eating late..

hey im out alot with my friends now that summers comming around..and when im out at like 1-3 am i get hungry..but i heard it really bad to eat late..so are there any types of food i can eat or anything like that..thanks

My personal suggestion: Water

It's bad enough to eat late in the evening, but at 1-3am, I really don't think it's very appropriate for your digestive system, which needs a rest like everything else.

From what I gather, eating something takes two hours to digest, and about eight hours to fully digest. So you want to stop eating stuff entirely at 8 or 9 at night.

It's fine to eat late as long as it fits into your macronutrient requirements for that particular day.

I've never understood why it would be unacceptable to eat late at night. As ~LV~ said, as long as it fits your daily needs, it doesn't matter when you eat it. I eat right before bed sometimes and it has never had any negative impact on my goals.

Can't store something out of nothing. If you are in an energy deficit, you have no capacity to store.

Problem is:

Most people who are up at 1-3 in the morning are NOT tracking their cals and macros to know for sure if they are in the right limits. Hence, you have a lot of fat night owls walking around. :p

The reason people say eating late at night is bad isn't because it's bad to eat at say... 'night'. It's bad to eat before 'bed' is the answer. This is because your metabolism slows down and the food sits in your stomach longer, it uses less of that energy while you're sleeping and the extra energy becomes not unlike calories not used during the daily routine. Now say, if you work the night shift and you want your evening lunch by all means, go ahead. If you don't go to sleep until 6:00 am there shouldn't be any issue with eating at 3:00am. Just realize that if you're laying down within two hours you might have some extra calories that are being devoured at a much slower rate.

And why is that a problem? In fact, that is somewhat desireable. The reason people eat cottage cheese before bed is because it has casein protein and will break down slowly in your system, feeding your muscles.

And?

What's the big deal if you are in a caloric deficit?

ie at right before bed on purpose, i even wake up to eat

Chad Waterbury has suggested setting an alarm at 4 hours into your sleep cycle to wake up, take casein protein, complex carbs and BCAAs... As it's been said a couple of times, eating at night is not bad at all, unless you're blowing your macros/calories for the day.

A side note; if you're eating at 1-3 am because that's when the bars close, than you're probably not eating the right kind of food :)
