Deck's Diary

Wow sounding like really great progress - 9lbs!!!
I'm really interested in the fasting idea but was thinking more of 5 days and 2 days fasting (under 500 cals). I'm not sure how 2-8pm window would fit my work schedule etc... Might give it a go at some stage though. How did you decide on that window of time?

Hey Jay

Basically I settled on a 6 hour eating window as I wanted to extend the basic fasting period. Normally people who do IF use an 8 hour fasting window, but obviously the longer you fast, the longer your body uses fat for energy instead of food.

Some people use a 4 hour eating window, then fast for 20 hours. It all comes down to what results you want, and personal preference.

With regards to the times that I eat, that’s just because it’s convenient for me. You decide when and how long your window is; keep in mind though the maximum eating window for IF is 8 hours. 12-8 is popular for beginners, just don’t eat your carbs towards the end of your window. If you’re looking for quicker results and you can honestly say your disciplined enough to not eat outside your window, I’d recommend trying a 6 hour window.

Remember, you’re not starving yourself. Get about 1600cal a day inside a 6 or 8 hour window and that shit will just melt off. I’m working out at 12pm each day, then waiting til 2pm to eat. This way, I have an hour between 1pm and 2pm where my body is using fat for energy during and after my workout.

If you want any more questions answering I’d be happy to help.

Thanks Deck - really useful. So this is your pattern everyday? I might be able to do a 2-8 or 1-9 window as that would allow me to have lunch at work and a dinner at home. What liquids do you have during the fasting period - is it just water or would I be allowed to have a couple of cups of tea? That will be the hardest thign to give up!

At the moment, the 2 fasting days a week that I do are 500 cals or less for the 24 hours and I eat around 1800 cals the other days. The 500 cals I tend to use on tea, small fruit snacks and an omlette for breakfast.

Yeah this has been my pattern everyday for going on 3 weeks now.

There are loads of different methods to IF. The people that tend to do 2 fasting days a week normally do a 24 hour fast on each of those days, but that's not really for me. I need to have lunch at some point during work or I can't concentrate.

The idea with fasting is that you don't consume any calories outside your window. You're safe with a water, black coffee, (no sugar only low cal sweeteners) green tea, diet coke (although fizzy drinks generally make me bloated, but technically they won't break your fast).

Tea I'm not sure about; I love tea, it's the first thing I have when my window opens, but i stay away during fasting. Reason being i cant drink it without lots of milk and two sugars. - If you reckon you could bear to drink tea with 0 cal sweeteners and a tablespoon of skimmed milk, then you'd be fine with that. Try and adjust to black coffee, it's bitter at first but once you get used to it, it's a godsend in the morning.

1800 a day is good; may i ask what your maintenance level of calories is? Mine is roughly 2100, so i subtracted 500.

Merry Friday everyone!

Hey what are these weight tracker things in your signatures? I want one!

I weighed myself this morning, I'm down to 186lbs! I was 198 on December 31st (2012), so hopefully i can pass the 1st mark by the end of the month.

I'm getting my required calories each day, counting my proteins, carbs and fats, sticking to my eating window and working out 6 days a week. On top of that my mood has consistently improved, I'm more focused at work and it's easier to study at home.

Also, jjay, if you get chance to reply to the question in my last post then drop me a msg
