Dumpy's diet diary

Weeeeeeee! Doing the happy dance here:hurray::hurray::hurray: I'm 3lbs down and hubby is 4. We've not felt like being on a diet, so it was a very nice surprise. Doubt we'll do so well next week. Still slow but sure gets you there

Great work! Stick with it and if you have the same success next week you'll already be nearly half a stone down. Well done.

Thank you all very much. The loss was a terrific surprise, because we ate well and never felt hungry. We're not expecting much this week, just to keep on the straight and narrow, start to feel healthier and have more energy and take the weight loss as a by-product.

Had an afternoon in the garden yesterday. We moved house at the end of February and are just getting to know the garden. The new house came with a vegetable garden as well as flower and lawn. We're leaving the flower part alone, except for weeding. We'll give it a year to see what comes up and then go from there.
Neither of us are gardeners, but we're willing to give it a go. We planted some peppers (on the kitchen windowsill) and they have all come through so we have pricked out the strongest and re-potted them to get stronger so that , fingers crossed, we can plant them out later on. We had some fun yesterday afternoon.. We planted some spuds in a barrel, well a new dustbin actually, so look forward to seeing what happens.

I bought a bulb of garlic from the supermarket in March. I didn't use all the cloves so planted what was left over and they have started to shoot.

Bit stiff and sore today. Not surprising really is it?

Any diet that says that you need to go round feeling hungry is a bad diet.

Even when I did my big project - I never went round feeling hungry. There is absolutely no need for it. It would just make you feel miserable and like you want to count the days for it to end.

I'm pleased that you are seeing some great results to encourage you in your new lifestyle.

Well done on the gardening. Home grown veg tastes really good. We used to grow tomatoes and courgettes every year - plus often assorted other stuff too when we lived down south. The weather is too cold in Newcastle without a greenhouse and we do not have nearly as much garden space here anyway...

The bold is the smartest thing I have read on this board. My mother is dieting too because of health issues and that was exactly what her doc said.
The most important is how you and hubby FEEL (not only in terms of health, but also mood. I lost a daughter too and know how sh!tty days can be).

Having lived here 3 years now without a garden, we visit my parents at Saturdays they have a garden and a little inflatable pool -and we benifit from their harvest. That is really nice and takes the edges of the garden-desire.
I am alone with the children and I have to say that I am quite glad not having to move a lawn and other things, after all; they are 3, 4 and 5 years old now. Perhaps in a few years.

It will be 3 years on May26th Clarissa since we said goodbye to Beth, for the time being. A day before my husbands birthday, 5 days before mine and just 2 weeks before what would have been her 32nd birthday. We have no other children, she was beautiful.. golden brown hair, beautiful skin, huge grey eyes a perfect size 12 but so deeply autistic. It has been in someways, a very difficult 3 years and in others, we have the peace of mind that she is safe and happy now and although we are not church goers we know we will meet up again. We hate May and June

What a night! Didn't get off until 6am and then awake at 9.30. We had been so busy in the garden and the unusual amount of exercise resulted in leg cramps most of the night. I haven't had them since swimming so much as a teenager. I've stocked up with magnesium tabs, put a tablet of soap and a magnet... just to be sure at the foot of our bed and it will be an early night for the Dumpster tonight

Make sure you're getting enough water and salt - both of those help the body to deal with leg cramps adequately. Feel better soon, I'm sure they will pass shortly!

When you're exercising, even if it's just in the garden, a drink with a little bit of salt in it (I know it sounds terrible) is a good thing; like sports drinks (personally I just add a teaspoon of salt into a 2 liter of lemon-flavored water). We lose salt as we sweat so it's good to re-hydrate and replenish some of the salt lost.

You two have said truer words! As an old nurse I should have known that, but I was so engrossed in what I was doing the time just flew.

Yesterday, I upped my water intake, I was up piddling half the night:willy_nilly: but no cramp at all. Thanks for the salt tip Ms etc.

Haha, yeah I know the feeling. I had to get up three times last night after going to bed, which isn't normal for me (usually once is enough ;) ), but I worked out later in the evening and needed a lot of drink. And hey, it worked as a natural alarm clock this morning, woke up 5 minutes before my phone was set to blare at me. Worth it, though, to avoid those cramps, yes?

Absolutely worth it! At our age, my husband and I pass each other on the landing on our journeys to and from the loo

Sleeping like a child would be a bliss right.
If I do my exercise en the evenings I have a hard time falling a sleep and keep on waiking up the first couple of hours. Going to do the DVD this evening and am anxious how the night turns out; luckily we have a holiday tomorrow and are able to have slow morning.

LOL! My husband doesn't drink enough, so he doesn't get up in the middle of the night yet (he's going to be 41 in August), but it's coming someday. Hopefully it will convince him to stop teasing me about it ;)

Some people get cramps because of a lack of potassium. I know people that try to incorporate half a banana into their daily food plan to try to offset cramps.

If anyone has additional salt - they should be aware that salt often triggers water retention so the scales could go up - but that is nothing to do with fat increasing... I would hate for anyone to see an increase at the scales and not be aware of water retention...

yep. I'm a big fan of bananas (strange word to spell isn't... banana? You start off OK but there are so many ana's you don't know when to stop:smilielol5:) We have one mashed up on our weetabix in the mornings and this week I have been freezing them chopped then blitzing them in the food processor with a little skimmed milk until they are the consistency of soft ice cream... BLISS!

Isn't it funny how you get used to butter when you don't really need it? Baked beans on toast tastes no different with no butter on the toast. Mashed spuds are beautiful with a bit of skimmed milk substituted for the knob of butter. Why put it on chopped cabbage? A tad of pepper is all you need.
Tomatoes don't need to be fried in oil. A squirt of 1Cal and a dash of Balsamic makes them taste wonderful. The only thing that doesn't taste right is a roast potato if you dry roast it. We just can't get into that. We are lucky though, we have an Actifry and a small amount of olive oil roasts enough potatoes for a family. Nice for a treat and doen't do any harm if you only do it now and again.

Absolutely right. Those small changes add up to one huge change :)
