Colon Cleansing

Some time ago I read an article which had examined `mucosal plaque' coming out of people doing cleansings, and found that it was largely comprised of the gelatine used in the laxative capsules which are taken in quantity.
I can't find it now, but this was the basis of a big international lawsuit filed against a company marketing in the US. The "teas and herbal capsules, taken in combination with fasting" had a VERY difficult to follow regimen that was medically unhealthy in the short term AND long term, and it turned out the waste you received after a week or two of fasting was mostly composed of the ingredients from the teas and herbal capsules.

*sigh* I'm sure there are some "detoxfying agents" that are good for your body, I just wish it was easier to cut through all the hype and marketing gimmicks to find them. I'll stick with water, thanks.

Are there real benefits....hmmm

Well, thought I should comment on this one. I've heard people say that cleanses are great, and others say that they really do nothing for you.

I guess the purpose is that an internal cleanse is supposed to do exactly what we do for our external body on a regular basis. We cleanse ourselves on a regular basis, and rid ourselves of bacteria and germs that we pick up every day. However, our body doesn't automatically do this for the internal parts.

As for the benefits, some people say that they feel energized after doing one of these, and other people say they have become ill from their body reacting negatively to the cleanse.

I think if you are going to try one of these cleanses, start with something simple - one that is for a shorter length of time. Perhaps one of the ones that are 12 days or less.

A good thing to note too, is that there are some that restrict you from alcohol and some that don't......so if you're a wine addict like myself, I'd try to find one that doesn't:)

I lost 15 pounds in two weeks by taking an all-natural colon cleanse product. My wife always told me I was full of $h#t but I guess now she has verifyable evidence. :D

Cleansing Program--Yes or No

I got my measurements and weight taken at the gym the other day and was pleased to see I have lost another 5 inches this month and 2 1/2 pounds!! My trainer was talking to me and has suggested that I do a 7 day cleansing.. .she has tried to talk me in to this before--What are the benefits to this?? My boyfriend was checking in the stores, and saw a few different kinds of cleaning kits--all natural ones--different varieties of course...all had different eating guidelines to go with them?? The one at my gym is a powder you mix with ice cold water in the morning, and then she said you go about your normal healthy eating routine for the day... Anyone have any recommendations as to a good one to use?? Is this something that is really good to do or is she just trying to get me to buy their stuff??? She also suggested I take a metabolism booster...any thoughts from anyone??? Good things to do, or not???

At the health food store I work at, a lot of the staff & customers do the MASTER CLEANSE by Stanley Bourroughs ( I think that is his name) at least once a year. I don't do it for various reasons. One being that I was anorexic in high school & it was feeling a little to familar & lead me down a bad road that I didn't want to start back up.

Anyway, its a cleanse where you drink a concoction of maple syrup, lemon juice, cayanne pepper & water all day (there are reasons behind each ingredient & the quanities) & every morning you do a salt water cleanse to get out the toxins in the body (this part isn't fun but it is a CLEANSE right so you have to get stuff out some how, stay near the bathroom!). Its not fun but they swear by it.

Be leary of anyone trying to sell anything. Look into all programs to see if they are actually right for you & if you do start something & it doesn't feel right, then stop.

Good luck!

No, you do not need to "cleanse." Your body isn't a shower drain collecting hair, or in this case, toxins -- the intestines have a purpose, which is to do the cleansing for you.

A "flush" would clean your body out of its excess water, at the most, and you can do that easily by just drinking enough water ever day, so that you don't retain any.

Your kidneys are there to "cleanse" your body. I often wonder what are all these "toxins" some "health gurus" are talking about. Are they the natural "toxins" your intestines need to break down your food? Are they bits of plastic and stuff that you've eaten? On top of that, a lot of these "cleansing" programs seem to concentrate on the colon, whose main purpose is to extract water from your waste matter. By the time food reaches your colon, your small intestine has already done the work of extraction, toxins and all.

If people are worried about toxins, it may be a lot better to start with the food they ingest in the first place. There was a great article in last week's NY Times Magazine about nutrition, and a good piece of advice there was, "Eat only the things your grandmother would recognize as food." In other words, the more chemicals listed on the back of the package, the more you should stay away from it.

If you're that worried about toxins, go organic. Buy free range meat, eat organic vegetables, etc. But I wouldn't waste money trying to do something your kidneys can do much better than you can.

So much of this talk has gone around from movie stars to books, to people I know. A friend of mine did the Master Cleanse with her boyfriend and told me how great it was. It happened to be one day over at my Dad's so my Dad was all into it (along with mom who watches Dr Phil and he also talks about the toxins in our body!) We ended buying the book, some of the things he says are a little out of the ordinary but I gave it a try and only made it for 5 days. Both my parents made it the full 10. Not sure if it did a whole lot since I didn't make it the whole period but both my parents and friends sware by it.
Only thing I can say is that is not to loose weight although some do it for that .. its just suppose to help your system. Not sure about all of you but since I've been dieting I'm not all that regular if ya know what I mean, so that was why I thought I'd give it a try.. Good Luck tho :)

I'm getting a colonic (colon hydrotherapy) for the first time this coming thursday.. seems like there's atleast a few people curious about it on here soooo i'll let you all know how it goes!

sooo i ended up getting the colonic done on friday not thursday.. the lady i went to see talked to me for about an hour before it just filling me up with information about what to expect and so much more.. then i got hooked up to the machine.. not the most enjoyable thing in the world but it wasn't bad... so i wont get into all the details i thought it was awesome but i'm sure many of you might think otherwise.. but more impotantly...

regretfully .. i didn't weigh myself right before and right after the procedure

but i lost 3 pounds overnight which is less then i hoped for but then again my pants deff fit loser and my stomach went down much more then 3 pounds worth.. and i've lost 2 more pounds since saturday morning

i'd say it was more then worth it

cleanse

Currently I don't do any of those things...so I guess my body has to deal with toxins etc. a different way.

As for the fasting I'd have to say....if I wanted to do it, I would do it supervised in a class or so. An uncle of mine was leading a class like that a few years ago and all the people attending were very pleased with the class and the result. It was not a weight loss programm, just a course for cleaning out your system.

please try turkey rubarb from one of your local health food stores

A Cleanse...

Since the cleanse fad is so popular among many users, I am thinking about embarking on a cleanse. (and also since i have apparently lost a lot of my appetite lately)

What is the safest, and easiest [financially] cleanse for me to try? I don't want to go more then 10 days. Also, any other comments and/or advice you can throw in would be quite helpful.

Thanks again :)

adam

I hear they are not really safe.
You need healthy flora and fauna in your digestive system, and they wipe everything out.

Best way to cleanse: Lots of water, lots of natural fiber in your diet (whole grains, beans, raisins, prunes).

Detox

not too sure if I have placed this in the right forum but ah well!
I really don't see what 'detoxing' is supposed to achieve
correct me if I am wrong but the idea is to sort of 'flush out' toxins from the body
well... considering that our human bodies have evolved with liver and kidneys to do this for us.. why on earth do people detox?!
it is completely beyond me
if anyone would like to add something to this or give me some insight on the pros of detoxing, please do!

there's an infomercial on in the wee hours of the morning where the huckster goes on and on about the benefits of cleansing and how you should use his product...he goes on to say that we carry around pounds and pounds of waste in our intestines and it blocks our intestines - and you can tell this by (and i'm trying not to be gross here) by the size and width of your bowel movements.. he also says (least i think it's the same infomercial) that elvis died with like 30 lbs of excess waste in his intestines.

Google on Mucoid Plaque - you'll find lots of really disgusting images that back up the claim.

Do I beleive it? in some cases it's probably true but for the person who does get their RDA of fiber and drinks plenty of water, I think their body is pretty much self cleansing...

' An article from the Division of Complementary Medicine of the University of Exeter described mucoid plaque and other claims of "colonic autointoxication" as "a triumph of ignorance over science" '
lol
ahmen to that
