Fasting should be out!

Mmy Nutritionist told me that the greatest SIN of all when you are trying to loose weight is to skip meals, that is especially to SKIP BREAKFAST. She said that if we skip breakfast, or go on a crush diet, our body sends a signal to the brain that the body is starving and in turn the metabolic rate slows down to preserve energy, and your fat burning process slows down a lot. If we skip more meals, that is breakfast and lunch, we tend to eat more food at dinnertime, cause your brain will send out a signal that you are so hungry.
 
if fasting is so bad, why did jesus do it? and not that im a bible freak or anything but i have heard its promoted in there (the bible)somewhere :rolleyes:
 
Its not promoted in the bible...it was a technique they used in the old testament days when they wanted to have no other worldly things binding them... so that they could cleanse their systems and be rid of the poisons... It can be used in a positive way...but not to lose weight
 
EXACTLY! Unfortunately that woudl just get me closer to the refrigerator..I prefer going to church or opening my bible instead :-D
 
I eat two meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and feel great. I don't know if this would work for every one but it has been good for me so far.
 
I think that is the key, whatever works for you. I know that if i ate only two meals, by evening i would be hungry, I would think that I could eat a little something as I hadn't had much in the day, and that would open the flood gates!!:eek:
But if that eating plan works for you, and you can lose weight and not find it difficult to stick to, then that is obviously the plan for you.
 
If starving yourself stops / slows your metabolism, why are anorexics so skinny? When exactly does your body go into starvation mode?
 
Starvation does slow the metabolism down, but if you are hardly eating anything, then you are still going to lose weight. It is when you have been eating too little and then you start eating more again that the slow metabolism causes weight gain. Any extra food that you eat, the body grabs hold of and turns into fat rather than burn it, because it is unsure when the next meal is coming.
 
I fast 1 day a year. Traditionally it is no water and no food for 25 hrs, but I will drink water... due to medical reasons. I get extreame headaches and migranes if I don't.

But yes, once a year on Yom Kippur, Day of Atonment I fast.

Which happens to be coming up in September I think.

Besides that I am totally against fasting.

All I can say is I have been there done that. I skipped meals, I fasted, all in order to get that perfect "Hollywood" thin look, then I woke up. Worst thing in the world to do to your body is starve it to death. I learned my lesson.
 
Well said, Miaterith. It is good to hear from someone who knows from experience how bad it is, and also it is great to see that you realised that it was bad for you, and are now on a healthier path. Great going! :)

I disagree...I know that if you are starving yourself (fasting) your body goes into Starvation Mode and slows your metabolism way down due to the decrease in calories BUT even if your metabolism is running slowly its still running and your fat will not just stay on your body forever...If you are depriving yourself of food your body will use excess fat to survive which means that your slow metabolism must be burning something....think about it...You cant just stop eating for a month and expect your body to mantain its same weight. The downfall of starving though is the fact that you are not only losing fat and water but you are also losing muscle and you dont want to do that. But if you are thinking about fasting make sure that you do not drink high calorie juices or any food period because your body will hold onto every ounce you give it when its being deprived.

Some foods are ok to eat while you have been fasting. Lettuce leaves, celery, carrots etc are quite safe to eat.
If you fast for a few days, then binge on high-fat foods your body will hold onto the fat.

You will lose weight if you fast. It may take a few days for your body to adjust, but you will lose weight eventually. Only problem is, you can only fast for a certain length of time, after that you either end up stacking on weight again or dying from starvation.

I think ill stick with just watching what i eat and working out.
 
I agree. Eating well and moderately and exercising seems to work the best. It certainly has worked well for me so far.
 
for me i cant see no other option at the moment other than to stop eating. i binge and as soon as i have my first bit of food a day thats it, ill eat right throughout the day.

how long would it take for you to start losing weight when fasting?
 
You need to be careful Summergurl. A lot of the time if you fast to lose weight, your metabolism drops and when you start to eat again (which eventually you have to) the weight comes back really quickly. Do you have a good breakfast? I find if I wait until I am hungry before I eat my first thing of the day, I start and can't stop. It may be an idea to try several small meals a day and try not to let yourself get hungry.
