Drex Gets Focused: An Essay on Shenanigans

8/27/08

Ran 7.11 miles outside, 55:09, 7:46 min/mile.

Rest day? Cooler weather? (was 75 degrees with 78% humidity, but was cloudy with a good breeze) Combo maybe. I didn't go out pushing that hard. I am really surprised by how fast this went with how easy I was running. I think I might learn a thing or two over the next 4 weeks.

Looking forward to hearing about your brick Focus.

Question: (Hopefully FF will chime in on this one.)

My training schedule has me doing a 10 mile long run the weekend before the marathon. Would it be a bad idea to replace the 10 mile run with a shorter, higher intensity 10k race? The race would be 8 days before the marathon.

My dad is planning on doing both. I am sure he would like it if I ran both. I am reluctant to run a race that close to the marathon.

Training

Biked 10.0 miles in 30.0 mins @ 20.0 mph
Ran 4.05 miles in 33.5 mins @ 8.27 mm.

Thoughts

lulz almost PR'ing on my run, lulz enjoying it immensely

lulz gaining 3 lbs on 6 weeks of strict v dieting and then losing 3 lbs in 2 weeks of constantly stuffing my face (averaging over 3500 calories/day, versus 1600/day on the v diet)

Is it just me or is there something seriously wrong with my physiology.

I shall make this brick thing a Wednesday regular. Is fun.

WoW! Very nice on the run, but amazing on the bike. Are you going to be looking into some triathlons?

Yeah, eventually. I figure why not. In a couple weeks I'mma use that site sparrow suggested to start playing with my swim. Fairly sure I'm still a very strong swimmer, though. I had a torrid love affair with water in my youth. Never really had any formal training, but never really seemed to need any, from what I recall.

I love swimming. <3 Only thing is, with this half-marathon training and all the other stuff, and school, and blah blah blah... not sure where to fit it in. Except on Sunday, my only current rest day.

I suppose I can rest when I'm dead, right? ;) Or maybe do it nice and easy after the long run on sat. But man will I be hungry when I get home. Like, kill and eat the first person that crosses my path and so much as looks at me funny hungry.

Thoughts

Dear Lord,

Would you please tone down the heaping of blessings upon me? Seriously, I don't mean to be ungrateful, but I don't know how much more I can take. You may kill me with goodness before the week is through. I realize that, being omniscient and all, you already know this, but uhm, I don't want to die. So, yeah. Also, there are people who might benefit so much more from this massive infusion of your holy light. People like Jessica Simpson, Tiny Tim, Tanya Harding and Big Tom. Okay, good talk.

Your victim,
D

Focus, you're quite the stud, like Drex.

Doubt it. I am a colt at best. But really more like a mule, haha.

I am back in the 180s, though. And I think I've figured out what was salting my game! I'd share but it's specific to me and took a whole battery of tests by a TEAM of endocrinologists, hahaha. The idea is that I should (and am, so far, even though I haven't stopped eating wellllll above maintenance) now start dropping fat like a joke as my otherwise meta genetics reassert themselves in the theoretical absence of what I've taken to calling "The Contaminant". XD

So, maybe with a couple years of dedication, I'll be able to quietly take the compliment instead of babbling on like this. :p

It's a boy!

I haven't mentioned it yet, but we are expecting our second child. We went in for an ultrasound this morning and my wife is about 20 weeks along and 99% sure it is a boy. He was able to get a good picture, so pretty certain it is a boy.

Original due date was 1/7/09, ultrasound estimated 1/19/09.

Focus: You'll always babble, but I love you anyways.

Drex: Congratulations! But, if the ultrasound tech is only 99% and not 100% sure that your baby is a boy, it sounds like he is gonna have a small penis.

Well, when he was showing us he said "Here is one leg, here is the second leg and here is the third leg." So, 99% chance it is a boy & 1% chance it comes out with 3 legs.

Today was probably the funniest day in the gym ever. And the walk home... hahaha. But I don't have time.

It appears the rate at which I am gaining strength has accelerated rather than slowed down as I transitioned back into a strict deficit.... I suppose there are worse problems to have. ;)

Nice job on the PB Focus!

Babbly babbly times

Nice job yourself, there, Drexinator.

Maybe I forgot to mention, that brick I did, it was indoors. So, the bike was stationary. Which I'm pretty sure means it wasn't nearly as impressive as what you do most days of the week. ;)

So on Hal's schedule today is 5-k "race" day. But I'm not gonna waste my time on that, I don't think. I figure since week 4 (last week) was 5m, week 6 (this week) is 5k race and week 8 (next week) is 8m, it would make sense to run either 6.5 or 7 today. And I think I'll do 7 today so I can bump week 8 to 9m and week 10 to 11m. Then taper as planned on week 12 (it's a 4 mile run early in the week, then a 2, then consecutive days of straight rest - which in my case will of course not be actual rest but strength training days, and some cross probably).

Also, I was re-reading doggcrapp's stuff and it occurs to me that I am being very retarded with the bench press. So, if my current 5 rep range strat doesn't work, then next time I get in there, I do something other than bb flat bench. Smith bench, I'm thinking. I know, I know, is dumb and bodybuilder'ish, but I have.. a feeling. Also gonna try it at just two "working sets" after a bunch of grease sets and maybe even some of this "intense stretching". If that doesn't show a big improvement each week, then I'll swap out to decline. Then incline. And if that doesn't work, weighted push-ups! Avoiding having to do those should be all the motivation I need. Also this rotating of exercises will serve another function, which is to give my wrists a bit of a break. I didn't mention it, but they've been somewhat broken for weeks. Slowly getting better, and still more than functional ("functional" - not so painful as to collapse onto the floor, curl up into the fetal position, and sob like a schoolgirl who skinned her knee), but they're definitely hurt. In conclusion, experimenting is fun. :D
