Deanna's Diary

Hello all!

After lurking around the boards for quite sometime, I've made the decision to start my own thread. Since my attempts at weightloss have been unsuccessful before, I figure maybe things will go differently if I have something to keep me accountable!

I'll try to post every day, or every other day, but who knows how that will go. I will try my best, though! I'll start off with these default questions:

What is your current height and weight? I'm 5'3 1/2 (when you're this short, you count halves) and I'm about 175. I can't be 100% positive though, on account of both scales I own give me different weights, and neither of them produce the same number as the doctor's.
If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?IDEALLY, 125. But for now, I'm aiming for 140-135.
At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? My goal weight. When I eat healthy and exercise, I lose weight pretty quickly, so it's entirely possible.
Why do you want to lose weight? Multiple reasons I will post in a later thread.
Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? Nope, not really.
What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? My friends and I always go out to eat, just for the heck of it or someone's birthday. It's so easy to go overboard. Another obstacle is definitely my busy schedule. It can be so hard to find time to get to the gym, especially on weekends.
Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? I eat too much and don't get enough exercise, isn't it the same with most people? I've always loved food, and when I get a craving for something, I feel uneasy until I can actually eat it. Growing up, I was never really involved in sports. Everything I did try, I ended up quitting, so there was never much physical activity.
What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Making time to go to the gym, even if it means cancelling out something else to fit it in. Another thing is to have my meals planned out ahead of time, so I'm not scrambling around to find something decent to eat.
Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? A bad dental problem. I went to the dentist to get a simple tooth problem fixed, and ended up with an infection. The lymph nodes by my jaw were so swollen, I couldn't barely open my mouth. Needless to say, I couldn't eat anything, which resulted in a fast weightloss. I did manage to lose a pant size that I kept off, as well as 5 out of the 10 pounds I lost that week.
Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? For that particular time I mentioned above, easy: I regained the ability to move my mouth. In general, however I haven't been able to lose weight because I can never manage to go to the gym on a steady basis. That, and not being able to reduce my calorie and fat intake.<
What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? I can't really think of anything ..
Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? Definitely, if it increased my chances of losing and keeping off the weight.
Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? Most of the time. I usually make pizza, with dough or English muffins, or really anything I can find. Sometimes I liked to order out and get a ham and cheese sub or a meatball sub.
How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? Around once every two weeks or so. We usually go to Uno's, Chilis, or Margarita's, where I usually always get a side caesar salad and a chicken quesadilla. Unless I'm at Uno's, which I will replace a quesadilla with their flat bread cheese and tomato pizza :D
What are your three favorite foods? Pizza, quesadillas, and caesar salads (if you can't already tell). I also have a soft spot for anything sweet, like cookies, cake, brownies, pie, rice krispie treats...
What are your three favorite restaurants? Bugaboo Creek, Chilis, and Uno's
What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Get more protein! I never get enough, and always have too much fat and carbs. I can also eat less and swap bad things with healthy alternatives.
If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? I'd be so much more confident and do things I wouldn't do at this weight.
Do you eat when you are not hungry? A lot of the time I do, like when I'm bored. Especially if there's something delicious around that we usually don't have, I feel the need to seize the opportunity ):
Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Occasionally
Do you hide your food or eat in secret? Not really.
Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Usually I eat when I don't have anything else to do. When I'm out and about I usually forget about eating for hours until I realize I'm starving. At home, though, my mind constantly wonders to food.
Do you eat as a reward? I don't usually.
Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? YES! In fact, that's usually ALWAYS where I eat. Er, is that bad? :p
What do you normally eat for a meal? For breakfast, usually an English muffin with peanut butter or cheese, or a chocolate poptart. For lunch, these delicious things called Bosco sticks, which are breadsticks with cheese in the middle :X. I eat one or two of those, depending on what I had for breakfast. With nacho cheese. Damn. Dinner is hard for me, since it's my least favorite meal. I can never think of anythign good to have.
What type of snacks do you eat? Whatever is around! Usually another English muffin in the afternoon, just to hold me over until after the gym when I eat dinner. Healthy snacks are difficult for me to find.
In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? For a while now I will go to the gym for about two hours. I do between 30-55 minutes of cardio (elliptical, because it burns tons of calories; the treadmill for about 10 minutes so I can slowly increase my running ability). After cardio, or before, I stretch, do abs, and strength train both legs and arms.
Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? The local Planet Fitness. I find that I really enjoy going to the gym, where I'm forced to actually work out (as opposed to at home, where there are so many distractions).
What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise? I love the elliptical because it burns so many calories, dancing, and occasionally sprinting.
What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? Hm, I guess just the fact I'm not getting any younger! The longer I put off losing weight, the more I miss out on.
Do you have rewards for certain goals? I'll also post those in a later post.

Alright, so there's a little introduction to me and this thread. I'll post some more a little later!

-D

Good to see you started a diary :) have you considered setting time aside in you daily routine for the gym ? have you considered doing other forms of exercise at home ? I know there are distractions but it still worth the effort if you can't make it into the gym.

Thanks for stopping by Trusylvr! You know, I try to set aside time and plan my schedule acordingly, but I NEVER follow through. Mostly, laziness gets the best of me and I make up too many excuse (it's late, too much work, etc). I don't have anything to work out with at home besides some fitness DVDs, but just thinking about doing those makes me cringe. I'll just have to stop makign excuses and get my butt to the gym!

Whew, I didn't realize how long that first post was and how it was probably irratating to read. Oh well. So right now I'm having a big debate in my head whether or not to go to my school's basketball game or go to the gym, hmm. I know what I SHOULD do, but right now, what I WANT to do is overpowering. It's things like this that always mess up my gym efforts. I can never make up my mind.

Alright, so while I'm deciding, I'll post what I've eaten today:

Breakfast: 100 cal english muffin w/ peanut buter - 290

Lunch: 2 Bosco sticks w/ nahco cheese - about 500 :X

Snack: Hi-C juice, 2 mini kit kat bars - 240

Dinner: small ham & swiss cheeses sub -about 400

Ok, so I'm giving in and going to the game ): I know, I know, BAD ME! But I just can't pass up the opportunity to socialize! This will surely come back to bite me in the butt, especially because I have quite a bit of homework ..

Is life throwing MUD IN YOUR EYE?!

When you’re riding, only the race in which you’re riding is important.

(Willy Shoemaker)

Let us be a Chillen in some interpretation:

Thundering hoofs inches away, mud flying in your eyes, riding crops whistling past your ear so-to-speak...

With distractions like these, how can anyone be expected to keep her eyes on the finish line?

But the fact is, when things are the craziest is exactly when you need to focus the most.

Successful persons........perfect the art of "correct" tunnel vision, and still march on with living fulfilling life.

They see their goal and are able to shut everything else out--within reason.

They know that watching the scoreboard or thinking about their next game will only hurt their performance. How many times have you heard this sort of comment? Its true....and can be modified in to many different beneficial view points.

When your world is in chaos, when life is flinging mud in your eye, step back and make sure you have the tools necessary and you maintain your focus.

You’ve chosen which race you want to run------NOW GO DO IT!

No other race can count – so don’t get caught watching another one. There are no grandstands, there are no cameras, there are no frenzied throngs betting on your success or failure.

There’s only you, the finish line, and a clear, direct path to get there.

=========================================================
Life is like a "cactus" but you don't have to sit on it.

(Unknown)

Let's Chill with some interpretation:

You forgot to set your alarm, your keys have once again dissolved into the fourth dimension, your car won’t start, there’s a huge traffic jam on the way home, the dog left you a present on the carpet while you were out, and then you just learn you lost your job........

Sometimes it just seems the worst is hot on your trail to bust your ass, and only bad can happen.

Unfortunately, there is ROOM FOR ONLY ONE ASS-HOLE-----YOU, Deanna......Be the absolute PERFECT AND EDUCATED ASS-HOLE!

IT WORKS! :)

Yes, it’s true-bad things will happen once and a while; and it can seem as though those misfortunes are all attacking at once.

When this situation does come along, you just have to stop what you’re doing and get that racing, negative out of your system, and overcome it, and be the stronger positive by....... being a damn good butt-hole about things!!...........>THIS ROCKS! :)

Take ATTITUDE and Mrs. BUTT-HOLE with you, and take the time to tell yourself that whatever is going wrong at that moment, can be fixed, with these two as your companions.

And in no time at all, things are going to change. It’s not until you convince yourself that things are going to turn around, that things actually WILL start looking up.

Feel the absolute THUNDER of being an ASS-hole today!

This one doesnt stink! :)

Focus. See nothing else. Hear nothing else.

It’s only you and what you need to achieve.

Someone screaming that you’re no good or can't do something?

Their voice is no more significant than the distant roar of traffic is to a sailor.

Make YOUR voice the one that counts.............

ROCK ON!

=========================================================

You have have the thundering heart within you...........

Now..........

GET IT..................

You dig.........? ;)

And, one more thing......Do not let anybody......tell you the mind doesnt INFLUENCE the body, here is absolute SIMPLE proof:

Have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach before a big presentation, speech, or other event in your life?

If you have, then you know that the stomach listens to the brain.

What manifests itself within the brain will eventually materialize on the inside AND outside.

(Chillen)

Best regards to you, Deanna

Thank Chillen! That was very insipiring :)

On another note, I enjoyed the game. Not so much the nagging feeling that I should have been at the gym.

Hi Deanna
If you are watching your portions and choosing healthy foods, plus actually using your elliptical (so many don't!), you WILL lose the weight!! It is simply a matter of being committed and doing the work.

Best wishes as you pursue your fitness goals,
ABBA

Thanks for stopping by ABBA! I actually haven't been very good with watching what I eat OR working out but it's the holidays, so that's my excuse.

So, for this whole week I haven't been eating so good. There's just too many tempting foods around because of the holidays, it's so hard to resist! And I've been much too busy to get the the gym, so I haven't been there for the past two weeks :O I feel truly awful that I haven't been, but it's so hard because I'm on break and my schedule changes everyday! Hopefully soon I can make some to to at least go for an hour, I kind of miss it there ):

Today I bought a scale that is supposed to tell you your body fat and weight, which sounds nice. BUT I weighed myself 3 times in a row and the number changed each time, so that made me a little suspicious AND instead of showing your weight in lbs it shows you in STONES! I do not want to have translate that into a number I can understand each time I weigh myself, so hopefully there's a way to change that. Otherwise, I'll probably have to return it :/

My eating has been pretty bad all week, so I'm not going to bother with posting everything I ate. Let's just say I've easily hit the 2000 mark these past few days. Last night I read something about the book Winning By Losing, by Jillian Michaels and I read that the person had good success with it. I searched around the internet looking to see if anyone had lost weight and inches following her plan, and quite a bit of people had. Luckily, I already own the book and have read it a tim or two, but I think I'm going to try her 12 weeks plan and see what happens. Actually, I might try it for a month and see what results I'm getting, and go from there. Has anyone read this book? Have you had any success with her plan?

-D

Argg I'm having such a craving for something sweet! Only too bad for me, the sweetest thing available to me are Apple Jacks. It's pathetic, I'm so restless trying to keep myself away from the pantry and anything that will put me way over my alloted calories for today. Sure, maybe I could have a little, teeny serving, but trust me, I wouldn't be able to stop there, and that tiny portion would turn into 3 cups. I wish I had the willpower to stop myself. So I guess it's probably best I don't tempt myself at all. Gr. Does anyone have tips on trying to curb cravings? That aren't "allow yourself only a small portion of the food you're craving"? Cause that won't work for me.

I went to the mall today, and found a lot of cute tops that fit great and are so cute! Express and Gap have amazing sales going on right now, I could have spent hundreds there today. Sadly, I could not find a good pair of jeans that fit ): I only tried on pairs from American Eagle because I can usually find a few that fit, but no such luck today. Every pair squeezed my stomach so tight and spilled over (YUCK) or they were too tight in the thigh/butt I couldn't pull them up comfortably! Which really sucks cause I'm down to one pair of jeans. Well, I'll be going back next week and maybe I'll have better luck then. I'll have to try Abercrombie because they have some fits that fit me quite well, albeit too long on most.

Breakfast: about 3/4 c. Better'n Eggs, piece of cheese, 2 slices wheat toast w/ whipped butter
Lunch: very large (but thin!) slice of cheese pizza, bottle of lemonade
Dinner: 3/4 chicken quesadilla w/ sour cream

Lunch and dinner were pretty high in fat, but I don't think I went crazy with calories in total. Maybe I'll get around to figuring the actual amount I've consumed today. No gym today, figures, but I did walk around the mall for 3 hours so .. at least I wasn't sitting on my butt all day.

I'm off to go read or busy myself with something while trying to resist those Apple Jacks calling my from the kitchen.

-D

Going out to eat to celebrate my mother's birthday.

And yes, I do plan for dessert.

PLAN meaning I've adjusted my calories for the day to fit in a nice tasty treat :)

PS. those cravings last night? They totally killed me. I had a Betty Crocker Warm Delight and some cookie dough.

I should of just had those damn Apple Jacks.

-D

when the cravings hit try to go and do something physical, it will help take your mind of the craving. :)

Hey Trusylver, thanks for the tip! I will definitely try that one during the day because doing something physical late at night (when the cravings run rampant) would keep me up later. Thanks for the suggestion :)

So I didn't end up having dessert tonight, much to my dismay. I had a little more than half a cheeseburger and some french fires. Oh, and a couple slices (more like chunks) of this delcious wheat bread the restaurnat gives out as appetizers. We did have a large, cake-sized woopie pie for my mom's birthday, but I'm allergic to it (tree nuts). So I guess I'll just have to go dessert-less tonight. I guess I can live with that, I'm not intensely craving anything. Usually, once I get my mind on something I want to eat, I'm anxious to get my hands on it and it bothers me to no end until I can eat it. Shameful.

No gym tonight, but I knew that wasn't gonna happen. Maybe tomorrow night? Hopefully!

Breakfast: 1 c. Apple Jacks w/ skim milk
Snack: water, few Cheez Its
Lunch: 1 c. mac & cheese (one cup was bigger than I thought, yay!), water
Dinner: 4 "chunks" of wheat bread w/ butter, about half a cheese burger, few french fries, water

-D

Also! That new scale I bought the other day? I figured out how to change it from stones to lbs! Turns out there is a little switch on the bottom. I figure now is a good time to post my measurements

12/28/08:

Height: 5'3"
Weight: 175.6

Neck: 13.25
Chest: 39
Waist (above belly button): 37
Stomach (below belly button): 42.25
Hips: 41.5
Right Arm: 14
Left Arm: 13.25
Right Forearm: 9.5
Left Forearm: 9
Right Thigh: 25
Left Thigh: 24.5
Right Calf: 16.5
Left Calf: 16

So there they are, I'm glad to have finally recorded them someplace I won't lose them! Next Sunday I'll be posting up some new (hopefully smaller!) measurements.

I mentioned in my first post that I would post my reasons to lose weight and my rewards for reaching goals. Now, after putting it off for a while, I've decided now is a good time to finally post 'em.

REASONS FOR LOSING WEIGHT(yes, some are shallow):
In no particular order-
1. I don't want to be the "fat friend". Most of my friends are so pretty and thin, I always feel inadequete compared to them. They always get attention from guys, and look great in everything, and blah blah blah.
2. I don't want t have to worry about how clothes fit or if I'll even find anythign that looks good on me. I want to be able to see something I like and not have to worry about it showing off my muffin top.
3. I want to be healthy. Heart disease runs in my family, as does high blood pressure. I don't want to have to worry running a high risk for that when I'm older.
4. I want to be more athletic. I've done lacrosse, and I'm currently doing track, but I during lacrosse I wimped out at practices and kept the book more than I played in the games. In track, I do shotput and I'm not even good at that. My goal is to be fit enough to successfully compete in the long jump during spring track.
5. I want a boyfriend. That sounds so cliche and stupid, but it's true. Honestly, even if some guy came along that I was interested in and LIKED me for me, and didn't mind that I wasn't a size 4, I still wouldn't be able to accept that. I need to love my body before I can let someone else.
6. I want to clear up my acne. Thankfully I don't have severe acne, but it's enough to bother me.
7. I want to feel beautiful. I can't help but feel that I'll never be "competely" beautiful until I've lost weight.
8. Finally, I want to feel comfortable with myself. I hate thinking that my overall self is lessened by my weight and that I'm not good enough or worthy of many things.

REWARDS FOR GOALS!

170- Manicure or pedicure
160- New outfit
150- Highlights
145- hm, any suggestions?
135- NEW WARDROBE!

-D

I think that's so great that you made a list of reasons as to why you want to lose weight. It'll definitely keep you motivated when you don't feel like working out. :)

ALSO! I totally understand your jeans problem! All my friends wonder why I hardly ever wear jeans even though they're "so comfortable." Have you ever tried buying jeans from Banana Republic? I'm only 5'3" and Banana has a PETITE SECTION! Their jeans fit perfectly and never need hemming. Definitely check them out. :)

OH PS maybe for 145 you can treat yourself to a facial or something similar.

Hey oLUX! Thanks for stopping by :) Yes, I'm hoping it serves has a motivator when I'm too lazy to get to the gym or trying to resist something sweet! I actually have tired on jeans from Banana Republic! I don't remember if I tried on petites though .. I think I tried on some 12's but the waist was a little too snug. I probably should get my fixation off the number on the tag and focus on fit! Since sizes vary depending on stores.

Thanks for bringing up that suggestion, I'll check them out again! A facial sounds like a good idea, too! I've never had one :p And congrats on 15 pounds lost! :D

-D

I DID IT! I FINALLY went to the gym after a 2 week hiatus! I've got to admit, I didn't do much, I went with a friend so I couldn't really get in the "zone". I stretched, did a few screamers, little bit of arms and leg, and 20 minutes on the elliptical. I want to say I burned about 350 calories? Almost a third of what I usually burn, but hey, at least I went right?

Here's what I ate yesterday:

Breakfast- 2 slices sourdough bread w/ 1 piece cheese & butter
Lunch- Ham and cheese sandwhich, Cooler Ranch Doritos, Hi-C (I was babysitting :p)
Snack: about 1/2 c. chocolate chip ice cream, 1 c. Rice Krispies w/ skim milk + sugar
Dinner: half a chicken quesadilla (pretty large), 2 tbls spinach + cheese dip w/ tortilla chips
Dessert: strawberry cheesecake "shooter" from Applebees (delicious, and the perfect little size)

I want to say my calories were around 1900-2000 yesterday. Ugh, no matter what I can NEVER seem to eat less ): I realized when I'm out to eat, I just throw my eating out the window and I forget about it foe the time being. But once it's over, I think, What did I just do?!. Going out to dinner is something I love to do, but I just need to focus on some self-control!

No gym tonight, I have a pre-New Year's Eve party to go to (no drinking, but there will probably be a lot of snacks). I really can't afford to eat much else today; I've already had about 900 calories during one meal today. It was around 1130, so I'm counting is as breakfast AND lunch.

OMG OK, STORY OF MY LIFE. You're doing so well and then you go out with some friends and they're all eating.. what are you going to do? Definitely not chrew on lettuce. AHH! It's ok, I think you can just order something SEMI-HEALTHY and maybe just not eat all of it. What I realized is that American sized portions are SOOOO HUGEEE. Whenever I go abroad, the portion sizes in other countries are less than half of our sizes so -- maybe just eat less so you can still enjoy your time out with friends. :)

Hope your party was fun! Was it hard to not drink/snack? I'm going into the city for New Years tonight with friends but I think I might have to duct tape my mouth shut so I don't start drinking.

Have a great new year!

Usually when I go I only eat half of whatever I get, EXCEPT the flatbread pizza at Uno's .. but I haven't been tehre in a while thankfully! Tonight I think I might be going out to dinner AGAIN, making this the third night this week. Oh well, I can try the tips for eating out :)

Hope your party was fun! Was it hard to not drink/snack? I'm going into the city for New Years tonight with friends but I think I might have to duct tape my mouth shut so I don't start drinking.

It was! I actually ate 2 or 3 little squares of cheese and 2 or 3 little crackers, as well as 2 cheese curls haha. Oh, and two chips with some dip. Pretty good I think! It wasn't TOO hard, there wasn't really anything too delicious and plus, I didn't want to look like the big girl hovering around the food table haha.
Going to a New Year's Party tonight, not sure about drinking but if I do, I won't have too much .. maybe. Have fun and good luck with the drinking! (or lackof :p)

So I'm a little sad to see '08 go. It's been such a interesting year; so many things, good and bad, have happened, and I'm not sure I'm ready to let it go. I can't quite say why, but I know it will be greatly missed. It was a such an important year for me, but I always love a fresh start. I think I'll make a New Year's Resolution list, though I'm worried that's too cliche and I won't complete any of it haha.

Have a good New Year's Eve everyone! :cheers2:

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

I had a good NYE, not such much eating wise though. I wasn't really planning on drinking, but I ended up doing a shot and having a few (LIGHT!) beers. I want to say my total calories for yesterday were around 2000. I ate many different things but I just don't feel like posting it up; too many little things to type. Anyhow, I hope everyone had a good time and did better than me with their eating/drinking!

TODAY'S FOOD:

Brunch- 2 fried eggs, blueberry muffin, 3 very small pieces of bacon, 2 juice containers, one slice of toast w/ butter
Snack: 3/4 cup of cottage cheese, 6 slices of peaches
Dinner: less than 2/3 flatbread tomato & cheese pizza (Uno's), side caesar salad, half a brownie w/ scoop of ice cream

I didn't exactly calculate everything, but I want to say it was around 2000 calories again today.

I FINALLY read through my Winning By Losing book and developed the plan to fit my schedule and what not. Now I just need to look into the eating plan and I'll be set! I'm so excited to start this new weight loss plan because I've been going at my weight loss attempts blind folded. It's nice to have a set plan!

How was everyones' New Year's Eve? Any resolutions?

-D

It's one of those day today! Going out to eat to celebrate my brother's birthday, which means restaurant food and cake! To add on, tonight I'm going to another party to celebrate my friend's brother's birthday. So much tempting food! I hope I can stay strong and say NO to the bad things.

Because of my busy day today, I'm not sure that I can get in a workout. I have a whole exercise plan to follow, now it's just a matter of DOING IT. Things would be so much easier if there were more hours in the day ..

On another note, I lost .8 pounds this week! It might have actually been .6 pounds .. I can't remember what exactly I weighed last week. I'll have to figure out how to use the 'past weights' function on my scale. Still, I think it was a pretty good loss considering I only worked out for an hour this week and ate an average of 2000 calories a day. I can't wait for next week when my schedule will be back to normal, along with my eating.

Ok, so I HAVE been on the boards lately, just not my own thread! I guess I kind of abandoned it for a few days. Last night my computer's monitor decided to die, so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to start the challenge I joined! Team 2 will kick butt! :D

Last night I stayed pretty close to my daily calories AND went to the gym for about 1.5 hours. So that was about 50 min of weights, 10 min of stretching, and 30 min of cardio! I started the Winning By Losing exercise plan last night (you spilt up training different groups of muscles, so yesterday was chest, shoulders, quads, triceps, and abs; tonight will be back, biceps, glutes, hanstrings and obliques- then it switches back and fort) Man, let me tell you, this morning my arms were SO SORE! Maybe it's because I haven't done a serious gym workout in a while, but I was FEELING IT this morning. Must've had a pretty good workout :)
