Does taking a "break" help build muscle mass quicker?

A few weeks ago I didn't go to the gym for about a week because I started feeling shortness of breath after going for a run one day. Then after trying to work out a few days later it got really bad. Went to the doctor a couple days later and it turned out to be just some crazy bad allergies, I get them bad every year but never like this. Everything was fine, so she precribed me an inhaler to use anyhow. I didn't work out for about a week as I was worried about the whole shortness of breath thing and didn't want to exert myself. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but it seemed like I gained a little extra muscle mass, particularly in my arms. I had changed my work out up some about a week before the shortness of breath thing kicked in, would that have anything to do with it? Or am I just crazy and imagining myself getting bigger?

"but it seemed like I gained more mass in my arms"

this means nothing. MEASURE THEM GUNS. I'm serious...You're basing unfounded observations on uncorrelated data.

If you were at the point of overtraining, yes a week off would do you good.
