Diary of an Overweight Coach

Did not make it into the gym yesterday, was called in to stock-take the medical shed rather than today as planned.

Had first training day of the season son 1.5 hours of running around chasing a horde of kids ranging from 7-10 years.

was supposed to be assigned to U10s but there are low numbers in that age group and other ages are short coaches so it looks like a bit of a reshuffle and mixing a couple of age groups. The chaos in pre season irritates me a bit because I like to have a basic plan organised specific to the age I am coaching.

My sons team was also short of a couple of players with some players changing sport. on the other hand our ladies team which I do the Strength and conditioning coaching for is at the point of turning away players.

On my feet most of the day, was informed by hubby this afternoon the his football team is playing a "Friendly" tonight and that I may be needed. When these 2 teams play there is never anything friendly about it. With it being pre season I don't have a copy of the key for the medical shed (Should have got a copy after the stock-take) so will have to rely in my own personal kit and hope there are no broken bones or other serious injuries while I don't have access to some stuff, even though my personal kit fills the entire boot of the car lol.

Rain, Mud and 2 testosterone filled teams of men that dislike each other and who have had only 1 pre season training session after a 6 month long off-season usually = Lots of injuries good thing I have the Ambulance still on speed dial after last season.

The Joys of being the senior medic lol

food has been ok but may not stay that way depending on how the evening pans out.

still more rain today and yesterday, even my English hubby is sick of the rain lol

food ok again today, no training except a few iron mikes.

Made it into the gym this morning and managed a reasonable bench press session, by having a spotter I can trust I was able to get in a triple at 80kg (176lb) RAW at the end of my other sets. not going to bother listing everything because nobody reads this except me lol back felt good after reverse bench with elevated feet.

The sun is out (for a short time at least) so I may be able to get some mowing done in an hour or so if the ground dries out enough for the mower to not sink in the mud.

was asked today if I was going to go for the National Bench Press record this year, but with my run of injuries it is not looking likely.

Thanks Amy, it is good to see a friendly face back here :)

Have spent most of the day in the car today, and will probably get a sub par training session in tomorrow morning because I will be showing a friend around the gym who is swapping away from the chain gym she was going to.

lunch could have been better today but the steak and kidney pie did taste good. Planning a meal of lambs liver tonight with steamed veg on the side :D

This afternoon I hope to run through some new GK drills this afternoon because I have a new coaching book to pick up from the PO.

Steak and kidney pie sounds good.....can't have salad all the time. :p

You know, my brother is REALLY into power lifting and fitness in general and he will almost always warn people away from chain gyms.

Chain Gyms = EVIL :smash:

With all the problems lately my eating has slipped a little more than I would have liked, so time to give things a little bit of a boost with a few weeks of PSMF before getting back to my dietitian prepared diet.

starting to feel the ill effects of eating the pie today :banghead: eating stuff that contain wheat when your allergic to wheat is a bad option no matter how good it tasted at the time.

Is this the PSMF you're talking about? I'm new around these parts, so forgive my ignorance. I'll read more about this, as it looks interesting.

I'm not allergic to gluten to a great degree, but having dropped it (mostly) since Jan 5th, I've noticed I feel considerably better. It may be forever a small part of my diet.

Yes sort of, my protein intake is based on my LBM (Lean Body Mass) and there is a bit more to it than in that article. The calorie intake is not much lower than my specially prepared diet, just a few less carbs which will throw my body into ketosis. The up side is that the stuff cut out of my normal diet is mostly foods I have some form of allergy to. One important thing when doing PSMF is to lift heavy to stop muscle loss.

kept it light at the gym with relatively few sets and exercises, spent most of my time showing friend around and teaching her how to do some of the exercises.

Treadmill
Crunches
Planks
Hamstring Bridge (Vibrogym)
calf pulses
Leg Press (600 kg)

I am coaching this afternoon (football) then I have to drive down the coast tonight.

I must say, I love your "light" workouts. I try not to compare because we're at radically different places with radically different aims, but sometimes I can't help it!

You know this, but you can only do what you can do- re the food, just pick up where you left off. I hope the ill effects don't last too long.

LOL I think it is human nature to compare ourselves to others even when we should know better. Although I usually find myself comparing my lifts to what the men are lifting :leaving: which I shouldn't do, it embarrasses the young ones to much :D

when it comes down to it the only competition that matters is yourself. for example looking at leg press today, it is 130kg under my max, I am happy with that today but if I had of been aiming for a heavy day or a max lift day, I would have been very disappointed.

Also when comparing myself to my previous max lifts I have to take into consideration that I am getting older and I have permanent injuries I have to work around.

Feeling some slight DOMS this morning, If I had of been able to do active recovery last night I would have been ok. Oh well time for some active recovery on the bike this morning so I will be back to normal tomorrow if not I will have to consider heading to the beach tomorrow.
