Dumbell bench press problems

Well I tried dumbell bench press today with 50lb dumbells (my bench max is 185) and the results were not good. A few reps into it my left shoulder just gave out and i had to take some more pain to the shoulder to make the weight avoid my face.

I guess my left shoulder must have some underlying injury, it has always felt a little odd when doing military press and other shoulder stuff, but never just gave out on me. It didnt hurt too bad other than when it happened, so i tried agan with alot less weight like 30s and did a few sets easy, but then it randomly happened again. so i have no idea what causes the shoulder to act up like that, i pretty much just loose control of it, while the right shoulder is fine the whole time and has no trouble with the weight.

Does anyone know what sort of injury can cause this, because I have no recollection of ever hurting my shoulder. Now it is getting kind of sore and I cant lay on it without pain, but right afterward I was still able to do shoulder press type of stuff. Thanks ahead of time for any comments on this.

u probably shouldnt do shoulder press after your shoulder crapping out on you like that, and go see a doctor or something, because i have no idea whats going on with that.

Could it be that your rotar cuffs are too weak? I started out at 40lb dumbells and slowly worked my way up, but wtf?! just gave out that aint right could have pinched something bettr go get some advice from a pro is my guess

Some people should not do overhead pressing...you might be one of those people. Start working your rotator cuffs. But it's impossible to diagnose a problem on a forum.

yea I am trying to get a doctor appointment for this week before I lift again. What are good exercises to build up rotator cuff strength? Its just wierd thought because my left side is only slightly weaker so I am pretty sure there is some underlying problem too, hopefully I will find that out soon with a doctor, but they never give me good answers.

Evo is right the forum isn't the place to get a diagnosis, and the doc appointment is what you need, on that note, I dislocated my shoulder years back and tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder. Like a hero I did very little rehab for it, and at one point went to the gym to "strengthen" my weakened shoulder. Doing incline bench with some moderate weight DB's my shoulder gave out and WAMMO I took it in the face.

Couple moments later and a few "Are you all right dude?"'s I left with my pride between my legs.

I know of one decent rotator cuff exercise, and the key is VERY low weights till you get it working.

has some pictures, I do #1 standing up, rather than laying down. Again remember LOW weight, if it hurts stop... go lighter.

Good luck.

yea, i need to switch of to my left hand...

anyway my dad tore his rotator cuff and gave me the little tests that the doctors give you, and those didnt give me any pain at all. I got a doctors appointment for friday, hopefully he will see whats wrong and not send me to someone else. it is only a few motions that bring pain, i just really hope it doesnt take too long to heal, i was hittin a good groove in the gym. Thanks for the rotator cuff exercises.

I had that prob when i started, mainly with shoulder press. i found that it was bad when i went down too far so i only went down till my triceps were paralel with the floor and instead of having my hands in a line like this

- 0 - I twisted my hand like this \ 0 / i hope that makes sence.

Went to the doctor today and he said that it was just dislocated, still doesnt feel good but I think I just have to go to physical therapy for a few weeks, so it doesnt seem as bad as I thought it might be. I will definately let me shoulders catch up to my other strengths when i get back in the gym. thanks for the input.

IDK what ahppened to ya, but my friend can dislocate his arm on demand lol, hes dumb as hell, gunna screw his shoulder up one day
