Diary of MNexercisegirl

Hey, I know 100% how you feel. Took me a long time to overcome that reluctance to approach - and the general feeling of intimidation. A lot of "didn't wants" - as in I didn't want some random guy to think I was flirting, didn't want to look like an idiot, didn't want to be on the receiving end of stupid advice (ok, that's inevitable:rolleyes: with guys in the weight room). On the positive side, if you show up day after day just doing your thing (just like a guy:) ) after a while most of them stop eyeing you like either an alien invader or a piece of candy, and you start to get a sense of who's cool and who's not. Then it gets to be really more fun because you've got another little pool of people to bounce training ideas and tips around with.

I was only kidding. :p

Trust me, I know it can be intimidating for a female in the average gym. I give you a lot of respect for what you are doing. You are lifting using a "real" program, most would be afraid to leave the machines.

So trust me, I am proud of you.
Thanks Steve. That really means a lot coming from you, because I really am taking this a lot more serious than before and your opinion really does matter to me because I have a ton of respect for you! Whoa, that was a really run-on sentence. But you know what I mean. I'll let you know for sure when I do take that big step!

My "didn't wants" are the same as yours. Most of the time, well all of the time, when I get to the gym, I do my thing and leave. I'm not big on conversation because I don't have that much time anyway. Anyhow, I'm get the courage to go up to someone one day, until then I'm just gonna be "that one asian girl" who lifts heavy.:p

Did my cardio today. I'm still not getting as high of a HR. That very first time of doing HIIT I got up to 170, 90% of my HR and lately it's only gotten as high as 166, my anaerobic threshold. Well my session of cardio today wasn't as intense. I did start doing 8 mph for 1 minute with 30 sec at 6 mph towards the end. That was killer, but still the HR only got up to 166, max. I'm hoping that Thursday will be nice outside so I can get a good run in. I have this great hill by the house that would be perfect for some good intervals.

As for food, my goal this week is to try to get over 100 grams of protein. So far I've done it yesterday and today. Today though I entered all my food and only got around 1200 calories with over 100 grams of protein (to even get 100 g I had to have ground turkey for breakfast, chicken breast for lunch and salmon for dinner.) Lots of protein and I was full. I grabbed an extra serving of cornbread and a piece of hard candy and got up to 1500 with my macros still balancing out. I've had to cut down a lot on the amount of fruit though. I used to eat like 3-4 different kinds of fruit a day. Now it's about 2 which is probably just as good.

Tomorrow, I've got to get a hold of a trainer to get my BF tested. Lifting at the gym tomorrow.

Wow, you're doing really well. I think you should go ahead and ask one of the gym fellas to spot you.

Hey, Thanks! I know, I really should, and I will. I will. It'll be a goal during this journey of mine. When I start lifting a little more heavy I'll need someone there to spot me. Maybe next month...hehe:)

Ah,yes, this is how the addiction starts...it seems so innocent in the beginning...first you'll be happy to get in your 100g of protein, then you'll start thinking, "okay, how can I do that and get the sat fat down"...then you'll wonder..."hmm, now how 'bout that fiber"...and before you know it you'll be staring at a measly pack of saltine crackers thinking "now how will this fit into my numbers for the day?":D

Kuddos to you for being there! I'm still working out in the privacy of a public park ;)

You'll find who the guys are who are not there for flirting, oggling or any of that...

I wish we could clone Steve, that would make it easy :)

That doesn't seem like a BAD addiction...:D

Yeah, having like 100 Steves would be so much easier...LOL!

Funny

So during lunch today, I headed to the gym to get my BF tested and get my lifting in. BF isn't so great, it's higher than I thought but I'll be working on getting it much lower. The PT there told me that it takes about 6-8 weeks of consistent training and watching what you eat to see some results. I'll be patient and wait until then. But...

All this talk about getting the courage to get someone to spot me must have done something to the fairy gods at the gym because I was approached by 2 males today during my workout. One must have noticed that I was getting my body fat done and asked how my assessment was. We made some conversation. I think I initiated it first by asking if he was done using the squat machine. Anyhow the next person came up to me while I was doing my last set of bench press and wanted to know if I wanted a spot! :D I didn't, although in my last set I was pushing it. So whaddaya know? They really don't bite your head off, steve. Next time I go, I'll have maybe 2 people to help me.

My workout
Squats: 1x5 95lbs, 5x5 105lbs. Increase of 5 pounds since Monday
Bench Press: 1x5 65lbs, 4x5 75lbs
Deadlift: 2x5 75lbs, 3x5 85lbs
Pulldown: 1x5 55lbs, 4x5 60lbs

BF: 31% *blah*

Maybe I told you this before, but it is just so cool to see a woman doing squats and deadlifts! You can ask me for a spot any time!

YAY for getiing your bodyfat %...as much fun as it can be to see scale numbers go down (and as frustrating as it can be to see them go up), shifts in bodyfat % and measurements are the only "numbers" that really mean anything to me anymore.

Awww, thanks Tom! I saw your post about HIIT and I now know that I am not doing it correctly. I'll have to try HIIT on the spinner on Thursday. I'll let you know how that goes tomorrow.

Thanks! I do my measurements tomorrow so hopefully I'll see some results there. My clothes are fitting a little more loose. *crossing fingers*

Don't sweat the body fat reading. It is just a number, and it WILL improve.

I am glad the 2 guys acknowledged you in the gym. FYI, I have never seen a guy turn down a female asking for a spot. Really.

I saw you mention "squat machine" up above.

You are not doing your squats on the smith machine, are you?

No no no no no no! I didn't know what to call it. But it's just the barbell and the frame. Smith machine is WAY too easy and it feels funny too. I had tried that a couple of times in the past when the barbell was in use and I didn't like it at all.

Nice Avi BTW:D

OK, good. I just call it the rack. :)

I have problems with the smith machine. I think all gyms should get rid of them and replace them with squat racks.

Thanks. :)

Hiit

I've been reading...A LOT. So much that I stay up not knowing it was past midnight. Last night it was about HIIT. I totally know now that I'm not doing it right. I'm not going all out at all on the treadmill. Since it's getting nice out, I'm going to try it outside hopefully tonight on that hill I mentioned earlier. I'm hoping to puke. :p

Ahhh, hills are fun! I use them quite a bit when I am in cutting mode.
