Combining weight lifting with other sports / martial arts

Because for weightlifting the resting periods are so important, I wonder how you combine it with other sports that require intense training. Should you for example skip doing push ups when everyone else does em, because you trained your chest a few days earlier and it still needs the rest ?
Or won't doing some pushups, situps and other exercises interfere with the resting/rebuilding period of these muscles ?
 
Well, if you are training seriously for a sport, then you need to go into a maintenance phase for weight lifting ... which is only going once or twice a week and in days that don't interfere with your sport specific training ... although, you shouldn't have any problems doing situps on any day, as they recover very quickly.
