FatPanda doesn't want to be a SadPanda

Hello everyone, and welcome to my diary.

Today is the first day of my diet, so I'm sure it will be hard. For me, working in a restaurant where "bad" but good food is readily available makes dieting that much harder.

My goals this week are

Eat breakfast, since I usually skip it.
Bring lunch in the form of a protein shake so I can avoid eating at work
Walk an hour a day
Fix my bike so I can ride to work starting next week.
Don't drink anything that contains calories

My diet outline is not going to be crazy strict as I'm just starting and I don't know how much to eat and how my body will respond.

This is what I have so far

Breakfast

6 eggs
1 Banana

Lunch

4oz chicken breast
1 apple

Dinner

Protein shake with 16oz of 1% milk
Orange
2tbsp of Natural Peanut butter

I'm going to try this for a week and see how I do, if I feel I'm still intensely hungry I'll throw in a healthy snack between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and dinner.

Sounds like a good plan. I don't see anything about snacks and I was just thinking about how important they are b/c if I get hungry I start craving something bad and just lose it. So having some low cal, nutritional snacks that we actually want to eat, I think it very important. Good luck with day one.

Bert,

Thanks for the reply buddy, it's appreciated. Snacks to me our my enemy. I can't just stop with one chip, or one cracker, or one insert carb here. So for me, I would like to keizer soze the entire thing, it's easier that way.

For you it might be better to snack, I think you'll just have to try and see. One thing I might keep on hand is some granola bars or some equivalent.

So, it's about 7:32pm here, day 1 is almost complete. I've already had all the intake I am going to have for the day and I can feel the hunger pains coming on, going to drown it out with water tonight though.

Speaking of drowning with water, man did it rain today. It was so bad I really didn't want to go for my walk, but I had promised myself I was going to, and out the door I went. It felt good to walk, it helped that a friend with me. I've always loved walking, it really makes you appreciate being alive, all the different sights, sounds, smells, and the feeling of wind on your skin is awesome.

I'm going to read some and turn in for the night. Day 2 will be a toughie.

Hey I saw your awesome name on the November challenge and had to come say hi :) I weight about 13 pounds more than you but I have no idea how tall you are so that makes a difference. Still though after seeing how little you ate the first day that really doesn't look like enough. I've fought my weight all my life and tried just about every diet there is and also varying kinds of major calorie restriction. None of it was anything I could stick to long term, nor did I ever get that great of results..especially after a week or two in.

But the last several months I finally have kicked my "diet" mentality and I'm not starving myself or feeling deprived or hungry and I this is really the best I've ever done in so short a time. All I did was use an online calculator for BMR that also accounts for some activity to figure out what I burn each day then I set my calories below that. I'm eating about 1900 a day and losing 2.5-3.5 pounds a week and it hasn't even been difficult.

Hope you don't take offense at me saying this. I just know guys need more calories than women and you really should check it out. Cutting back too drastically doesn't work and your body is going to resist and win sooner or later. It took me a while to be brave enough to up my calories too but after reading all the info about it in the stickies and seeing how much success everyone else here had doing that, I finally am doing it and like I said I couldn't be happier with the results. Honestly the simpler and less restrictive your plan is the more likely you're going to be able to make it a successful life change. Good luck and welcome to the forum :) ~Lisa

So, i missed posting a couple days so i'll sum it all up today.

Day 2

It's been going pretty smoothly actually, I don't feel as lethargic as I expected I would. Heres what I ate for day 2

Breakfast
1 banana 75 calories
6 eggs scrambled 570 calories

snack
1 oz cashews 160 calories

Lunch
1 apple 75 calories
4oz top sirloin 186 calories
1 oz provolone cheese 100 calories
1 bread roll 300 calories

Dinner
2 tbsp natural peanut butter 210 calories
2 scoops whey protein 225 calories
16oz 1 % milk 250 calories

Total calories 2151

I also walked for 3.25 miles in an hour.

Day 3

Breakfast
bowl of cereal with 1 % milk 450 calories
banana 75 calories

Snack
1oz cashews 160 calories

Lunch
8oz top sirloin 372 calories
1 oz cheese 100 calories
1 orange 60 calories
1 bread roll 300 calories

Dinner
2 scoops whey protein 225 calories
16 oz 1 % milk 250 calories

Total 1992 calories

And I missed my walk as I had a very stressful long night at work.

So, just from looking at my calories, and feeling the difference of energy levels between 1500 calories (first day) and 2100 calories (second day) I can see how important it is to count calories.

According to the BMR calculator, I need 2718.5 calories to maintain weight. If I was to reduce calories to 1718.5, I would lose 2 pounds per week, according to my calculations(at least until my metabolism catches on haha). So, that's the number I'm shooting for, if it's too hard for me and I feel the need to eat more then I will. So far water has been the best weapon in defeating hunger between meals. Maybe I should start the drown yourself diet lol.

Anyways, Lisa thanks for the reply! I appreciate your insight into the situation and while I won't be increasing the calories over 1700 unless I feel the need I totally understand what you mean. How long have you been on your current diet? That's awesome weight loss you've had so far, congrats. Hopefully I'll be able to post some negative numbers this coming monday.

As for todays meal plan

Day 4

Breakfast
1 apple 75 calories
1 bowl of cereal 450 calories

Snack
Cashew bar? 160 calories

Lunch/Dinner
Subway footlong 980 calories wow didn't know it was this much :(
rest of protein shake from last night 100 calories

Total 1765 calories

Damn subway tricked me lol. Oh well, won't make that mistake again.

Anyone else not looking forward to saying a lot of "no's" on turkey day?

Adam

I always say I'm gonna cheat on holidays but then none of my husbands family cooks anything even remotely that tempting :X. Shhh...dun tell.

Anyway I was doing low carb until I came to this forum...and in fact was doing it several months on here but after repeatedly not being able to stick to it somebody pointed out that I should look into why that was and asked me if maybe it wasn't too restrictive. I didn't want to hear that at first, lol. But it stuck with me and I finally just tryed watching calories...nothing fancy. You're food that you posted now is looking great...lots of variety and even fruit. I get subway a few times a month, especially on days I accidently skip breakfast or lunch. They have calorie menus there you can use at the time and most fast food places have calorie calculators online now. That and fitday.com or sparkpeople.com lets you log your food and counts calories for you...even breaks it down into percents for fat, protein, etc. Just another tool if you want to use it. Anyway you're doing great and I can't wait to see you start posting your results :)

Woo! The Panda's visited my diary. I can now officially say I've spoken with a panda!

"When one little panda sticks his little panda willie in another panda's ear, that makes me a saaaaad panda" (sorry..I had to!!)

Pfft, fast food is the devil! And my friend was kinda in the same situation as me, only a bit less so, but still....nite after nite eating onion rings n spicey sauce at burger king was prolly killing us slowly. heh.

------

Yanno..on Turkey Day..I get kinda lucky, I don't like pie and I don't like turkey. So I end up eating stuffing, gravey, sweet potatos, and marshmallow stuff (Marshmallow, manderin oranges, sour cream, and pineapple mixed). Still fattening, but eh.

I look at Thanksgiving like this. For me, because it's a heavy full meal, I can put one serving of everything on my plate and never finish. Since our family doesn't eat full meals like that cept for holidays.

What'd you get at subway that it came out to 980 calories?! Try sticking to the 6grams of fat or less subs, you can get a foot long for around 600-700calories, with cheese or mayo or neither on there if you wish or just one or the other.

(sorry that was a novel!)

THE COLD CUT COMBO, A CALORIE PACKER IN DISGUISE

Of course, the italian herb and cheese bread and having cheddar didn't help lol.

Hey great job. I commend your for counting your calories. I want to do that too. I made me a spreadsheet to keep up with my daily info and included a place for calories, fats, carbs and proteins but I haven't taken the time to fill in that part yet. I haven't used the elliptical since I started back last week but had used one the last time I was in the gym. I'll probably get on it some starting next week. Sorry you had a stressful day at work. My day was half stressful as we had our monthly financial review but it went well so the 2nd half was much better which motivated me at the gym. I have a feeling I'll be sore tomorrow (or the next day). Keep up the good work.

Oh what kind of pretein shake are you using? Do you like it?

I got it from . They had a deal on 25lb of whey concentration and I figured I couldn't pass that up. Then I bought their "natural flavor" double fudge dutch chocolate to add something to it. As far as liking it goes, it's better then drinking rancid milk :puke: lol.

Well, I didn't eat enough today. I was caught up in band practice and by the time I got home it was real late and I didn't want to eat before bed. Oh well, I'll do better today.

Day 5

Breakfast
1 orange 62 calories
6 eggs 420 calories

Lunch
8oz Top sirloin 372 calories
1 oz cheese 100 calories
1 hoagie bread 300 calories

Snack/Dinner
1 glass orange juice 110 calories

Total 1364 calories

Hey Panda :)

First, love the diary name :)

I love your weekly goals. I also set 3 weekly goals and it really helps. Instead of thinking about the months in front of me, it's nice to take it one week at at time.

LOL Subway can be tricky but they do have healthy choices! I always get the foot long veggie on wheat with ALL the veggies. No mayo, mustard, cheese, nothing. It's a total of 460 calories and I usually split it into 2 meals. On days I'm feeling crazy I'll get some provolone cheese :p

You seem to be doing pretty well with the nutrition part of the journey. Always been a struggle for me. So kudos to you :)

How's the exercising going?

Hey, what do you have against rancid milk? Good job yesterday, probably better to have eaten less than more. I just got done raking leaves for an hour so I am debating letting that be my excercise for today. Groceries are getting low so I have to find something good (for me) to eat. Enjoy your weekend.

Oh yeah, what kind of band?

Hey thanks for the reply.

Weekly goals are definitely the only way I can do it as I have a tendency to go nuts all at once and that usually ends in failure.

Speaking of failure, I'm probably not going to be able to ride to work until Friday depending on when my rain suit gets here. I was deciding if I was going to just ghetto solider it and wear a plastic bag but I don't think I'm ready for that kind of humility yet lol.

Nutrition is my biggest weakness as well. I have a good amount of will power but man do I love bad food.

I guess I came off kind of harsh towards rancid milk drinkers and I apologize. I am not a fan of rancid milk personally, but I do not judge people that enjoy doing "that" thing.

Raking leaves? I can't stand raking leaves. It seems like every time I have to rake leaves it has been raining for the past month and the leaves are like giant stonefilled starfish; Might as well call that your weight training.

When groceries get low I go into Panda Panic mode. I know that I'll somehow convince myself it's better to eat out then go shopping hungry. I try to go shopping every 3 days, that way I have fresh fruits.

I play in an old school thrash band. It's probably not a lot of peoples cup of tea but I enjoy the energy it brings to people.

I have been a bad panda though. I've been helping my friend put an engine in his car this whole weekend and have basically not had time to go home and make myself food. Soooooo, my diet Kiiiiinnnda went a little stray. We couldn't get the engine mounts lined up and my stress level was at a level where I was about to sledge hammer the old mount away and weld in a new one. That being said, heres what day 6 and day 7 look like

Day 6

Breakfast
bowl of cereal 410 calories
Banana 75 calories

Lunch 12:00pm

6 inch turkey sandwich 500 calories
1 apple 70 calories

Now heres where all systems went bad

Dinner 3am
4 single cheeseburgers mcdonalds 1200 calories of garbage
but I did avoid fries and soda which was a plus

Total 2255 calories

Day 7

started at 2:00pm when I woke up. We didn't get finished rebuilding the engine until 6am so I slept in.

Breakfast

Rice chicken teriyaki I'm guessing 800 calories or so

and then we worked on the car for the rest of the night. Just got finished so i'm exhausted and too tired to eat. Hopefully I can keep on track all 7 days next week. I didn't get a walk in yesterday, or today either :/.

Adam

That is great of you to help your buddy out. Definitely better than sitting on the couch watching football, which is what I did yesterday. I havent' hit the ellptical yet but still plan to. The weights are going okay. I am still going a little slow, til my muscles get used to lifting again. I haven't been sleeping too good, maybe b/c I'm sore, so I'm dragging a little today but today will be a cardio only day but at home, since I have to babysit this evening.

Hey you!!
Thanks for popping in my diary =D

I'm doin' good! Little off track in eating but that's what a new day is always for!!

That's great to help your friend!
I love "helping" my friend work on cars (ie. I stand around and hand him things or help him lift the heavy stuff. lol. But it's fun to watch.)

--Holly

Well, today was much smoother then yesterday.

Breakfast

small bowl cereal 240 calories
banana 75 calories

Lunch
8 oz top sirloin steak 372 calories
1 oz cheese 100 calories
1 large baked potato 278 calories

Dinner
1 large bowl of cereal 600 calories

Total 1665 calories

I went for an hour walk tonight, it was nice out. I am also looking forward to riding to work again, just waiting on ups.
