Fighting the Apple

It might not be that great an idea really - it could be something to do with my bad back problem ;) I guess there are other substitutes you could use - other people's dogs, children, cyclists, buses...

Oh kids! i have 4 kids, ill get a leash for them :D

Actually i often help my oldest son take the newspapers for walks. When they misbehave we leave them in peoples letter boxes - i realize its probably irrisponsable of us to do so but we get several hundred of them a week, i swear they bread!

:D

No time for Self

I'm stuck on a stretch of eight 12 hour night shifts at the moment, so I don't always have the time to exercise as much as I would like to :( I probably wont have time to post here so often also.

Still, I do what I can - yesterday: 50 crunches, 50 press ups, and a three mile dog walk. Today? I shall have to see. If someone in the family can walk Wolfy for me, I might get a strength training session in at the gym - if not, then I'll at least get a dog walk. There is always a positive side.. Yesterday's dog walk was very nice - we went into the forest - it was alternating between rain and sunshine. There were lots of mushrooms and toadstools, and condensation was rising from the ground like steam. Just as well, it was a hard rotten shift later at the station.

I'm eating very healthy still - yesterday's protein included turkey breast, tuna, and cottage cheese. I've just had my beloved porridge oats - I do look forward to my porridge - I rush out of bed - 'its a porridge day!' - well, actually most days are porridge day, and why not? I just sneaked a look on the scales - no weight gain, 144.25 pounds - so I can stop panicing that I'm getting fat again ;)

I'm now halfway through the 12 hour shifts - some really hard work at the moment. None-the-less, I had a strength training session at the gym yesterday, and I might get time for a cardio session today before work :)

We got our scales back from the shop. I took a reading:

144.25 pounds
BMI 21.9
Body Fat Percentage 20.0 %

Over the past four or five weeks, while I have been eating protein to build, I have still lost around two pounds - but my body fat percentage has dropped by 0.7% - I'm fairly pleased with that. I have been eating lots (I take three lunch boxes to work on 12 hour shifts!), but all good healthy and wholesome food, several small meals a day, and animal protein with most meals. I'm eating alot of chicken/turkey breast, tuna, yogurt, egg whites, and cottage cheese.

The lower body fat percentage is nice to see on the scales - I hope to see 19% next, fingers crossed. I certainly feel that I am slowly reducing body fat - the only place where I still have excess is on my man boobs and tummy - I've had fat there since I was 11 years and thought that I always would (I'm 44 now), but now, I can see the day when I might not be embarrassed to take my top off on the beach. Its never too late!

I have a cold! Still stuck on 12 hour night shifts, I'm not getting time for the gym or running, and I feel miserable ... :( ... but not completely - its the first bug that I have had since I changed lifestyle six months ago, and I only have three night shifts left to get through before a day off :) There is often a better way of looking at things.

I have only managed to get to gym once this week, for a strength training session - but I am going to fit in a cross country running session today - in fact, I'm going to put this computer down shortly (I've had my porridge oats, yummy), and get out with Wolfy.

As part of my lifestyle diet, I aim for variety - I'm always looking for new and different nutritous foods to try. Last night I discovered houmous, made from chick peas. It was delicious in my tuna salad (is that disgusting? It worked for me).

It was a great run - 5 or 6 miles through the forest with Wolfy. Having a cold wasnt any barrier. A beautiful sunny late afternoon / early evening.

doing great as always. i love homous too - i make my own and its delicious. its great with fish, sometimes i have it with salmon. the only trouble is i tend to eat too much :D

I'll have to try it with salmon sometime - thanks Sheidi :)

I'm struggling to find enough time for myself at the moment - but one more long shift - then I'm finally over the long haul. I did manage to squeeze in just under an hour for a quick strength training session this afternoon. There are several new cardio machines at the gym, put there for inductions, as the gym will be replaced soon with a brand new larger gym.

I've been reading lots about food again - I keep trying to vary my diet more. I had some wholegrain rice with my bean/nut/tuna salad last night - its ages since I had rice. I sprinkled some reduced salt soy sauce over it - it was delicious!

hehehe toothless,
I feel like i eat more now than i did, and because im also doing weights need to keep the protien up. The looks i get eating all the time and often having steak sammies or other nice stuff is just funny - they dont understand how im loosing weight :D

Wishes - tell me about it! Personally, I don't like the sound of low carb diets like the Atkins - they sound crazy! I lost weight by eating balanced - none of this low carb nonsense ;)

However, since I have increased protein and included good quality proteins with most meals (several times per day) for muscle growth - I too have noticed that I seem to be eating like an ox, but so far - not gained any weight - certainly no body fat. I did read somewhere, a suggestion that eating protein with good carbs does minimise body fat gain - I don't know if there is any authority behind that claim, but I'm presently wondering - mind you, all of the exercise is helping too!

The trick seems to be to eat foods that are rich in complete protein, but low in saturated fats. Subsequently, I eat loads of chicken breast, pots of low fat cottage cheese, tuna, salmon, eggs (I eat one yolk for every two eggs), milk, yoghurt, beef jerky, mixed beans and nuts, lean beef steak, liver, etc.

One thing that does concern me is that I have started buying lots of canned tuna in spring water. Canned tuna is notorious for high levels of mercury, but it is such an otherwise good protein, so easy to serve in a salad etc, and so cheap compared with some other proteins. Still, I should maybe keep a check on my tuna intake.

Todays exercise - just ran/jogged a three mile trail through the forest with Wolfy in 27 minutes. It was surprisingly hot, and hard - when we reached the forestry visitor centre - both Wolfy and myself had our mouths under the drinking water tap! Working nights - you sort of lose track of the daytime weather...

I finally finished the long night shifts yesterday!

After a sleep, I had chores to do, then later had a good strength training session at the gym - weight machines and dumbbells.

Steak salad for tea, then I treated myself to a trip down to the pub. Copious amounts of beer and whisky, one Portuguese custard tart, and home again. I remember a post-drink gorge on some processed chicken breast slices, and on tinned fish in tomato sauce before bed .... so its true, alcohol does fuel hunger!

I took Wolfy for a nice walk this morning - and I'm now off to the gym for an indoor cardio session - might get a chance to try the new treadmills... See yer later Diary!

I think you do an excellent job considering you work nights!! My husband just started a teaching job (he has his master's degree, but there weren't any jobs for him), after working nights for four years. He's gained quite a bit!! You
are doing so well.

Hello there toothless. Wow! You are doing amazing (I would have to agree) considering the night shifts and all.
You running in the woods with your furkid sounds great. I love taking my furkids out just prior to sunset for our walk/jog about the farm and to the woods. The scenery is always changing. Keep up the great work!

Thanks both! Shiftworkers are more likely to suffer from a number of health issues - including becoming overweight, and i do think that shift work contributed towards my weight gain and digestion problems. By educating myself about lifestyle and nutrition, I should be able to avoid some of my old habits of eating in the future.

Wolfy also has to understand that exercise isn't going to be set at regular times - that it also has to fit around my shifts. Shift work does have some benefits - for example, I get to use the gym at quiet times!

We went to the gym today, and I did some sessions on the exercise bike and on the treadmill. It really felt like a poor workout - I blame it on last night's booze session, but I might also have a bug - I have felt unusually weak and unhappy all day :( I had a fresh dressed crab, followed by some fruit, then I took my eldest daughter on the train to Norwich. I certainly got plenty of walking in today - but it wasn't pleasant - my old back problem felt really awful all afternoon (I'm having a bit of a moany session, sorry). We had a meal together in a - I had a delicious seafood ramen :)

Seafood seems to be the protein of the day - I'm now about to sink my teeth into a succulent steamed cod fish (with a cob of corn, and maybe a tomato or something)....

I love this healthy eating - shame about my back.

Ohhh...last night's booze session - I hear ya there...
I'm hoping to feel normal in a couple of days ;)

Sorry to hear about your back :( I hope you get relief soon!

You're looking good in that new avatar M! The back pain - the annoying thing is that I still havent found a doctor whao can tell what is causing it - so far x-rays and blood tests have shown no problem. I'm seeing a neurologist next. Never mind, I havent let it stop me from exercise so far.

Thanks TF - I had put up some picts in the B&A section, and decided to update the avatar in the process :)

TF - I hope they can get to what the problem is in order to fix it! Glad to hear it's not stopping you from exercise, but you wouldn't want to be exacerbating the problem either!
