dumbell squats

i was just wondering if there is anything to dumbell squats?
good?
bad?
better or worse than barbell squats?
and if they are worth doing..what's the proper form.

thank you

I love DB squats. There are several variations. (Dumbbell Squat) <-- this is two weight squat. You can also perform DB squats holding one DB between your legs.

In addition to two legged squats you can perform single-leg squats.(Dumbbell Single Leg Squat)

They're no better or worse than dumbbell squats, only different.

The problem I can see with DB squats is the grip. I imagine your grip will suffer pretty quick if you're holding a weight that your legs find challanging.

For single leg squats they look pretty good though

Actually, your grip doesn't really go at all. When you're holding DB at your side, it's more of a problem, but if you hold a DB properly between your legs, your grip is barely affected. (This is a good view of it, but the weight is light). You can also try holding the DB with your palms facing up, weight resting on them.

i think barbell squats are better because when you use really high weights, its better to have the weight on your traps instead of having to worry about gripping the weight; the lift is meant to be done with a barbell, but dumbells work too

PB: While I don't disagree with what your saying, a center hold DB squat offers other benefits. It's not always about heavy lifts. I utilize the DB squat for higher rep endurance work, and for the added depth that can be achieved without pressuring my knees and hips.

Barbell squats are great for what they do. DB squats have their place, not as a replacement, but as an addition.
