Chinups vs. pullups

No, not lol...i was being serious.

Try it yourself one day. Do the finger wrap, and try the pull up. Then the next day, try it without the finger wrap and see how much better you do.

I saw it in the Navy SEALs fitness test. I was doing the pull up, and someone came to me and told me to not wrap the finger around. I noticed a huge increase in pull up feel and amount.

no difference, maybe harder. read georgen's post.

Do wide pullups actually work the lats better, or does it just feel like that due to the crappy mechanic situation you get put in?

Yes, wide grip does work the lats more, but going too wide will affect your range of motion (e.g as wide as possible) so don't do that.

Will narrow work the lats more by stretching the lats better in the bottom position and by providing better ROM?

Narrow grip will work biceps more.

I really can't be arsed explaining (because it would take forever and you won't understand it) but it's all to do with angles, perpendicular distance and the line of force.

I want to explain to you why you're an asshole, but you wouldn't understand. What gives you the right to speak to me like that? If you're gonna come in here and make an argument, you better make an argument, not just say that something is so. So explain, why do wide work the lats better. and please don't just go physics, way too many people think that training is all about what they learn in physics in college, think some biomechanics, why will the lats be recruited more when going wide?

I was going to answer, but I'm afraid of certain intellectuals on here bashing my theories.

Why does narrow, under-hand grip work the biceps more? Underhand grip-your forearm is supinated, which is a position that elicits bicep muscle recruitment (that's why most people do bicep curls with forearms supinated, or start with a neutral position and supinate at the end of motion).

Wide, overhand-grip works the lats more, because you are reducing the bicep muscle recruitment because of the pronated grip. Also, because of where the lat muscle inserts on the humerous, makes shoulder ADDuction its primary movement.

I've said my peace, debate over.

so if you hold narrow, it would be more like shoulder extension (hope I'm right now.. humerus from overhead and down going in front of the body would be shoulder flexion, right? and humerus from overhead going down on the side would be adduction?)
If I'm right, which of the back muscles do more with shoulder extension?

you are correct with shoulder extension and everything else. Shoulder extension is the Lat muscle's secondary movement, followed by internal rotation.

Major back muscles for shoulder extenstion: Lats, teres major, even rear delts have shown recruitment for this exercise.

Well you wouldn't understand, so why would i bother. It's not something you can just learn in 5 minutes, it's complicated stuff that you have to study to learn and i'd require pictures to show you what i'm talking about (hence i can't be bothered). I didn't mean it to be offensive in any way. I rarely visit this part of the forum anymore, but from the few posts that i occasionally read, not many other people back up what they're saying and the people that do are sometimes wrong any way.

Stroutman - we have a "faces behind the usernames" thread in the members lounge where you can post that hideous picture of yourself. It isn't necessary to caption your pics though ;).

Ouch...

Good comeback. With your immense brilliance that you can't share, I figured you'd come back with something much more gnarly than that.

I've posted pictures before but that would require the use of the search feature of the vbulletin platform and I can't be asked to explain something so complicated to you. It simply wouldn't be worth my time because you'd never understand it.

So I'll just prance my holier-than-thou attitude right out of this thread.

I agree.

I actually did LOL when i read this. I'd say i was laughing with you, but you probably had your serious face on when you typed it.

So I'll just prance my holier-than-thou attitude right out of this thread.

umm, ok.

There...Now we've both posted a lame picture and each had one lame comeback for the other person. I'm calling even stevens, unless if you wanna keep arguing with yaself.

If a thread has died, please don't revive it, especially when the thread involved quite heavy fighting, unless you have something to contribute or a question regarding on of the posts or the topic of the thread.

I have a question!

Whats a pullup?

It's generally not a good idea to crack a joke directly ignoring something a mod just said. Thread closed. If anyone have any questions about pullups just search to find another thread or make a new one if you can't find one. If you have a question about a particular thing said in this thread, please just quote whatever that is in the new thread you make.
