Fighting the Apple

I am now going to have a fresh turkey breast steak, steamed vegetables, some nuts - maybe some brown rice or even a few potatos.
In the event, I had two turkey breast steaks (grilled), boiled brown basmati rice, steamed broccoli, and low fat cottage cheese. Seasoned with reduced salt soy sauce, it was absolutely divine!

I'm now having a green tea. Next shopping, then later, probably a hard boiled egg. I love good food...

i'd hate it if you left, you have the most beautiful food! i love the way you focus on health and nutrition, and of course exercise.

do you like sweet potato? i only eat it now - no potatoes these days. its fabulous cut up and roasted with a bit of garlic and cumin. i have it with humous and lots of fresh coriander :D

I honestly think that when you get to goal is when you need the most support. While you are loosing you have something to strive for but once it’s gone then what???? I think once you have got to goal it’s your turn to support and help others, answer questions and give as much advice as possible just like your doing now. Good on you.

Good Morning TF,
I have to say thank you so much for that entry about "Why Do We Get Fat?" I have to say DITTO for me on a lot of that as well. I am so guilty of convenience eating that was horrible for my body and my daughter's.

Thanks for posting that, it helped to keep me cognizant of what I should be putting in my thoughts as well as my body!

Have a great Friday! :)

Thank you again all! This really is a supportive forum isnt it?

Sheidi: No, I haven't tried sweet potato yet - but I'm going to! I have all but given up potato. I still have it at times, but much less than I use to. I have seen sweet potato in the superstore, so I'll give it a go!

Rosered: Yes - the struggle goes on, and thats why I still like to keep this diary. I am convinced that the traditional slimming diet idea - a temporary cut, followed by returning to a 'normal' lifestyle once its 'finished' cannot work for most people in the long term. Some of us are genetically prone to put the excess pounds on various parts of our body - and we live in a consumer society in which the odds are stacked against people like us. However - I believe that we can win - but only by forcibly adopting new habits and changing lifestyle. It takes an element of self belief, but it is very much worthwhile. Obesity kills. Plain and simple.

Wishes: Thanks as always my gym buddy!

Ohappydaye: There are so many people like us who eat (or ate) badly - it seems so simple, but changing to a healthy diet can be the most important step towards weight loss - long term!

Have a great week end all! I've got another break from work - 10 days unless I get called in - lots of exercise, and enjoying life to do.

Diary.

Breakfast: High fibre bran and a banana. Whey shake.
Later: brown basmati rice, lentils, canned tuna, tomato, spring onion, and hummus. An apple.
Low fat cottage cheese sandwiches. A few mixed nuts.
Another banana. An orange juice.
Post-workout whey shake.
A small beef steak, a hard boiled egg, brown basmati rice, cottage cheese, two beetroot (slightly pickled), hummus, one small potato.
Fresh strawberries covered with low fat yoghurt.

Exercise: Swimming for 30 minutes. I'm a rotten swimmer, but managed 8 laps breast stroke - awful...

After a break - Gym for 1 hour 10 mins. Strength training - dumbbell and bench exercises, weight machines, exercise bike.

Ok, I am probably now going to go out now for a treat - a few beers etc, down the pub....

Very well put with respect to dieting and it being a long-term thing!

Good food and excerise too! I think I may need to take the dogs for an hour walk tonight now.

Enjoy the pub (but not too much)...LOL

Oh dear...

Last night's 'quick drink with the lads' turned into a bit of a binge. I am rather afraid that I had more than a few beers, never mind the scotch... I would hate to tot up the alcohol calories! Still, it was a good time ;)

As a result, I have been very listless today to say the least. I haven't made much of a dietary effort.

Breakfast: porridge oats with honey. Cup of orange juice.
Later: cottage cheese sandwich.
Down town: Chicken breast sub with ranch dressing.
Tea: ham salad with hummus and cottage cheese.
Supper - I'm going to steam a nice fillet of haddock fish, with some sweet potato and asparagus.

Exercise: Its going to be an exercise free weekend I'm afraid... However, I walked for hours with Wolfy - probably 5 or 6 miles including shopping in the town centre...

Tomorrow is our 18th wedding anniversary, and we have a table booked for a family meal at a chinese restaurant, so .... I'm going to be consuming an extortionate amount of calories tomorrow - no guilt though, its a very special occasion.

do bake the sweet potato if you can - chop up some garlic and sprinkle it over. or do you like baking/roasting full garlic cloves with the skin on and squeezing out the garlicky goodness, ack i'm drooling like homer just thinking about it :D

Hello there... new member here jumping in to say hello.

I read a bit of your diary and it sounds very sound. Looks like it's working well for you too.

Enjoy your meal out on your anniversary!

Thanks all! Sheidi - I will bake some sweet potatos, but for now, its so simple to chop to up and add it to the electric steamer with other veggies. I'm such a lazy cook!

About my electric steamer - it has three tiers, and cost me only £9.99. Steaming food is just so good. I grew up like most English children, having my vegs boiled to death in salty water. Steaming is a healthier way of cooking than by boiling. Its salt-free, and the food retains its nutrition, flavour, and texture far better than by using a boiling pan. Its also so clean and simple - all my veggies, and even my fish - all cooked in one steamer at once.

Some things I prefer grilled - such as steaks, corn on the cob, egg plant, and mushrooms. I usually baste grilled vegetables in extra virgin olive oil - but today I picked up one of those handy olive oil sprays - what a great idea!

I will bake some sweet potato sometime Sheidi and thank you for suggesting it - what a delicious substitute to potato, and apparently rich in vitamen A.

Diary.

Our 18th wedding anniversary.

I did do some exercise today after all. I needed to exercise Wolfy efore we left him alone in the house while we went out to lunch, so I...

Ran with wolfy on a cross country dog-jog for three miles...

We also walked for two miles down and around the town. By the way, we live in .

Breakfast: porridge oats and honey with an orange juice.

Anniversary meal: Naughty Ferret! Chinese buffet - two plate fulls, three bottles of beer, and no regrets - its a special dinner.

Snacks - very little after that buffet! two small satsumas, a handful of mixed nuts, and a glass of goats milk.

Evening meal: I'm now steaming broccoli, asparagus, and a little carrot and sweet potato. I'm going to have some with cottage cheese, eggs, and hummus.

well put beckster! Though within reason also!

Going overboard is acceptable, intentionally looking for every way possible to go overboard is not! hehe :)

I went 400 cal over on my birthday (it was the cake i tell you!) and didnt go to the gym. I felt guilty anyway but it was worth it!

Thanks both for the anniversary wishes!

Diary.

Food

Porridge oats with honey for breakies.
Two hard boiled eggs and two thick cottage cheese sandwiches (w/m bread as always).
Post workout whey shake.
Three small satsumas, a handful of nuts / seeds, an apple, a banana, and a cereal bar, another egg, a little cod roe, for various snacks.
Evening meal was tuna steaks, broccoli, a leek, a sweet potato, a carrot, hummus, extra virgin olive oil, and dollops of cottage cheese.

Exercise:
One hour strength training session in the gym: dumbbell bench presses, dumbbell flies, single armed rows, concentration curls, shoulder presses, and I hit some weight machines hard - superset style. I'm increasing weights at the moment, making some progress. Also warm up and cool down on exercise bike. Not bad for one hour! Followed by sauna.

Swimming - doesnt really count, as I wasnt really swimming, but holding my special boy, .

Dog walking - a good two miles.

I also fitted in an appointment at the local NHS physiotherapy dept, about my back troubles. It looks cool, they were really good, gave me a good look over. I'm going back on Wednesday and Friday for acupuncture - on the health service!

Mrs Ferret's Birthday.

I tried hard to give Mrs Ferret a nice birthday this year, and I seem to have succeeded, so its been a good day.

However, between you and me Fitness Diary - its been a shameful day for fitness ;)

Food

Brekkies: High Fibre bran with a chopped banana and whey milk shake. Orange juice.
Later: a cafe brunch of scrambled eggs and cheese on muffins! The shame of it! Snacks: two fresh figs, an apple, a few sweeties.
A small can of red salmon, two slices of wholemeal bread.
Evening: Oh dear, Mrs Ferret wanted another chinese meal - this time a takeaway. Well, I had to eat it with her, didn't I? I wouldnt even like to guess the calories, but it was a lot!

Exercise: No gym, no cardio, no jogging today -its Mrs Ferret's day. We did walk with Wolfy around Norwich for 3 hours shopping. I also walked Wolfy 2 miles before bed.

Ah well ... no more anniversaries or birthdays for a while, I can get back into the saddle tommorrow!

Thank you Dariqueen - yes, Edward might be severely disabled, but he is a very happy boy, and we are very proud of him!

Diary.

Brekkies: porridge oats with whey protein and honey added.
Late morning meal: cottage cheese, a slice of wholemeal bread, a banana, and a cereal bar.
Post workout: whey protein shake.
Mid afternoon: a little cod roe, and a big ox liver sandwich - 2 slices of w/m bread and a nice tasty portion of grilled ox liver. 2 satsumas, a fresh fig, an apple.
Snacks: a handful of mixed nuts. a packet of beef jerky.
Evening meal: Now cooking: turkey breast fillets, steamed vegetables - cob of corn, portabela mushroom, a leek, and a little chopped swede. Cottage cheese, lentils, and olive hummus.
I might have a little yoghurt later in the evening.

Exercise: A very good strength training session at the gym: 10 minutes on the eliptical crosstrainer for warm up, then dumbbells, bench, weight machines - including a few supersets. I'm getting an increase on those weights, and really starting to see my body change now. 5 minutes cool down on exercise bike.

Walking: total through the day so far around 3 miles or so, will try to get 2 more in after 'tea'.

I had my acupuncture treatment this afternoon - but my back was still awful afterwards :(

To cheer myself up, I bought some new clothes, I love my new sizes :)
