Covid-19 ... coronavirus ... thoughts?

6'3" and 244 lbs, according to his most recent physical, is a BMI of 30.5 which is slightly above the obesity BMI threshold (30.0 BMI or >240 lbs). But as most of you are well aware BMI's primary usefulness is in the aggregate - it is often misleading surrogate for body fat in individual cases ( https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/downloads/BMIforPactitioners.pdf )

The average 6'3" tall 74 year old weighing 240 lbs is estimated to have a body fat percentage of 36.8%, suggesting that 36.8% is the body fat obesity threshold for Trump. Given his appearance and how active he is, I find it unlikely that Trump has that high of a body fat percentage (my body fat is 39.5% at 283 lbs and 5'7.5")

cringed a little today when i heard Chris Christie tested positive.
only 58 years old, but his weight plus asthma has put him in the hospital, too

I had a cringe experience today too...

I went out walking locally this morning and I saw a delivery driver pull up to a house on my street.
I walked into the road (traffic was very quiet) as I wanted to be sure of keeping my distance...
I saw him go up the path to the doorstep and a woman answered who was not wearing a mask.
They would not be 2 metres away from each other...
She said "put the shopping on the step - I've got Covid. I've been tested and it was positive"...

I thought - my goodness - she could have worn a mask or covered her face... She knows that she could be passing on the virus.

Some people have no consideration of others...

I've made a note of her door number and will be extra sure to avoid anyone I see coming from that house - even though I already try to avoid just about everyone I don't know...

there are Asian countries that are doing great, BUT nearly every medical voice is saying it's because they have >95% compliance with social interactions. good luck getting even a fraction of Trump's 35% to comply. talk about shooting ourselves in the foot. this is never going to end.

even worse... Trump, who is getting literally $1000 daily treatments ( a 5-day Remdesivir (GS-5734™) treatment costs $3000, the other antibody cocktail Trump is being injected with isn't even authorized yet) might get out of the hospital and announce that COVID-19 was nothing big and he got over it in a few days.... all lies of course.

examples set by national leadership seem to get more bizarre every day.
Kellyanne Conway and at least seven others tested positive so far after this super spreader event.

hard to believe this actually did happen this evening, but it's even worse ... when Trump returned to the WH, under heavy meds including steroids, he took off his mask and spent time on the WH balcony taking pictures of him saluting (something) and putting all those around him in danger... again ... he had makeup on.... i doubt if he does his own. i can't believe i'm saying this, but for the sake of lives it will save, i really do hope he relapses and they have to bring him back to Walter Reed on a gurney.

dexamethasone can cause mania and delirium add this onto his existing personality then the irrational behaviour could become a whole lot worse.

The good news is that the virus apparently makes you feel 20 years younger! As good as losing weight... We have learned a lot from this man.

i thought this was the best place to post my weight as the coronavirus has been recently playing a bigger part of my life than ever before...

10.12.20..169.0.jpg

all i hear today is "go out and enjoy yourself as long as the seniors can stay safely home and are protected."

this is bullshit... last year at this time i was enjoying my weight being at a normal level for the first time in a decade. every day i looked forward to going out for a walk... meeting and smiling at people all day... chatting with strangers... just sitting at a bar and having a few while i tackled the daily crossword puzzle.

this week i have left my house twice. both to go to the market across the street from me. i chat with the vegetable guy at the store for a few minutes. i chat with the checkout girls a few minutes. socially sometimes i grab a coffee, sit on a lone picnic table outside the store and watch a few people who also get their morning shopping done early in the day. i haven't been on a walk more than a mile in over a week and i have no ambition to.

when i look at the future i do not see an end, ... in fact, after Trump loses and he acts even crazier between November 3rd and January 21st things will only get worse. then what's a new admin going to do...? there is nothing out there that makes me believe this same life isn't going to drag on for at least another year.

i feel like Schrodinger's cat.

Things are pretty miserable here in England too.

We've had the medical experts on the TV this morning saying that things are getting a lot worse and big changes need to be made.
Boris is going to announce in parliament at 3:30pm what the new situation is.
He is going to speak to the nation on TV at 6pm and explain to us - as if we were not going to monitor what was said at 3:30pm.

People say the new rules will start on Wednesday.

Everyone feels sick about the whole thing. Totally on edge waiting to know our fate.

We are bracing ourselves for the gym to shut and dance lessons to stop and they are the only thing that makes life feel vaguely normal. We are already not allowed to meet up with anyone from outside our household and not allowed to have visitors in our homes. Workmen are allowed in but not our friends - no matter how socially distant.

We are going to zumba tonight - it is well spaced (2.5 metres between each person and the next in every direction) and safe and a few friends will be there... Heaven knows when we will be able to do this next...

Just having a read in here don't know how I missed this thread. Omega we are not doing great here either but we are allowed a bit more freedom than you I think. I used to love Zumba and other classes years ago , great fun. Enjoy especially if then decide to halt them.
My opinion in Ireland is that people are fed up and carrying on with some socialising at home . We are all bs k in work and TRY to keep our distance from others .

Do you guys really think Trump will lose to Biden ? I hope so but it gets lots of coverage in Ireland and it's hard to say

Do you guys really think Trump will lose to Biden ? I hope so but it gets lots of coverage in Ireland and it's hard to say

there seems to be two schools of thought about this that i can fathom... probably the largest group are those who hope Biden wins, but are suspicious that something will still happen in the next few weeks, and of course 4 years ago it seemed like Clinton was surely going to win until a literal perfect storm of occurrences changed that very close to election day.

i am in that group with maybe 10%.... i hate to say my biggest fear, but suffice it to say it has to do with a maniac Trump supporter. i would like to ask what might happen if Biden dies before 21 January, but i'd rather not even think about it. most of the rest of me is in the camp of, ... in 2016 people didn't like Clinton that much (without much reason) and most of those who don't always vote one party or the other thought something different was needed and unfortunately not many people saw Trump for what he really is/was. this year that group can see what they got and i doubt if he will get that vote again. in addition, some of the dedicated Trumpites are more than "disappointed" (... i could think of a dozen other words, but i'll be nice) with his non-performance. for the last 4 years Trump has literally never stopped campaigning.... it appears that is the limit of his talent.

the sad part is that there is still about 30% of the country that .... maybe isn't thrilled with Trump, but who hate the democrats. these include anti-abortion/ anti-choice religious groups and assault weapon fanatics... i am a firearm owner, and while there are many reasonable people in this hobby, there are many who are not. my view is that there are too many people who view firearms as weapons. i just enjoy punching holes in paper 100 yards away or knocking over metal animal and horse rustler silhouettes. frankly at the moment i'm more afraid of my new kitchen knives.

the most frustrating thing is being from a state where my vote is literally not going to make a difference.... somewhat. the outcome of this election is going to be based on how two or three states vote. add to that a senate where the majority party only represents about 40% of the population. nothing about our system of government seems to make a lot of sense anymore. the constitution was written in the 18th century. regardless of how "smart" those guys were, i doubt if anyone then could have seen this far into the future. things that don't change to keep up with the times are doomed to die out.

sorry for rambling... i usually watch the news, but this week i am turning it off.
i know the judicial hearings are just going to piss me off even more.
i feel like going out for a long walk ... yeah, sure, like that might happen.

The best data probably comes from fivethirtyeight, and they put Trump's chances at around 14% - about half of his chances in 2016: 2020 Election Forecast https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-election-forecast/

The Democrats' problem these last two cycles is that their candidates just aren't popular: Clinton failed to win a majority of the popular vote (she won 48% - a plurality - but a majority of American voters voted against her). Biden is currently polling just over 50% but not high enough to beat the polling margin of error (keep in mind that polls skew democratic anyway - conservatives are far less likely to answer and spend 5 minutes talking to a stranger on the phone). And if you're polling that low in America, you really need to appeal to a cross section of society in order to win the electoral college.

So the situation is better for the Democrats, but they really need to appeal to voters in MN, WI, IA, PA, & OH. Unfortunately, much of the Democratic party platform doesn't resonate with the traditional values among the rust belt voters so their main appeal has always been "the other guy is worse."

That just doesn't work when both guys are terrible, and no one thinks Biden is a great candidate.

For my part, I've voted for the Libertarian candidate since 2012. I thought I was voting for a civil libertarian anti-war Democrat in Obama in 2008, but in many ways this constitutional law professor was worse than Bush on civil rights (e.g. he expanded wars, state surveillance, and remains the only US president to assassinate a US citizen without any court review). If my arm was twisted to voting for "the lesser of two evils" in 2020, I would actually vote for Trump. If I'm going to vote for an authoritarian bent on taking more and more civil rights, I'm going to vote for the candidate that will take the fewest rights from me personally... Biden/Harris want to erode my 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th, & 14th amendment rights - just to name a few.

..., ... in fact, after Trump loses ....

ok.... my fault for this phrase, but NOT taken out of context it was directed at how much things are not normal in my life and i'm just sick of it. keeping this in mind is seriously my only lifeline to sanity. i started this string to get views of the virus, ... unfortunately in many ways on a national level, a medical issue has become a political issue.

a short aside about posting pictures.... i'm not sure if this is valid for everyone, but in this forum a normal size anywhere else looks bigger here. if you cut down the size to ~600 dpi in the largest dimension, they are a lot less prominent and easier on the eyes.

i hope this can return immediately to comments on the virus/ pandemic and what effect it is having on your life or diet.
cheers, ...if you can manage it.

Thank goodness that Newcastle is in tier 2 and the gyms are still open. Apparently the government is in talks with the council leaders... Who knows what will happen next - but at least I am booked in a zumba class next Monday (as are my friends) and we are currently wait listed on Friday's class. Classes get fully booked very quickly here... Normally in less than 15 seconds from when bookings open...

They didn't allow outdoor zumba until they allowed it indoors in July on the spring / early summer lockdown... Not really the weather here to do anything like that anyway until next year...

The music is brilliant and it is excellent exercise. The best kind of exercise is something that you want to do.
