Fasting should be out!

yeah mrs bear, i usually have breakfast as soon as a i get up but latley iv been waiting untill im hungry and then binging after cuz im not "full enough". i think i will try fasting as of tomo and then change my eating habits completly when i start back at eating again. i know that sounds easier said than done but i think if i see a good weight loss through fasting i can see myself understanding that binging is wrong, its not doing me any good and i can kick the habit.

I cannot say 'don't fast' but I would hate for you to see a big drop, then put some of it back on when you start eating again. That would be really demoralising. Also, the last thing you want to do at the beginning of a diet is give your metabolism a kicking. Exercise boosts your metabolism, and eating does aswell. Everytime you eat, your metabolism gets a little boost, which means that you actually burn more calories doing your every day activities the rest of the day.

I really hope you reconsider fasting, if anything is going to send you binging, it is restricting yourself that severely.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do ;)

Try a cleansing diet rather than fasting - much healthier and better for you in so many ways... this site has some useful info, recipes etc ...

When I started my current weight loss I simply cut out snacking between meals and the weight began to come off right away. I worked my way from three meals and many snacks, to three meals and no snacks, to two meals a day over the course of a few weeks. When I added regular exercise to my routine, the weight came off even faster. I wouldn't recommend stopping eating altogether but reducing caloric intake and increasing exercise has worked wonders for me. Don't stop eating. Just eat differently.

I get the feeling that reducing your calories insn't so much a problem as the binging. Binging will really hurt you. I have binged on occasion but I came to realize that every time I do I have to spend a week or more to get back to where I was before the binge. It is so demoralizing to have to go back and lose the weight all over again. Now when I think about a binge, I think about how unhappy I will be when I have to relose the weight.

Is there any really good detox diet anyone knows about? Something that will help clean your system out?

Fasting... not the best idea.. at all. I know it's been said enough times but people aren't getting the message clearly, and it is horrible for someone to fast for a long time to drop weight and then gain more back. We've lived in the age of plenty for not more than a few hundred years, at best a millenium, but we are a product of millions upon millions of years of evolution, and take it from someone who has studied this, in alot of situations, your body is smarter than you are :p.

it is used to living in a time where food can be scarce, and if it recognizes that situation, it starts to conserve energy and the first things to go are your muscles. hell, your experiencing famine, what do you need your muscles for? but fat, fat you need because you store more energy as fat than muscle. so now you start eating again, is your body gonna give you back that muscle? never, its gonna deposit it directly into fat and then wait for more food to deposit into fat.. so this may get people saying "but you see, your body has to use some of that energy to live off of, so its not all going to fat" unfortunately when you starve yourself, your body goes into a mode where you use as little energy as possible, only that essential to survive. What does this mean? you wake up tired, you spend the day tired, your in a depressive state of mind, everything seems harder to do, you have decreased fatigue, you'll notice a major loss in stamina, and these were all once things that used up energy but are now no longer there so the energy that was required for them is no longer needed.. which means you get enough to live off of, and the rest goes directly into fat.

trust me, fasting to lose weight.. BAD idea. I tried it when I was like.. 16, I didn't know any better. I lost 10 lbs, crazy eh! In a month I was 15 pounds heavier lol, trust me it doesn't work. I know more about the body now, i've lost nearly 60 lbs and its a breeze to keep it off, and I don't starve myself either. On the contrary... man do I eat good food :D

take care, seriously now.. take care.

"After approximately three days of fasting, feelings of hunger usually become infrequent or disappear altogether."

Wouldn't that be nice if you could make it 3 days? I can't hardly make 3 hours!!

Might be a good idea

For anyone fasting: Nevermind the uncertified opinions of selfproclaimed helth gurus. If you don't eat you will loose weight, and to do this fast is needed for those of us who are an inch from up.

No, it is not THE sollution for long term weight management, but it was the only thing that worked for me (and I tried all of the "only X diets" and "not X diets")

Loosing 9 lbs in a matter of 48 hours is enough to motivate even the most "hopeless" of us.
Sure! It is improtant to see a doctor if you notice that your body has a hard time coaping.

Also, this might sound like the "Stop eating diet" :D
I am not saying that fasting is easy, I know, my friends: The first 48 hours is prettymuch repeating the phrase "No, I am not going to eat" over and over again. And it did take me about two years before I made it over those first 48 hours, but just keep trying.

When you start eating again, your stomach will have shrunk and this will give you a great starting point for your new, improved eating habits.

I recomend staring your fast with three days where you don't have to do anything: NO work, NO chores and (for the love of god and all other things that might or might not be holy) NO walking inside, outside, next to or even within sight of a store

Never give up, my friends

Hurray for you :hurray:

Wow, this topic has evolved since the last time I post it here...

Anyway, I fast also but only in Ramadan as required for Muslims to do it... Its the most enjoyable month to fast in... great time! I simply love it!

Occasionally I do fast here and there for religious reasons also, not a bit of regret.

Certainly, breakfast is very important and I usually loose more weight if I eat a proper breakfast and thats why also God command us to eat at dusk before we start our fast for the day and break our fast at dawn...

Although that may be true, fasting a day out of the month has been proved healthy in regards to recharging the body and resting the digestive system. If your on a diet, fasting frequently would definitely destroy it but doing it very seldomly for health purposes will you do you some good.

not so bad

fasting is not as evil as all you say it is. until recent history people did not always have full supermarkets and had periods of little or no food. it is ok to slow down and not have to stuff yourself on cue. sometimes we seem to be programed to eat or are shown advertisments that make us hungry. i have been doing this for a little or a month and i feel great. lost about 8 lbs and dont attack my fridge when my [16 to 18 hours] is up. we eat too much processed foods and need to give our bodies a break. the processed foods are also designed to make you hungry for more. [you have seen what the tabacco companies did ]. just start with...if you are not hungry, dont eat...if you are a little hungry ....have some fruit or nuts.

This is the thing, we are programmed for these sit down meals. Who ever said we are supposed to eat three meals a day. Eat when your body needs it. Learn to listen to your body.

I have been slim all my life and I listen to my body. I do not need or even think about food in the morning. I drink tea. Then I have a very, very small bowl of bran if hungry. During the week my main meals are lunch and dinner.

I have an immense amount of energy and no health problems. Often on the weekends my husband, my children and myself only have breakfast and dinner. We will have our breakfast at about 10 or 11 am, a large breakfast and then won't eat until about 6 pm.

But I guess it depends what you are putting into your body to begin with. We grow our own veges, have our own chickens and catch our own seafoods. That food seems to sustain us.

actually fasting is what we try to do when we want to lose weight quickly because we feel desperate- or have an event, etc.
I've tried it before and it is awful, just liquids? not for me. my body is smarter than that.

fasting might seem an ''easy'' way out for losing weight but think about it. in that short notice what goes first is water and even muscle. fat takes longer to get burned.
also if it took you a considerable amount of time to get the weight on (for me it's been all my life, chubby since I was 10) it is only natural that it will take you a little longer than you expected to lose it all. I say 4-6 months of eating properly and exercising regularly is the best way to go: don't starve yourself or exercise until you are almost fainting, the results won't last.

I lost 6 kilos (like 13 pounds) in about 4 months back in 2007. just eating normally- but adding whole grains and more veggies and exercising 3 times a week in a curves gym. It wasn't extreme at all and now in 2009 I haven't gained that weight back even though I stopped dieting and exercising!
believe me not having that weight back is worth the effort and extra time.
