Derrick's ongoing journey

Yesterday I swam only 700 yards because a class was starting soon.

More than I can swim!

I hope to join the MMA club in my area today or Saturday.

This sounds like so much fun! There is a Muay Thai Boxing gym that I always wanted to join but it is soooo expensive. I think when I get more in shape, I'll join so I don't feel like a douche.

Maybe I should try drinking 3 gallons of water at dinner? :biggrinjester:

Yeah, you better be kidding... that's like 11 .25 LITERS!! You would drown yourself!

pretty funny! I would name my scale the same!!!

Destination 189

Well tonight's workout was short because our friends invited us over for dinner. They just moved back into town after being gone for 5 years. It's nice to have them back.

I also talked to the MMA club today. They want me to show up Monday evening. So that will be my first night of hopefully a new journey. Then maybe I can start a new thread titled "My journey to the UFC." LOL

This morning was the best cardio "workout" of my life.

I ate horrible last night. Another freaking birthday party! :cuss: I will not go to another party this summer. PERIOD.
So I was mad at myself for eating bad again and I felt really good this morning so I decided to do a sprint triathlon workout.

I swam 900 yards, got out of the pool and went to spin class where we biked approximately 14 miles and then I immediately went to the treadmill and jogged 2.30 miles at 6.4 mph. The whole thing took me less than 1 hour and 15 minutes. I had 1 hour and 6 minutes in my heart rate zone and that does not include the swim because I can not keep my chest strap from falling off when I do flip turns.

I wish I had a workout this good every week. I would be well on my way to becoming a better triathlete.

This morning Tanita said:

hey sometimes it takes eiether feeling totally guilty or going up a pound when you ate bad to kick your workout up a notch again.... i know i certainly am guilty of getting into a comfy work out at times. Glad to see you got a kick butt work out in today!!!!

You will be to 189 in no time!!!!!! Just stick with it and ask your wife if she will help by getting naked and making you chase her around the house....

HEHEHEHE. Have a GREAT saturday!!

Destination 189

LOL Maybe if I cleaned the whole house she would agree to that. Cleaning is one of her love languages. LOL

This morning Tanita says:
196.5
20%

I also want to note that my stomach measurement is 37-3/4. That is just 1/4 inch away from its smallest measurement. I actually think I look more muscular than I did a couple months ago. Maybe I have gained a little muscle? I'm sure I have. I have been busting my butt at the gym, just not eating in a "caloric deficit" all the time. Maybe I'm due for pictures?

I plan on lifting upper body this morning. I was not able to do so on Thursday or yesterday. I always try to do upper body at least twice per week. Today is my last chance this week. My weeks start on Mondays. ;)

Destination 189

So Sunday I lifted upper body and had a great workout. I have definitely got stronger lately.

Yesterday I swam 2000 yards in the morning. In the evening I tried Muay Thai at the local MMA club. It was great until the last 10 minutes. We did some core drills and I about passed out. It was hell. But I liked it and I think I am going to join. I have blisters on my feet and toes that have already torn open so I may not be able to run this week or go back to Muay Thai until next week.

This morning Tanita says:
197.0
18%

P.S.
I had my wife try the scale because we know exactly what her body fat percentage is. She had it taken under water and with a 5 site skin fold. Both of those methods said 16%. She has since lost 7 more lbs of mostly fat so she has to be 16% or less, probably 15 or 14 percent. Anyway, I also had her try it in the morning when she first woke up. It said she was 121.5 and 20% so once again I strongly believe the scale reads about 5% high as compared to the underwater and skin fold methods. So that still puts me around 13 to 15 percent. So as long as I take my readings consistently in the mornings, I can see over time if my body fat is dropping. I think when I get to the point where the scale reads 15% in the morning, I will be very close to 10% realistically. Also, it does appear the scale is some what consistent each morning as the readings only appear to fluctuate no more than 2%. Now, if I step on later in the day, forget it. Way too much fluctuation.

OOOH, Muay Thai! I am so jealous... that sucks you took a beating but at the same time awesome! Maybe this will kick start your continued fat loss??

I am thinking you are prolly right... im going through that right now too because of lifting and what not... i put on about a pound and a half.... and have been sticking with my diet and working out with a decent frequency... so im not sure what is up other than possibly some muscle gain?

You are both right! Muscle is the best!

Hi girls. Thanks for continuing to support me even though I am not dropping weight. Trust me, I am working my freaking a-s-s off. I just need to do better at dinner time and after. I eat great all day until 6pm. Then I think I eat good food for dinner but I eat too much. Finally, I end up eating some kind of desert afterwards or cereal before bed. It's just not going to cut it at this stage of the game.

Today I can honestly say was the most challenging day of exercise in my life since high school. Perhaps ever. This morning I jogged 3.1 miles with the Fleetfeet running club. Then I had a Power Sandwhich, a cup of fruit and a cup of coffee at Panera. THEN...here's where it gets insane...I went and did 2 HOURS of boxing at the MMA club. It was supposed to "only" be 1.5 hours but I guess the instructor was feeling extra abusive today. I thought the Muay Thai was hard on Monday. It was but this was insane. We were not allowed to rest at all. My heart rate had to be between 160 and 190 the entire 2 hours. It was very mentally challenging also. There is a lot of thinking involved with boxing. I did get a complement at the very end though, which made the 2 hours somewhat worth it. He told me I have hard punches and he was surprised I didn't have much experience.

Just for the heck of it I weighed myself when I got home. I knew I lost a ton of water weight. I weighed 193.5. I'm sure I just drank 3 lbs of water though. LOL

And for the best part of the day. My wife and I found out this morning that our little girl is going to be a big sister. :) I know its early but I'm ok with posting it here. I have faith it will be another healthy pregnancy. My wife and I are very happy. The funny thing is, my daughter's due date was April 12th AND this baby is also due April 12th...just 4 years later.

Well I weighed myself this morning.
198.5 lbs
20%

The thing is, I think I actually look more toned than I did when I was 193 just about a month ago. I really ought to get some skin fold calipers. I'm pretty sure I have put on some muscle and perhaps even dropped my body fat percentage. My overall goal when I started was 10% body fat. I have just always thought 189 lbs would get me there. If I can get there at 199 then that is fine too. I am thinking I am around 13 to 15% though.

So my wife weighed 123 the day she found out she was pregnant. Last time she weighed at least 145 when she first got pregnant. We were joking around about how long it will take her to get back to 123 once the baby is born next year. Maybe she can join this site at that time. :D

This morning I swam 1000 yards to loosen up. I am still really sore from Saturday. Read post above.

Congratulations on the pregnancy! That's awesome...each child truly is a blessing that has been given us. I'll pray for a healthy pregnancy for mom and baby!

Hey Derrick! I totally agree that you most likely are gaining muscle and I bet you look great!

OH MY GOSH!! That is so awesome about your wife being pregnant! Was this planned, unexpected, details!!!

Destination 189

Thanks for the congrats. This was definitely planned but it has been in the works for almost a year, sort of. We started to try for pregnancy last September but my wife hurt her back so we stopped. We were lucky she did not get pregnant that month because it turned out she had a disk that was 70% ruptured and needed surgery. Maybe we tried too hard? LOL

All jokes aside, she had surgery in December and then we wanted to wait a few months to make sure her back was completely healed. We also didn't want a December baby so we waited until May. We were unsuccessful in May, which was good again because she had to have a CAT scan due to kidney stones. All the stones are small so we got the ok in July. Third time was the charm.

This will probably be our last so we are hoping for a boy but if God gives us a girl we will love her the same. Whatever we are supposed to have is fine with us.

:eek2: OMG!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

..that really is EXCITING news!!! :D!!...a new baby daughter!!...That's an Aries for you!!!...my bf's birthday is April 11 and My little sis is also an ARIES!! :D!! ...honestly....other than SAGITARRIUS DECEMBER babies.....they are the BEST!!! hahahah ;) **Wink WInk***

....As far as the eating....TAKE CONTROL of yourself MAN!....like you said...at this stage of the game..you are working out like a maniac and if that isn't doing it ...then you know...EXACTLY what you need to get there...;)!!!

....BELIEVE IT OR NOT...I USED TO TAKE MUAY THAI KICKBOXING for like 6 months a couple years back!!!...:sifone:....yup in my GANGSTER DAYS!! hahahaha :coolgleamA:....I was one of the two chicks at the gym, and literally I know exactly what you mean, when you look at the clock and you have spent like 2 -2 1/2 hours there!....shit...sometimes you wonder if the instructors know that ONE's WHOLE LIFE doesn't revolve around the studio there, cause they NEVER seem to want to let you go home!...:ack2:

...I really did have a great experience with it...and I did get into the low 140's....the problem with it was their Hours of Operation...I just couldn't handle it that the instructor would roll out of bed and open at 11am...when it said 10am...and would keep you WAY longer than wanted sometimes!....We would work on 3 minute intervals with 1 minute rest period on a bell...like the REAL CHAMPION boxers use! ...THAT SHIT WORKED YOU!...and I have never EVER been pressured to do more abs and jump rope than there in addition to the kicking, sparring, and punching combos!...They made me a SUPER JUMPING EXPERT!hahaha

...I'm really glad that you enjoy it there!...It all makes sense now....now wonder your body is sculpting as it is!!...PROPS!!!!!!

......regardless if you drank the water weight or not....GREAT JOB on BULKING UP!!! !

YOur MMA stuff sounds soo cool! I want to do it too! Yours and Alta's explanation of it all sounds so hard core! I want to be a tough chick that could kick your ass!

Destination 189

Hi girls! Thanks for stopping by. :)

The MMA stuff is kick ass but very hard. The club I found is what I would call "the real deal." If I can go twice a week for a year, I think I will become a confident fighter. At first I want to do only Muay Thai and Boxing. Striking is my strength so I want to hone those skills first. Then I want to add Brazilian Jui Jitsu and really train hard in that art. Someone skilled at BJJ can defeat a good striker most of the time so I have always believed that art to be most important. If you also happen to be good at striking then more power to you.

I also want to work towards an Ironman triathlon. I am giving myself 5 years. My long term goal is to become an Ironman triathlete and a skilled fighter. I would love to sit here and say I am confident I can step into the ring someday and win fights but I don't know if that is realistic. I am basically a 31 year old beginner. Guys don't start martial arts at 31 and end up in the top 1%. So for now, my goal is to simply become skilled enough to protect myself and others from the other 99%.

It's been a busy work week for me and not a lot of exercise. Not the best eating either. I have no idea what my weight is. No scale right now. Hopefully I have held steady.

Last night I jogged 4 freaking miles on the treadmill in about 45 minutes. I would jog for about 5 minutes at 6.5 mph and then walk for a couple minutes or so. Then tonight after dinner I jogged 3.0 miles outside in 28:00 exactly. I was happy with that time because it was a hilly route. My heart rate avg was 175 and my max heart rate was 187 or 99%. I burned 505 calories according to my watch. My lungs were really burning afterwards. I feel great right now though. My weight is 196.5 so it appears I held steady this week.
