been smoking since age 14 (off and on) and have actually developed a mild case of asthma because of it. I'm slapping myself on the wrist. No need for anyone else to do it for me. :)

* Eating more than once a day. I'm especially interested in how to pack as much nutrition as I can into each meal. I love fruits & veggies and eat them every day but I get full very quickly.

* Tougher exercise regimen. I have become a bit lax on exercise since last year (I hit a plateau and kind of gave up hope. I also quit my job and since the gym I used was at my job I was S.O.L.). Not unlike many people, I'm very self-conscious so I'm reluctant to exercise in a gym (can't afford it either) but there are some wonderful lakes that people walk around and I've been thinking of doing that every day before I go to work. My apartment complex has a gym but I haven't been in there yet to check it out.

I'm worried that, as I get older, it'll be harder to lose weight. I'm also worried that if I do lose weight when I'm older I'll have saggy skin. I'd like to lose the weight quickly but I'm trying to be realistic and not push myself into losing too much at a time. That being said, I haven't really figured out a time limit yet. I'm not sure how much people lose, on average, in a week or a month or a year.

And once my benefits kick in at my new job I intend to see a nutritionist of some sort to help me focus and try to find my own personal weight loss/nutrition/exercise system since my problem seems to be undereating.

So here goes with the diary. I promise to write down what I eat and how I exercise to try to understand all of this.

Hi fingers :) welcome to the forum and to your diary

its great that you made a decision to change the way you eat and mostly your life style. your body is probably slower in metabolism at the moment. i don't know if you checked out the stickies at the newcomers section. but if you didn't check it out. especially the one steve wrote. here's the link: http://weight-loss.fitness.com/newcomers/11548-rant-about-basic-concepts-i.html

how to start up your appetite. well since you love fruits and veggies eat small portions but try and eat something every few hours, it doesn't have to be lot. start small, and increase daily. but it would be best if you could go to a nutritionist and make a detailed plan.

its great to be focused, and i wish you all the luck in achieving your goal. you'll find lots of support here.

Hi and welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your decision to make a change. I also want to succeed at #2 but I haven't made that move yet. I am new too, I just joined Monday (I think) but so far I have no complaints. People are really supportive and helpful. It is awesome!

Whoops

Ok so I missed a few days.
I just finished working day 6 of 9 in a row so it's been all sleep and all work. Fun times.

Day 1 of the food diary:
1 package of (4) peanut butter crackers. - can't remember how many cals
1 soda - 160 cals
2 small pieces of chicken baked with hot sauce
1/2 c. mac & cheese
1/2 c. collard greens

No exercise. Haven't really been able to get into any sort of routine yet because my work & private life schedules are constantly changing. Hopefully soon. I mean, does sex count as exercise? :D

Day 2:
Strawberry yogurt granola bar - can't remember how many cals but I wrote it down somewhere.
1 soda - 160 cals
1 cup sweet tea
3 small pieces fried chicken
1/2 c. mixed veggies
1/2 c. mac & cheese (yeah, again. I like my mac & cheese, ok?)

Today:
I ate a lot!
2 sodas - 160 cals each
1 c. sweet tea
1 hot dog (my supervisor forced me) with:
mustard, horseradish sauce (never tried that before!), ketchup
4 or 5 salt & vinegar chips
2 tbsp baked beans (really didn't want to get gas at work, y'know? :) )
1 c. ovaltine w/ whole milk - approx 200 cals

This afternoon we went to a chinese buffet and I had
6 pieces of pork w/ some kind of red sauce on it
1 small sugar donut thingy
3 wontons (not fried) with some kind of pork stuffing (I think?)
1 large spoonful of sauteed mushrooms
1 egg roll
And, no, I didn't eat the fortune cookie but the fortune was pretty dead on. :)

S'all for now. I'm exhausted. And I feel disgusting for having eaten so much today. The husband-to-be wanted me to eat "dinner" when I got home after midnight but I declined. It'll be tomorrow's food.

I feel really good that I've cut down on the caffeine this week. I did it partly because I don't have the money to spend on soda but also partly because I know it's not helping the weight situation. I have been known, in the past, to drink up to 6 sodas a day. So only drinking 1 or 2 is a big accomplishment to me.

My only concern with eating more is the fact that right now I'm not really able to exercise. I don't want to start eating a lot and then not be exercising. It seems like a fast way to gain more. Am I wrong?

Welcome aboard - this place is great for support and it is a fountain of knowledge...

As far as eatign as long as you are eatign the right foods and healthy the exercise shouldnt matter too much...something like 80% of your healthy life style is food and the other 20% is exercise...dont quoate me on that but you can loose weight on just diet along (ie food)
